I imagine this is a silly question but... is it true that virtually any army or unit makeup is possible in apoc games as long as the opponent says "sure"? Can armies mix codices; take special characters for different armies; use different war gear or transports?

I just can't ever imagine enjoying a battle where I got my brains beat in because I didn't want to deny a friend the use of his uber killy army he modeled, converted, and poured tons of cash into.

The only changes are throwing out the FOC and 0-1 stuff become unlimited, everything else is as the codex says.

You can do what you like, but it's best to come to a "gentleman's agreement" prior to the game. The games play better that way.

Apoc does 3 things:

It helps you play games at larger points levels without the FOC with just about any model GW & Forgeworld has made for 40k that is still supported.

It lets you field models from any army in one force. Want to see Eldrad fortune that 10 man unit of TT/SS terminators? Go for it!

It lets you field groups of models in formations, these formations have special rules that appear in the apoc books, GW website, and in White Dwarf.

However you are still required to use the unit rules unless a formation overrides those rules. For example: I can't field a unit of 100+ ork boys unless I field them as Da Green Tide, a formation from Apoc reloaded.

Thanks I am actually happy I asked!

So from what I gather you can't mix war gear (e.g. no chaos terminators with TH/SS).

Simply no FOCs and since there are no FOCs then you COULD use units from other armies together just as long as you get approval from you opponent.

And then there are added goodies for making specific formations etc.

Am i caught up now?

Pretty much.

The point of Apoc is, if you own a lot of Tanks / Wraithlords / Aspects / whatever, then you get to play it.

All at once.

And you get bonus stuff.

It's great stupid fun.

Because you're allowed (expected really) to use formations from any army that's appropriate you could very well have TH/SS terminators simply by using a loyalist SM formation with them, and in practice most folks would probably even let you then buy marks and such for them as that sort of permissiveness is a key point in the 'anything goes' fun-ness of Apocalypse.

Apocalypse is entertaining to be sure. If you read through the book, you'll find that most of the rules are pretty straight forward and that most of the book deals with ..... well, dealing with that many miniatures on the table.

It's definitely designed to let you drop your entire collection onto the table and play, which is rather nice in and of itself.

Two pieces of advice though.

Try to be aware of the balance between sides. One sided games can end very quickly (which is fine if that's what you're going for), especially if one side has many more super-heavies than the other. Kill the Titan games can be great fun, but if you're looking for a balanced game, you're well suited to have at least an overview of things before hand.

Second, the games tend to take a while, as in an entire day on the low end if you play quickly. Larger games or slower players can easily lead to a full weekend of table time for a single game. To that end, make sure you have plenty of beverages and munchies around and make some sleeping arrangements for larger/longer games.

That's pretty much Apocalypse. You'll certainly not play it all the time, but an occasional big game is pretty cool.
