Subject: HELP! Scenic Basing Ideas for Vampire Counts...

At this moment I am working on a Vampire Count conversion army. However, I wanted to make the bases just as interesting as the models themselves. I believe that a good, scenic base can make for an interesting story - or at least hint at one.
The two ideas I'm mucking about at right now for scenic bases are:
1. Sacking a Hamlet: Put cobblestones and bricks underneath the mini's feet, basing them as zombies lurch through streets, ghouls crawling over headstones, and my lord flying above an old statue of a dead warpriest.
2. Hel Fenn: I was thinking of putting together a swampy bunch of scenic bases where it would look as if the zombies were rising out of the muck, rancid water, et cetera.
Both ideas are fun for me, but frankly I was hoping that you faithful Dakka Dakkians would be able to help me generate some more ideas that I could employ that would work on a multitude of boards - though I know that shouldn't limit how I base them. I've tried searching "the interwebz" for inspiration and have found some really great basing ideas, but nothing that has slapped me with a four-pound trout.
Thank you in advance for any help you give me!
Cheers,
Z

I'd go with the hamlet idea. There's tons of opportunity here with bits of buildings, tormented villagers and so on. All depends on how good your modelling skills are really. How about having your bases depicting different parts of the hamlet? What I mean is having all of the bases from one unit represent, say, the graveyard, and another unit represent the main street. That way, all of your units will look unified, but as if each unit is in a different part of the hamlet.

Forgot to add: Not only will this mean your army looks good, but you can have fun thinking about lots of different but related modelling opportunities.

You could even combine them both and just have the zombies around the hamlet pond....

I recommend that you check out the bases of the dire wolves in this thread: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/226945.page
Also, random rubble, themed for a city and such sounds cool, but I think the swamp thing might be more fun to work with. It also sounds more unique somehow.

Scene: Skirmish between Clan Scryer and Clan moulder. Scryer player revs up the rattling gun:
*roll* 4, *roll* 1, *roll* 6... pause, consider. Moulder player taunts, *roll* 4! Damn! *roll scatter dice*, *aim directly at scryer warlock engineer,* *hit warlock engineer 15 times.* *Surrender* Ooooh, the beauty of Skaven engineering. =) |
