I picked up the new IG codex this weekend, and I'm sort of torn on it. It seems overly vague on some points and some things I liked from the 4th edition one didnt make it in. It is cool that it has the new entries for valkries and all the heavy support entries are cool. I also like all the special characters. I must admit, I liked the doctrine system a lil bit more than the new orders system, though both seem to have pros and cons. I like that vet squads are now troops choices, I also like the new psyker rules.

I have some questions regarding some of the rules, and I want to know how you would interpret them. I realize there is a seperate forum for rules questions, but I want your opinions, not the official answers. I am also wondering if any of you had the same questions, or which rules befuddled you?

Commissars - the company command squad entry on page 90 dosnt have a slot for commissar, does this mean they can't take one? Or are they only allowed a Commissar Lord? Nork Deddog's rules on pg 67 "Loyal to the end", says if a commissar shoots Norks commander, he retaliates, remove the commissar from play. On pg91, it seems to specify that Nork be added to a company command squad, not a platoon command squad; Do company command squads then have commissars? Does this same rule apply to a commissar lord, even though he has more wounds than a regular commissar?

On pages 96 and 97, both the platoon command squad and infantry squad entries have slots for commissars, yet no points cost is listed for adding one to either squad. Are they meant to be free? In fact, the only points cost listed anywhere for commissars seems to be on page 92, 70 points for the commissar lord. If commissars are not free upgrades, their cost should be lower than the lord commissar,right?



No entries seem to limit the number of a particular squad type, since veterans are now a troops type, can I make platoons that are completely comprised of veterans?

How many special characters can an army contain? Can I take "Ironhand Straken" as an hq choice, use "Nork Deddog" as his body guard, have "guardsman Marbo" as an elite choice, then have commanders "Chenkov" and "Al'Rahem" as comanders of my platoons?

Which squads can ride in a Valkyrie? I know Ogryns can't, what about other squads? How do you resolve shots against the doorgunners? Are they meant to count as sponsons, are they considered valyrie crew? It can transport twelve models, is that a ten man squad plus 2 doorgunners? Or is that for attached commissars? Can it transport Ratlings?

Thats all fine and good, on what page is the points cost for a basic commissar listed? Can a commissar be taken for the company command squad? If not, why does Nork Deddogg have all the commissar specific rules? Why is this codex so vague and seemingly poorly thought out?

In all honesty, that's exactly what a lot of people said about the old IG Codex when it first came out. Then people adjusted. While I think the fluff and photo sections are huge steps backwards, the rules in new Codex are undeniably a huge improvement over the old book. Doctrines were so poorly executed that it's hard to mourn their death. One can mourn what might have been if GW had gone to the effort to do doctrines "right" this time, but they decided to focus on a more generic (but easier to balance) rules set. Besides, it's still possible to field a carapace CHQ squad with six squadrons of carapace Veterans. So the uncompetitive choices of the old Codex live on!

There are certainly some rules in the new book that fill me with burning nerd rage. But "progress" in GW rules have always been several steps forward paired with several steps backward. This time around, I think we've taken more forward steps than backwards steps.

This codex throws a lot of weapon options out without really fixing the units that needed a lot of fixing like Ogryn and Stormtroopers. We hardly ever saw these units before, and probably won't in the future.

However, for the tread-heads, IG vehicles have been included in massive quantities, and that to me far outweighs the negatives. I really don't care that I still "can't" play Ogryn, not when I have nine tanks rolling down the field slinging death. I like IG because I like massive armor, and that completely outweighs not being able to take the units that I never did anyways, or outfitting my officers with weapons I never normally took.
