The new codex is awesome in terms of game rules. It's awesome in that gives much better fluff than the last one. It FAILS when it comes to its color section.

The last codex had one of the best color sections they've ever done. The Osprey Books inspired artwork showing guardsmen was awesome. It also gave a far superior section on painting IG models offering dozens of paint schemes to get ideas from.

This one is lame. It shows a few models, all basically painted the same way they are on the website and only gives one color picture of the Valkyrie.

It also offers no color pictures of any Storm Troopers, either Kasrkins (which are awesome) or the old, not so good ones.

They put Storm Troopers in the codex and gave multiple options for having models in carapace armor (characters, veterans and Storm Troopers), but no models in the color section at all. Yet we have a whole page on the hideous Vostroyan which almost no one is using or wants to use...

Very confusing...

My FLGS said new PLASTIC Stormtroopers are comin gin the next 6 months, and that there were bits options to make them Inquisitorial Stormtroopers as well.

I'm really hoping that is true, on both accounts.

If this is true, you will find no one happier than I.

I love me some Stormtroopers. I hope they throw plastic melta/plasma bits in there.

As for painting stormtroopers, I'm going to give my entire Guard regiment an Inquisitorial scheme; Black and red just really jumps out at me, and since I'll be bringing Grey Knights along for the ride, it'll be a source for some interesting fluff.

Wow that would be awesome but I haven't seen any of these plastics in any of the standard rumor mills. I'd be somewhat disappointed since I have several units of Kasrkin already and would rather have built multi-part plastics with different poses.

That being said, if they base it on the old Storm Troopers like it looks they might (all the drawings in the codex are of the old ones), then they're going to look terrible unless they really change the sculpting and design of them.

I'm using Vostroyans. They're among the most characterful of all the IG flavours, far better than the generically bland cadians or rambo catachans.

However, if you compared this to other recent codexes, you would already know the answer to your question. Perhaps a little thought rather than insulting someone else's choice of armies is warranted.

Codex Orks: No pictures of Battlewagons, Deathkoptas. Models released subsequently.
Codex Chaos Daemons: No pictures of Seekers or Daemon Princes - pictures of new plastic daemon princes seen later.
Codex Marines: No pictures of Land Speeder Storms, Conversion Beamers, or Ironclad dreads. Models expected in 2nd wave.

So, no pics of stormies? Odds are pretty good that they're in the pipeline for the 2nd wave guard release (probably along with plastic hydras, LR turrets, etc.

I never said something is wrong with someone if they want to use Vostroyans. I was just stating my opinion that they're hideous. Just as the opinion that Cadians are boring doesn't mean something's wrong with me for liking them. Nor have I been offended when people have said that in the past. It's also been my experience that most people think they're ugly models and very few people have been using them in multiple locations I've been playing at. Also from conversations with GW guys at the stores have led me to believe they don't sell well. Again, just because a majority of people think they're ugly, doesn't mean something's wrong with someone for thinking they're not. Sometimes the minority opinion can be the more enlightened one.

I know GW plays games with releases and color sections of their codexes, they've been doing it since second edition. I was wondering what they were aiming at doing this time. I figured they were up to something, and I'm glad my post elicited some rumors from some people.

I haven't encountered many people with that opinion.

This I totally agree with. But it's not really due to the look of the models, it's more to do with the fact that it's an all-metal approach to a horde army, where 10 guys runs you $35 and you need over 100 guys. Vostroyans are not an army for people who just want to play guard, they're too expensive. They're for people who want to play a guard army that looks like it belongs in the grimdark. Add to that the difficulty of getting several of the weapon options (apparently, Vostroyans never figured out how to make an autocannon or a meltagun), and you aren't likely to see them on the table too often.

Again, just because a majority of people think they're ugly, doesn't mean something's wrong with someone for thinking they're not. Sometimes the minority opinion can be the more enlightened one.

I still don't think that the majority think that. I think the majority think, holy crap, I can't afford that army.

I've heard people say that about sisters and guard back when it was all metal Cadians. Never heard that about Vostroyans. It's always comments about how they look like a cross between empire models and old chaos dwarf models with lasguns.

Sorry to jump in, but is this thread not about discussing Storm Troopers? Or did I miss read that title and its really called "The Rumors and Reasons for why most Guard Players play boring Cadians rather than a characterful, though sometimes shoddy looking Vostorians."

Personally I would like to know what Vostorian Storm Troopers would look like. Redbeard do you happen to have any in your army? If so do you have pictures?

Oh and rumor I've been hearing is plastic ST models for Planetstrike I could be wrong, probably am.

I think people loved the previouse storm trooper models actually , they always get fielded when ever the chance appears.

The problem is they are expensive, and people end up using platstic cadians ( werent they called shock troops? ) so i guess people think it fits fluff wise too.

Wow those models were terrible. The guns looks like they just glued random bits together. The poses are terrible, especially the sergeants. The grunts look like solid blobs of metal. They have jagged unfinished lines. They look like they had bits from other kits glued onto them and you can see where the sculpting starts and the bits begin. Yeah they were seriously awful. Especially when you compare them to the Kasrkin Storm Trooper models. The level of detail alone on the Kasrkins blew the old Storm Troopers out of the water.

Now aside from their weapons (which looked like ork power tools), the design actually wasn't bad. If they took the time to sculpt them properly they could look really good. From the couple drawings in the new codex, I have hope. But I would much rather see them do plastic Kasrkins. They were far superior in every way.

I guess this is one of the reasons I was so disappointed with the color section of the new codex (aside from it having only one pic of a Valkyrie and 5 pics of tanks that have been around for 10 years). I really like the Kasrkin models and will be really bummed to see them go away...

I think those models look great, they are infact one of the few older models that I actually like.

And that movie is okay as long as you don't think of it as a Final Fantasy movie, or so I've been told. I never really played those games, the movie was okay though and the Soldiers looked pretty cool.

One reason i like them is they arnt bald and screaming.

which seem to be so rare in GW sculpts now days.

Ugh...yeah, it was okay, but talk about fething bait and switch. Nothing pisses off a gamer and FF fan more than going to see a movie called Final Fantasy, which has absolutely nothing at all to do with any of the games.

Advent Children sucked and I kinda wish I'd never bought it, but at least it was a Final Fantasy movie. To this day I still have no idea what they were thinking when they made TSW or why they put the Final Fantasy title in it.

...err, yeah. And they probably copied this:

I know GW steals from everyone, but I highly doubt TSW was one of their inspirations. If anything they were both copying the Aliens dropship, and so did Halo for that matter.

I have three squads of those old models! I love them!

Of course I am also using Vostroyans, so am obviously a slow. lol

I just lop the silly hats off of the Vosties and they look awesome.

Seriously they have loads of character/detail, just like the old STs.
Karskins look too much like Cadians with a bit more armor and hoses to the guns. IMHO

Those conversions look absolutely insane Nurgleboy. Maybe my problem with those models are the stupid looking hats and mustaches and if you take those away, they actually look pretty decent. I still don't like the Napoleonic era looking lasguns, but you make them look like they belong in a sci-fi game.

I think what makes the Kasrkin look so good is the helmets. The visor combined with an actual futuristic looking gas mask (as opposed to the WW I variety on everything else GW has ever done) makes them look completely hardcore. They're easily the best looking helmets in GW's model range in my opinion. The targeter on the helmet is also reminiscent of Aliens, which is the godfather of design for all futuristic looking soldiers done since then.

I could never figure out why people like the old Storm Troopers. By any objective measure, they're badly done models. People still end up liking things that are objectively bad (like bad movies that are awesome), but I seriously want to understand their appeal, because I just don't get it. Luna, have you really looked at the old Storm Trooper heads closely? Most of them have poorly sculpted, misshapen faces and the ones that don't have even more poorly sculpted misshapen gas masks. They literally look like the sculpter let the model fall over while drying and this partially flattened the side of their heads. The drawings in the new codex try to make them look like the guys in the FF movie (which I think were inspired by Jin Roh), and hopefully the plastics will pull off this look really well.

I would love someone to give me some specific reasons why the old ones are actually good models, because I just don't see it.

The reason i like their design is , i guess the over all flow of the curves. Starting from the helmet, it have a visor that is sharply angled , yet it flows down
to the neck piece ( sharp angle but still smooth too ) down to the back pack , and down to the gauntlet .

regarding the face i cant remember atm but im sure the same sculptor has made other minis ( also i think all GW faces looks bad
and thus its nothing new nor surprise to me xD )

I will admit, the faces on them are bad. They were hard to improve upon with paint. I like the masked ones though, and they go well with my regular Troopers.

That's pretty much how I feel about the Resident Evil movies, they sucked as Resident Evil films, but a generic Scifi Zombie horror they are ok at best.
