For the players that dont use generic warhammer default armies, there are usually many reasons.
Which stories / games / movies etc etc do you love so much that it simply inspires you to
want to creat an army for it? ( None GW perfered for variety purpose )
If possible , (pics of your army , pics of what inspired you , and a little back ground discription! )

I play chaos daemons -- and I frame my army narratively as a former IG regiment, abandoned by the Imperium and possessed by the Ruinous Powers. So the army is meant to look haunted, wretched, a shadow of its former humanity, a group of men reduced to the things of their nightmares.
Examples include "horrors" still clutching their las-rifles:
and "bloodletters" degenerating into mindless, blinded, feral creatures:
and "daemon princes" modeled as possessed sentinels:
 .
For inspiration, I draw on all kinds of nightmares, from Dante and Bosch to H.P. Lovecraft and Clive Barker.
Visually, Mike Mignola's stuff has burrowed its way deep into my subconsciousness. So to has Guillermo del Toro.

Wow i love it tinfoil!
Myself is thinking of starting a project with tons of conversions , but one problem is the 2 army i envisioned has
(A: Tau/ imperial guard / space marine / ) models used ,
(B: Eldar/ Tau / Tyranids ) used.
As cool as i think it'll turn out, it'll probably confused any player i play against to death. So basically the question is...
should i risk modelling an army that will probably never be used , or bought.

Whoops, wasn't trying to hijack the thread or anything. It just sounded like a fun idea for a thread: lots of folks posting a few pics of their non-generic armies, with inspirations.
So thanks for the kind words, folks.
And c'mon, show yours.

I've had the idea for a WFB army based off of Qin Dynasty Terracotta Warriors (using Tomb King rules). There're some sculptors who sell amazing Qin Dynasty soldier models, but if I ever wanted to enter a GW sanctioned tournie, I'd have to convert them all, and that'd be a pain in the arse.
Also: sweet army, Tinfoil. I've been following your P&M Blog - the army is coming along quite nicely!

Tinfoil: Awesome!
Luna: I say go ahead with your converted army. One thing that can help your opponent is to hand them a reference sheet with pictures of each model together with its rules and a reference to what unit it represents. With such a paper I can't see any opponent outside of a tournament denying you the chance to play with your toil of love.
As soon as my BF gets back with my camera, in a week or so, I'll post some pics of my genestealer cultists.

I feel rather lame after seeing that. The only thing I have is more of an umbrella corporation IG army(from RE5).
I have few really decent conversions as they keep breaking. I had a guy waving a chainsword in the turret of my chimera(I want to hit them with my sword), a platoon commander dual wielding lasguns(used catachan arms so he looks like rambo a bit), and a standard leman russ with a standard bearer's flag attached to the turret, the leaf top of a catachan sentinal on top of the hatch, extra track guards attached around the turret, and a leaf bundle on one of the side attachments, no pictures yet, but I'll try to show my russ.
The camo paint sucks so I'm changing it.

tinfoil and oddjob, one word for both of ya'll, wow. I am not much of a chaos person, but I really like the soldiers and the sentinel. oddjob, the avatar is pure awesome. That an that is a neat idea for using the tyraind codex.
For my army, I am currently making a Tau army from the sept of Elsy'eir. A sept better know for its intellectual prowess rather than their martial prowess. It is going to be a fairly standard looking army, though my kroot will have imperial guard and space marine pouches and I am custom making my shaper (I can not stand the metal ones). Also the pathfinders will be custom made as I do not care to much for the models. Plus I like to use the extra battlesuit bits to represent the upgrades on the vehicles. While I may not use them, I would like to make some human troops for this army. Um my inspiration for this army I am a college grad, so a highly educated force appeals to me. Plus the whole idea of having three alien species in one army was nice for me.
Here is the background for my army:
DESIGNATION: 4th Hunter Cadre of Elsy'eir, attached to the 16th Commerce Protection Fleet(CPF)
Sept: Elsy'eir
COMMANDING OFFICER: Shas'O'Elsy'eir'Da'Anuk
Background:
The 4th is one of the few hunter cadres that originates from Elsy'eir. The 4th is a newly founded cadre, composed of veterans filling in command positions and new green recruits strait from Elsy'eir. Shas'O Da'Anuk, while a veteran of the Tau-Tyranid wars and skirmishes with Space Marines and Imperial Guard, has been given her first command. Shas'el Kunas'la'Dyerl is a veteran of the Ork Wars and is also inexperienced with command. Other notable leaders include Shas'vre'Elsy'eir' Raik'ors'R'myr a well know poet warrior, Sha'ver'Elsy'eir'Kais Naga an old but skilled stealth suit leader, and Shaper Omni Khi'haw a veteran and visionary among the Kroot. The CPF also has cadres from Vior'la, Sa'cea, and T'au. Both cadres from Vior'la and Sa'cea are like the 4th and are fresh new cadres, while the T'au cadre is the veteran and command cadre. Early into the 4th's service there has been some hostility and some ridicule from the hunter cadres from Vior'la and Sa'cea, believing that the Elsy'eir troops are poets and talkers not warriors. All members of the Cadre are highly educated and it is not uncommon for the Shas'o to hold Cadre level meetings with the entire Cadre including the Kroot and Vespid auxiliaries. Of interest, all of the vehicles are named after poems, essays, or treatises written by cadre members. As children of Elsy'eir they value education and the skill with the pen as much as skill with the gun.
Composition:
The composition of the cadre is one that is focused on speed. All of the Fire Warriors are in devilfish, and piranhas, hammerheads, and sky rays help to provide mobile firepower. Crisis suits lend heavy firepower where need and stealth suits act as scouts and serve as a source of suppressive firepower. Anuk and D'yerl are both supporters of of auxiliaries and as such both Kroot and Vespid are found in the cadre. The Kroot often serve to outflank the enemy or to hold objectives. The Vespid meanwhile act a rapid reserve, enforcement for objectives, or as support for the battlesuits. While no human auxiliaries are present, Anuk hopes to change that when the fleet visits the Third Phase Worlds.
Engagements:
At the current time, the 4th has only fought orks and tyranids. So far the cadre has aqucitted itself with honor and victory, quieting the naysayers of the Vior'la and Sa'cea cadres. Located near Fi'rios the 16th CPF has yet to move out to the Third Phase Worlds, where the cadres will help to train and support the new human colonists and subjects. During this time skirmishes with the Imperium are expected.

My Dark Elf army involves the Tower of Ghrond in the North, seeing as I play against many Chaos armies.
Someday, over the rainbow, I plan on creating the following:
Drop Ship Guard: Probability 4/5 thanks to the new IG Codex.
Pre-Heresy Marines: 2/5 seeing as how my conversion skills need to be worked at.
Pre-Sundering High Elves: 3/5 a fifty-fifty seeing as how I still need to find a way to nicely mesh Dark elf and High Elf kits.
Finally
Chaos Dwarfs: 5/5 In progress. Someday, I'll post they're pictures.
