Geology's part of Geography at that level, thus why I made that point. You don't need to go to uni to study the former to know how a volcano works.

I just noticed you are British so that probably is the mix-up. I had geography and geology tout as different part, you must have had them taught together.

It's a pseudo-scientific viewpoint. In other words, you think like this when you know just enough to make really serious mistakes.

Well would you look at that, Manchu. Bill Nye brought up your argument on why the natural laws changed. Perhaps not directly in a theological sense, but still in a way that he would have to explain it.

Is it me or is Ham assuming a disrespectful stance by constantly leaving the stand to sit down when Nye's speaking? Its coming across as though he doesn't think he needs to listen to him (and judging from his responses he isn't).

But Chongara is still correct: Ham can answer Nye about the absence of evidence that natural law operates differently now than before by saying "because God." And that's why it ends up being a theological argument, i.e., an argument about what God is like and how God relates to everything else.

"Explain the stars and celestial bodies"

Ham: "Because God's just so awesome he wanted to stick up some bling to gloat a bit".

Does Ham address the age of stars in the first question? And yea, you're right Manchu. I'm unsure on how you would argue against that in a theological sense I guess.

Edit: Seriously...God made the universe because bragging rights? Really?

He said that God created the stars to show off. He didn't state when this was done. It can be assumed that his answers throughout will be "because God", with no further details.

But if he believes in the literal interpretation of the bible it says all the stars were created in the same day. Logically, all the stars -have- to be the same age.

Lots of "we can't determine how the natural laws worked because we couldn't observe them in the past" going on from Ham.

Inb4 Nye unveils a time machine, goes back in time 8K years and documents all the rules and laws working the same.

Yeah, I tuned out a bit when the videos of creationist scientists started--not only is it just an argument from authority, it's just a waste of time. Nye could have responded "Newton studied alchemy and seances, calculus can still be proven" and moved on.

This entire debate is to the embarrassment of the United States. The sadness in Nye's voice when he spoke about the erosion of scientific education in the southern states and the encroachment of religious dogma to smother children's education there... Really quite sad and pathetic.

Given the other bits of awesome crazy that Newton did, seances are pretty low on the totem pole.

Such as putting a needle around his eyeball and rattling around at the skull side of it just to see what would happen.

Can I just say that when that happened in Quicksilver I had to put the book down for a bit. It turned my stomach.

Bill's got a good point. All of Ham's 'predictions' were done in the past with answers adjusted to meet them. He has yet to make an actual prediction himself on something that'll happen in the future based on the Creationist method.

And I wish they would zoom in on Bill's face when Ham used that damned 'It's in a book already' line. Twice. I want to see what ultimate disappointment looks like.

"Now everybody hold hands." "Just a second, I need to adjust my wig."

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Half of ken's rebutles are "I'd like to remind you that there's a book out there..." He has yet to have a reasoned argument that is not just "The bible says it. It must be true." Just imagine if this happened.

Did he just say that meteorites are older than the earth? "They didn't date rocks from earth, but from space". Um, so the Earth is 6000 years old, but bodies beyond it are much older? Contracting himself and the bible a wee bit there?

Well yeah. He knows he can talk complete gak and still have the extremists following him because he's defending the word of the bible against a detractor. It doesn't matter if he's misquoting it or bending the facts, he's already vindicated in the eyes of his followers.

Now he is saying that he gets to pick and choose what parts of the bible he considers true. Oh boy.
