Greetings all who are reading this.

I am currently the owner of two types of armies, a Tau army led by the fantastic Farsight!!! And an Imperial guard army (looking forward to the new codex guys!!!

However as the title entails I am interested in Chaos, yes the voices have been talking to me, and I’ve also got hold of a PDF, I mean Chaos codex. Now everything looks really rad with all the spiky bits, I mean the models give you so much freedom, especially I’ve heard of in Apocalypse games.

However I wish to hear from those who field an army what is the best standard 1,500 pts army to play, who’s the best main character, which is the best Chaos God to serve, what are the essential vehicles to use and lastly just what does it that makes Chaos so, well for loss of words lets use ‘spiky’.

So give me information while I go make a sandwich, and make my life that much easier!!!!

Good CSM armies generally involve lots of ... CSM. Seriously. They are really good for their points. As are Plague Marines and Khorne Berzerkers.

The best HQ is definitely the Demon Prince. Immunity to Instant Death, 4 wounds, Warp Time, Wings = YAY! Or :( for your opponent.

I think the current best god is: none in particular. Go mono-god and you miss out on the other cult troops and nifty marks.

Essential vehicles would IMO be rhinos, defilers (with 2 extra DCCW), and that's basically it. The Vindi is also good, I just haven't used it much.

And to answer your last question: It's the topknots. Don't skimp on the topknots.

I've played chaos space marines a lot lately, and it seems to me that the Khorne Berzerkers and Plague Marines are way overcosted. Lost of other armies can seriously outnumber them and simply wear them down through attrition. This combined with 5th edition bringing back serious move or fire mode on vehicles and several other stupid rules design choices has sucked all the fun out right of them.

They're a powerful, boring, repetitive, and unimaginative army. Do yourself a favour and go back to 2003 so you can enjoy the old codex instead.

I've been playing Chaos for a long time, and I have fun with my Black Legion. I like to mix up my troops types, and I routinely use Noise Marines, Berzerkers, and CSM with various icons. I generally use a Nurgle DP with wings and warptime, but I also have a winged sorcerer that I use every once in a while, and while I don't have the mini, Kharn is a seriously good purchase.

What he means is that as a community we should not support people who do not support the hobby. Now here is where you get all defensive and say something about "buying all sorts of minis so I can download one codex" and some inflammatory comments get fired about and the thread gets locked.

That is true. Although, and this is not a lie in defence, I scaned the options part of the Codex for the Chaos thing from a mate of mine!!!! I dont encourage law breaking, isnt this were everyone goes yeh right?? Anyway another question I would like to ask is why did they remove the Iron Warriors thing from the new codex!!!! I mean being able to use a basalisk!!!!!! Do you guys think that this would be giving the chaos forces to much power?

Are you trying to get your thread locked? We don't need another 3.5 vs. 4th ed chaos codex debate. You can still do IW just fine, you just don't get any advantages over other chaos Legions, much like all the codex marines get to use the same rules.

Since when has 3.5e vs 4e debate for the chaos codex got a thread locked? It's obvious that the old one had many more options, and it was really unfortunate how the new one turned out. There's not really anything to debate, aside from which is stronger than the other, which I don't care about.

As for choosing what type of chaos army to serve, do you want to base you army on power or fluff? There are some very strong lists out there if you just want power, namely lash+flying daemon princes, plague marine troops, and obliterators. If you want to base your army on background, just choose whatever you think would fit best, choose your favorite chaos god.

Erm ... you ought to buy a copy of the codex if you plan to play the army. Illegal downloading of stuff is bad.

Im using a res internet connection, so i couldnt download anything if i wanted to!!! LOL!!1 Dont worry lads, I just wanted to look over the stuff before spending cash on something that I cant use!!

Anyway, back to the info. The main reason that I want to get into Chaos is the look of the army. Personally I dont like the look of the Khorn Bezerkers, but if I play then I would use them. Its just that I was thinking that starting a SM army was a good idea, but its the air of being all high and mighty that sends me towards the realm of the Chaos!!!!!

Well, if you're interested in Iron Warriors, model up some cybernetic chaos marines with extra limbs bristling with weapons, buzzsaw arms, etc. call them something cool like "Iron Warriors Feral Servitors" and have them "counts as" berzerkers... or something like that

My friend you have a very good point here.

i love chaos. i started with black legion in early 3rd edition. thousands sons immune to STR 4 weapons, this is where i started. then i got into deathguard for a long time, now im working on the Disciples of Sodomy, a slaanesh force ive been painting up for about a month now.

after that i want to make either the sons of malice or iron warriors using the SM codex. there is just so many options when running chaos.

I dont blame you on the scanning of a friends codex to make sure you like them. I wouldnt spend the money on a codex Im not sure about either. Just dont go blabbing about it, people get annoyed and pissed off about it. I actually used to play chaos and personally the new codex pissed me off so I stopped playing them all together. I dont much care now tho as Im a huge Ork fan.

Why not choose chaos renegades? you get to have chaos + imperial guards mixed in.

Thats the thing, with orks i think you have far more mod freedom.

Really? In my standard list I have: Daemon Prince converted out of green stuff, an Inquisitor range mini, a Fantasy mini, and a modern raptor jump pack

A dreadnought converted out of bits from the old juggernaut, a defiler, an imperial dreadnought, chaos terminators, and the chaos vehicle upgrade sprue

A predator that uses large amounts of Tomb Kings skeleton bits, and some bits from a land speeder to make a "gunners chair" on the turret.

A Land Raider that has a big eye and mouth made out of greenstuff and random horns, spikes, etc. for the teeth.

A Vindicator that is a rhino with a defiler battlecannon modeled into the front, and a bunch of other bits added on.

A large portion of my chaos space marines either have skulls in place of heads, or other skeletal limbs. One of my aspiring champions is holding an entire skeleton up with his power fist.

One of my berzerker champions is a 4-armed marine made out of RTB1 bits... with an axe from somewhere.

Obliterators that are kitbashed out of chaos terminators and possessed (I hate the "real" model).

I've cut wrists, knees, etc. to alter the poses on a lot of my CSMs.

I have a berzerker champion that uses the body of the old raptor champion (the one that's all skulls and daemonic faces) Kharn's head, the axe from an old juggernaut rider, and the hammer from the new fantasy chaos lord.

Chaos has at least as much room for customization as Orks do.

Where is this strange mixed codex you speak of? I've never heard of anything where you can have Imperial Guard allied with chaos space marines.

To answer the original post, fill out your bodies, run 1 or 2 squads of either Berzerkers or Plaguers, Use Lash if your opponent isn't a whiny b*tch, or use something else otherwise. Your best HQ choices will be Lash Prince, Warptime Prince (maybe mark of Nurgle) or the odd Lash Sorcerer in higher point games. Troops are largely subjective, I prefer not to run all cult marines as you will be viciously outnumbred. Obliterators are your best heavy choice, and they own in mass. Again, don't take all Oblitz if anyone you play is whiny. Beyond that, some are units are total trash (Dreads, Possessed, any of the Fast Attack aren't worth it most of the time) and you're better served with more bodies. I'm running a mechanized Chaos list that fails quite a bit because you don't have enough Rhinoes for it to count, or you have just enough, and it gives away KP like candy (except in Ard Boyz tourneys where transports don't count). Land Raiders seriously cut into your troop budget so use with caution, and use mainly for their Assault ability. Beyond that, some units are on the edge of suck/useful, like Lesser Daemons. Hope that helps. Oh, and you can convert the hell out of them.
