I had played Epic 40k when it first came out and actually my dad and I had built a modular terrain board and played a couple games with Orks vs. Space Marines. I snagged an Epic Armageddon book when it came out, but kinda drifted away from the hobby before I got a chance to play it. Recently, I was working on cleaning out some of the stuff at my parents' house and deciding what to keep (since I enjoy painting), what to sell and what to trash. My dad mentioned about wanting to finish painting up his Orks and play some Epic again. Being all grownup, graduated, employed and married now, it's still cool to try and get some time to hang out with my dad. This seemed like a great opportunity for a bit of nostalgia and fun. Since he and I both haven't played for years, I figured using the new E:A rules was as good or better as trying to go back and relearn E:40k.

I'm currently trying to get together some Space Marines and Orks so we can play again, but I want to keep it simple so the game won't be too much to handle at once and also because he intends to paint his stuff himself, so I want to keep the workload reasonable. I know it's a relatively small game, but I figured around a thousand points would be good.

For the Space Marines, I was thinking along the lines of:
- Devastator Detachment - 250pts.
- Tactical Detachment - 300pts.
- Land Raider Detachment - 400pts.

I'm trying to figure out what a good Ork force would look like, but I'm not too familiar with the rules yet so I want it to be balanced. I'm looking for some army lists for 1000pts of Orks that might be fairly evenly matched against those Space Marines.

I want to pass on war machines and aircraft for this game to save on the complexity. I've got tons of all the infantry units, bunches of gunwagons and battlewagons, a handful of stompas and numerous traks/buggies/bikes. I currently have no dreds, kans or deffkoptas and while I might pick up soon, I won't be getting any for this game.

So any ideas on some balanced or fun lists? Thanks.

With formations around that size, you'll be able to learn the mechanics of the game, but unfortunately probably won't be able to really appreciate the depths of E:A. It's elegance comes from interactions across the table.

I'm not hugely familiar with the Orks, but I would think a couple of reasonable infantry formations to march across the board and some buggies to try and move up to offer fire support when the infantry engage would be a good start.

Your best bet to learn the game without someone else around to teach it to you is to go through the training missions in every section of the rulebook. They are pretty helpful for getting the basic game down.
