Is there already an aztec themed SM chapter?
After looking around on google and the internet it seems that the rainbow warriors (worst name ever) are aztec themed however other sites have said that the rainbow warriors are not aztec themed.
As you can tell im rather confused by this and so i hope i can clear this up by asking the good people of dakka

Well its a tricky question :"P

Ppl are right when they say its not aztec themed.
BUT here is the but.... Its Mayans.

So for us / never mind the minor details ( you can read beneath if you want lol ) Yes there is aztec themed SM chapters.

Other than the geographic location, an intriguing difference between the Mayans and Aztecs is their cultural beliefs, and scientific advances. The Aztecs were very heavy on human sacrifice, they did all to please their gods through these rituals. The Maya, not very heavy on this event, made sacrifices of blood, and only a human sacrifice of a captain of a losing ball team. The Mayas are also a very scientific group, they studied the stars, and have an advanced calendar than our own today. The Mayas were obsessed with time, and studied it through astronomy and their current events. The Aztecs though, were very warlike, they were expansionists, they conquered neighboring tribes and forced them to pay tribute. The Aztecs also placed much attention to the prestige of their warrior males, rather than the Maya, where the city ruler had glory. Another difference is that the Maya was mainly city-states where city rulers had their own sovereignty, while the Aztecs were ruled by one sovereign leader.

No.

Pre-conquista cultures are not used for SM chapters.
No aztecs, maya, inca, olmec or any other of those living south of the US.

So youre free to start one.

Well.... in western . european views maybe.

But if you think about it, it represents all the shades of space marines. blood angels red , dark angels gree, ultramarines blue , imperial fist yellow.

I think its cool.

As for names, sons of quetzacoatl wouldn't be bad, if tou weren't too keen on the animal thing. I also seem to remember a chapter declared excommunicatus for beliwving the emperor to be an animal totem or somesuch. Ceck the wili about it.

Err. it is not like they were neighbors you know, their "centers" were separated by >1000km Azztec Capital is Mexico City Maya big area is south Mexico (>1100 km or so) some examples (London to Marseille or Berlin to Milano), as in Europe they developed different cultures, so i dont think you can just say the "geographic location" as a hard fact form london to Paris are less km and they developed significantly different cultures

This is a false statement, they did not sacrifice to "please the gods" they did it to perpetuate the life of the sun (see: the legend of the fifth sun) and then to gave life in the earth, as in a cycle of life

The Aztecs and other cultures have strong cultural roots in the Mayas, since they developed earlier, so you can actually mirror a lot of religion and beliefs like in greek and roman pantheon. Also all pot maya cultures were by one way or the other very focused on science and different arts, agreed Mayas were Mathematicians but Aztec and other had different specialities. Aztec have the sun stone or Aztec calendar

For the Aztecs the playing of the ballgame also had religious significance, but where the Maya saw the game as a battle between the lords of the underworld and their earthly adversaries, the Aztecs saw it as a battle between the forces of night led by the moon and the stars represented by the goddess Coyolxauhqui and her sons the 400 Huitznahuah, and the sun personified by Huitzilopochtli.[66] But apart from holding important ritual and mythical meaning, the ballgame for the Aztecs was also a sport and a pastime played for fun, although in general the Aztec game was a prerogative of the nobles
