So my friend won this lot on eBay for a pretty decent price... only problem is, it's pretty badly damaged. As an ambitious hobbiest, I think its nothing that can't be fixed up, but the big problem comes with the list. It's pretty bad. Between us, we have a TON of bits, but here's a look at what the guy sent us. Can someone (I've never played IG, so I lose out here pretty badly) help turn the contents of this list in to a playable 1000 point list? Here's what we have to work with...

I know there are some big issues with this (i.e. 2x vindicare assassins?!?) but if I get an idea of what could work out of this, I can start reviving these models so my buddy can have something to be mildly proud of.

It doesn't look like you have any troops at all. You really have 20 plasma guns? I assume those are lasguns...

Anyway a mech army should work ok

Command squad - 5 dudes dropping with plasma guns
troops - 5 dropping guys with plasma/melta, 10 guys with a lascannon, 10 guys with a lascannon
armored fist squad - 10 guys in a chimera with weapons.

You'll have 3 tanks, a scoring transport full of dudes, two drop squads and 20 other guys with lascannons. Maybe give them light infantry and let them infiltrate

that would be a simple, basic list with this lot at 1000 points and should be semi-effective until the new codex comes out.

If you went to higher points I'd add things in something like this order:

Hellhound
More troops with lascannon
Inquisitor lord w/ some kind of proxied retinue (two mystics, the gun servitors)
Vindicare assasin (good in 5th edition)

that would maybe move it up to 1500 points and still be ok, even though you'd be burning a lot of points for a pretty weird inquisitor lord setup.

I believe the troops were supposed to be the stormtroopers, using the grenadiers doctrine. It allows 0-3 units of storm troopers to be taken as troops. I don't know what that guy was thinking, but the stormtroopers are probably the nicest looking units in the army, so I may stick with that.

My mistake, yeah I understand what this is now. Many fewer troops than I thought. No problem, you can run two squads of storm troopers/grenadiers as troops:

2 Leman Russ - 310
10 grenadiers/storm troopers in chimera with 2x plasma gun - 200
10 grenadiers/storm troopers in chimera with 2x melta gun - 200
Min sized command squad, dropping, plasma guns (the veterans)- 80 base, plus whatever you spend on making the officer as modeled

Thats 800 points and a good start to the army, imo. I'd play it. Add in the hellhound and the basilisk, or the demolisher and some points in the command squad and you're good to go. Short on troops maybe (2 choices at 1000 points) but not the end of the world at all.

Adding more points, you can start adding heavy weapons teams to the Command platoon, or add in the inquisitor lord/retinue and the vindicare. It would be tough to squeeze 1500 out of this but doable and it wouldn't be bad for guard in 5e (armor is always nice to have and he has a lot)

You've got three big questions facing you.

1) Do you want to run this as an Imperial Guard army with Inquisitorial allies or as an Inquisitorial army with induced IG?
2) How much (roughly) are you willing to spend to finish this army / how much usable salvage came in the bitz box? (And, as a related matter, are your IG models plastic Cadians?)
3) Do you have plans to expand this army up to a larger sized force? If so, how many points are you eventually aiming for?

As it stands now, you have a lot of really solid stuff: the Hellhound is a great tank, your 4 HS choices basically cover all the options in the current IG codex, and lots of Heavy Weapons are always useful. But you don't really have a usable army. I mean, you could obviously make a legal list, but it will simultaneously piss off comp-conscious opponents AND suck at 5th Ed. missions. (Two minimized troop choices are not going to be able to do anything in objective missions, and you don't really solve the KP problem.)

The only thing I see is that there are 4 heavy support choices in this army, the 3 Leman Russ's and the basilisk. So you need to take one of those out.

But I agree with Dave47, this really looks more like an inquisitor HQ with some IG as helpers.

One thing you could do is scrap the inquitor lord and replace it with a squad of grey knight terminators.

I also recommend picking up either a cadian or catachan starter set.
Cadian set= 20guardsmen 3 HW, 1 Leman Russ.
Catachan set=20guardsman, 3 sentinals, 1 Leman Russ.

Where i'm at I can get a cadian set for $67 and a catachan for $80.

These will boost your troops and give you either some sentinals for fast attack or an extra tank that you can set up the way you want it.
