This is great, and classic GW.
GW, instead of identifying the root cause of the problems and fixing them, uses bandaids to stem arterial bleeding.
1) Either:
a) make sure you release models for every unit that you write rules for
or
b) don't release rules that don't have models
Third parties won't have any incentive to create models that don't have rules, and thus threatening GW's IP.
2) Stop with the price rises.
GW prices are now steep enough that third parties can actually compete successfully (legal or not). And now they have to resort to killing their own advertising to prevent third parties from getting the jump on them for their own releases.
Man...I thought it was bad during the ban on internet shopping carts. But 7 years later (and more price increases)...GW has actually made it worse.

Many people KNOW about their product. The 40k IP alone is worth a lot. GW may tank, but as a publicly-traded company they could get bought out by another company.

Back when I was taking economics I used GW as my example company for someone who has great products and history but doesn't know the first thing about running a business. Basically I called them a corporate anomoly, because they never make any sense in what they do yet they still function.
Looking at now, I wish they had done these things earlier because my paper would have been 10x better with all the idiocracy in the ranks.

One release date per month, I can see that.
But there's no point in preorders if it's the week before the release.
I appreciate your point of view, and where would this world be if we didn't haven different opinions on things. I know it seems like madness, even for GW, but isn't the saying 'there's method in madness'?
There's already been a couple of conformations in this thread from different people, and of you ask the staff members in your local store, in the UK at least, they should be able to confirm what I've posted. Hopefully and few more Dakkites will post when they've been told by their local GW stores too.
If not I'll be sure to send you a little message in a couple of weeks when it's been completely rolled out.
I wouldn't be so adamant about it if I didn't know it to be true, however I've just had a scary thought! If GW do suddenly decide to sit up and take notice of the comments on Facebook and the like and decide to do a U-Turn on the whole thing, I'm gonna look like a mahoosive idiot

My nearest local GW is a state away. So that's undoable.
The absolute closest thing I've been able to fish out in conversations with GW staff is that there's a change coming in their "secrecy clause"--and it relates to the fact that GW has gotten the first batch of production photographs from "The Hobbit".
So I dunno.

I'm still really thinking your original source just misspoke. I can see the 'new release' once per month thing being true.
I can even see them shortening it down from a six month window.
What I can't see is them doing a week notice before preorders. If I had to be entirely pessimistic, I'd say we'll see White Dwarf moved up to the second or third week of the preceding month and the releases being previewed in there.

There wouldn't be any profit in it. It's a relatively small fish in an ocean of whales; however, they're the biggest fish in their small pool (the tabletop gaming market) which means no other company would be placed to do it without some sort of leverage. Generally companies pursue M&A activities to augment similar services (ATT trying to buy TMobile here in the U.S.) or to create an easy source for a direction that they want to branch out into or to break the company up and sell it in pieces for a profit. I don't see any of that TBH.
I actually own stock in the company and it's fairly stagnant; the only reason I bought any was a whim since I play the game. I bought a fair amount years ago, sold it and then this last year bought some more when the value was a bit depressed and I was fairly sure it would go back up (it did). I would never recommend that anyone buy enough to attempt a controlling share, even if it were possible since a lion's share of the stock is owned by corporate higher-ups and funds.

Magic has become a complete pile of garbage: if Hasbro takes over GW and does the same damage to Warhammer that they've done to Magic, my models are going in the wood chipper. I played Magic from the beginning, and I've quit twice: both times ironically during something to do with Mirrodin-"unbreakable" was the biggest pile of possible. The idea of Planeswalkers are stupid beyond belief and decks revolve around them. I know-if Hasbro takes over GW they can bring primarchs/leaders in: they'll cost about 700 points a pop but give you access to a full second FOC. Bloody stupid If GW gets bought out by another miniatures company and prices go down but the game stays the same way it is now (5th ed 40k needs a couple fixes but 8th ed fantasy is FAR better than any of its predecessors), I'd be all for it. But if Hasbro takes over? Hell no. They ruined Magic, they ruined my Marvel Legends figures (I used to collect), and if they buy and ruin warhammer I'd flip. Anything Hasbro touches is on my automatic "no" list. I already said I won't keep buying GW at these current prices, but I'd rather not have to stop playing too. If Hasbro gets its hands on GW and makes ANY changes, I will-I have that little faith in the company. (my tiniest apologies possible to anyone offended who actually like what Hasbro has done with anything)

This is beyond dumb. Dont they realize that if they let the hobbyists know a month ahead of time, that they would more then likely get even BETTER sales numbers on release dates? It would allow people to actually save up money a decent time in advance. I dont fething get them at all. Its honestly like they want to just let the company die so they can sell off whats left

Here in Australia I can confirm this from all the staff (3 staff members including the manager saying the exact same thing) at the local GW. I have discussed it with them and there is a general grim darkness in the air around the regular customers (myself and a dozen others).
I was told that this was going to occur the Dark Eldar release the day the black box was supposed to arrive (that very morning). I was extremely disappointed that day but apparently they received an email at midday at the last second saying they were going to receive a black box (that is a few weeks before the release unlike the current trend).
Summary: morning of DE wave to come in black box, got news of new pre-order method (black box on day of release, pre-order only one week earlier), raged, left. Came back afternoon and found GW had reneged with an email at midday, the black box was receieved shortly after.
I admit I was more annoyed after finding out GW had reneged than if the black box hadn't come out until a week before the release, it's just GW screwing with my head now...

Yep, I'm surprised. Unless it was actually "Codex: Chaos almost as powerful as Space Marines!" so they could sell more Space Marines. Dang I think I figured out their new marketing thing. Use all not marines codex's to advertise marine codex's, brilliant.
It's a shame that space marines are ugly, and I will never own them.(my own opinion on the waste of advertising space marines to me in the codex of the army I actually want)

I'm finding all this tripe difficult to swallow. I've only been into 40k for eighteen months and it's like they're trying to quash my ability to enjoy my new-found hobby.
I live in Australia so they're trying to make it impossible for me to afford. I already know a good few friends trying to do 40k on a budget. Though the ridiculous thing about "not shipping to Aus/NZ etc" is whenever these situations come up (and this happens with another hobby of mine where a brand of equipment can't be sold outside a certain country) is a "friend" buys it and sends it to you "as a gift" and you're SO GRATEFUL! you just happen to transfer them the amount is was worth.
Not announcing releases...... err.... are they actually trying to kill their own business? No build up, no special events for new releases (because noone can plan them because they don't know), no pre-orders, as has been mentioned a number of times, no building excitement around a new release. I mean, how am I meant to know if I should organise my Necron Hallowe'en Party if I don't know if they'll be released in August or November?
I've always been one to not bitch too much about companies that provide the means for so much fun and enjoyment by producing 40k and are trying to turn a buck at the same time but...are they actively trying to destroy their own product?

"Why don't GW want us to play anymore?"
Old players and new alike are feeling awfully hurt by all this.

All these, erm, brilliant maneuvers by GW lately have resulted in a dilemma.
On the one hand, the trade restrictions don't affect me as a U.S. citizen (yet), I'm at a point in my career that the price hikes don't phase me at all, and spending less time scouring the web for rumors would probably be good for me.
On the other, they are such unrepentant dicks that part of me wants to /ragequit anyway.
