His 'strong supporters' are going to take umbrage at anything. And if there's literally nothing to get upset about, they just have to wait for Trump to pretend that there is at a 'wasn't I a great candidate' rally.

Like all narcissists, Trump is incapable of laughing at himself and the idea that others are doing so infuriates him.

It isn't about exposing his actions, as you said everybody knows about what he is already. But laughter is the strongest means of breaking a demagogues power and killing the power of the kind of imagery that Trump loves. As Sir Terry Pratchett understood (and Moist Von Lipwig inside the Discworld universe saved the Patrician from), an image of strength and power is utterly shattered by a pie in the face.

Another perfect example of this is how "Springtime for Hitler" from The Producers reduced the propaganda techniques of the Nazis into pure farce and completely shredded their power by doing so. Watch The Producers and see broadway dancers in thigh high boots and glitzy costumes dancing in a swastika and then go and find the picture of the Hitler Youth marching in a swastika formation. The awe and spectacle of the latter is completely undone by showing how it is nothing more than gaudy theatre.

The issue with that is that enemies continue to be enemies, even if friends arn't anymore.

I probably made this point during the 2016 campaign, but let me give American dakka members an example of how Trump drives away his friends.

Trump's mother was Scottish. That fact, and the pledge to build new golf courses up here (Scotland is the home of golf) and create new jobs, generated an unbelievable amount of good will towards Trump.
