Hey folks,

A group of friends at work are starting back into BFG and I'm definitely taking an interest in joining them.

I think I like the forgeworld Tau ships the best from what I've seen, and I downloaded the rules from their site but am still a bit confused:

- They don't list any "special" rules of any kind. Just seems to be ship stats, classes and point values. Do I use the Tau special rules from the "basic" GW list still or something like that?

- They don't list any min or max unit counts. I'm not sure how many of each ship I am allowed to take?

Any help to clear this up would be greatly appreciated!

The FW list is meant to be in addition to the GW list. Additionally, I think Imperial Armour Volume 3 has a totally new list in it.

No, the list at the FW site is the one from IA3.

The Special Rules are to be found in the Armada list (at GW).

You may take:

1 Custodian per 750pts
3 Wardens per Custodian

rest:
do whatever.

For me, the FW rules simply don't make sense or don't fit well with the GW tau rules - which I'm not a fan of either. When I got around to picking up some nice resin tau ships I had planned on using the attached homebrew list I found off the Internet somewhere (credit to whoever made it, your names are certainly there in the PDF, so nice work!) It looks funtional and pretty fun, and is actually designed to work with the FW ships.

As to its 'legality', unless you're rocking tournaments or something just convince your friends and battle on.

Why? I think the FW list and the list you present (by Xisor and Shinnentai) both suffer from the same thing: they do not evolve enough from the GW armada rules. I mean, you have completely different ships design wise and them the ships have no real changes except some weapon fiddliness.

That aside I think that the FW list is very playable and good.

However, if you want something really special for your Tau ships I think you should download Project Distant Darkness:

http://www.epic40k.co.uk/rules/gothic/ddarkness.html

A ruleset set in a cool background. Not rules to replace any other ruleset but to use in adjunction with (we had the FW rules in mind as they are most used and official).

In this we gave the ships weaponry as the model designer intended, we made the ships turn like they should. Heretical things as well? Oh yeah!

And this year we will bring you two supplements. Scenario driven stories.

The Metal Tau ships are subpar. I like the models, but the rules don't do anything for me. They seem underarmed.

The FW list is fantastic. Individually, they aren't fantastic, but in groups they can lay down the hurt. The FW models also look much better.

I've also read Project Distant Darkness. While I applaud their work and the graphic design of the project, I just feel that their homebrew rules were worth me trying to convince my gaming group to let me use them, when GW had arealdy provided two playable lists.

Hi,

the metal armada fleet is stronger then the FW fleet. Especially 1200pts and upwards. The Explorer/Hero combo is killer.

The FW list is a real raider list. Which is good for their intention.

Ah, well, Distant Darkness does not replace the FW list. It adds to it. Read the story.
But for play I can see why you stick to the FW list.
