40k MMO - by THQ

Fiscal year 2012, which begins on April 1, 2011, should see the launch of THQ's mysterious Warhammer 40,000 MMO, under development in-house by Vigil Games.

Cool

How the heck would a 40k MMO work? With the level of xenophobia in 40k, each race would pretty much have to be their own faction.

My level 10 guardsman just beat the crap out of a level 2 Space Marine!

I highly doubt that they'll meet the 2012 date. More than likely, it will be pushed out another year or two, assuming that the project doesn't get canned out-right.

probably not yet - but will in the future.

its still early and DOW II was early released.

And expansion.. i believe wouldn't take AS MUCH production as others .

Just pretty much add on the existing system with more graphical models.

Not saying its an easy process, merely that it is easier since they have the engine created.

I think if you look at DOW II in some way its more RPG nature may have been a prototype for their MMO. Maybe rather than controlling a single marine you control a single squad, with the sgt. being treated as your character. Imagine playing through the missions of DOW II but with 4 or 5 players and each squad was being managed by a single player. The Co-op came close to that.

Maybe, except Relic developed Dawn of War/2 and they have nothing to do with the 40K MMO.

This isn't really going to be an RPG...its more of a "oh look a Space Marine", everybody is going to be the mighty Space Marine squad that runs around all over the universe, doing their thing, seeing all sorts of places. Kind of like World of Warcrack, but then with the forced "evil dark future of death" vibe going on. So instead of some elves making a joke it would be some Eldar having a 15 minute monologue on how they get blown up the whole time...

Thinking of it...it's going to be hilarious!

As long as the game has some kind of chain axe weapon I can grind into people's faces, I will at least give the game a trial run.

Everything's better with chain axes.

I doubt SMs will be playable in the beginning. My guess is that they'll be closer to the fluff and only be avalible at epic levels, like the Death Knight is to WoW.

I'm just hoping that it's not too much like an FPS. I don't get along very well with them.

Well I don't remember if Planetside was considered an mmo or not (it should be) but something like that but with 40k races would be about the only practical thing you could do with the genre without stretching the concepts too far.

I don't really think it'd work as an mmorpg at all but who's to say.

That's what "worries" me. If it's anything like Planetstrike, it's just something I won't play. I agree, though, that it and Tabula Rasa are the only games I can see as a feasible basis for what a 40k MMO would be like.

I cant stand MMO's anymore. I played the original Everquest when it came out and saw months of my life wasted. The games are so not fun to me. You just kill, loot, repeat. At least with 40K you interact with your friends, paint, get outside, you know, not live in the basement like the ubber WoW guy from southpark.

Maybe, except Relic developed Dawn of War/2 and they have nothing to do with the 40K MMO.

In both instances THQ is the publisher, so you never know. I don't know how much control they have over Relic, but if they have enough ownership it isn't too hard for them to shuffle development staff from one 40k project to the next, without necessarily moving the project to Relic.

Personally I think its the best way to capture a real battlefield scope of the universe. Otherwise you'll always have a groups moving around that are all a mish-mosh of different character types...
"So you guys ready? Well lets see we got a sanctioned psyker, a space marine, two Guardsmen, and a Sister of Battle. We better keep her away from the psyker *bwammm* Too late."
Or battle fields that are empty except for a handful of lost players...
Or armies of captains and no troops... "I mean who'd raid with a level 2 guardsmen, we'd only want level 60 Marine Captains."

We already have 2 dimensional isometric MMOs. They feature anime sprites and are stupid. They will not turn the game into a giant RTS and if they did I for one would not play it, I don't feel like playing warhamer 40hellgatelondon.

Except the studio working on the game has stated on the official site that every "major" race in the table top will be playable upon release.

In other words, expect Marines, Eldar, Guard, Orks, Tau, and Chaos upon release. I'd be surprised if Nids and Crons are release races.

Where did they say that? I had heard confirmation to the opposite during the first big release of one concept art image and some hushed pre development interviews.

I'll do what I normally do every time the 40K MMO is mentioned. I'll blabber about how I loved Planetside, and wish this game was it, only with better netcode and better fluff.

I can say one thing for sure: If you didn't like Planetside, you're a bad person and are probably going to hell.

I doubt that the necrons or the Tyranids will be playable races. They will be in the game somewhere, no doubt, but playable? Highly doubtful. Look at Warhammer Online. The undead are not playable in any way, but they are in the game. The Nids and Tin'eads just aren't individual enough in their thoughts to warrant being played.
