In the rewrite I did when I got home, I tried fixing that...

What I was thinking..." Any Knight not visible by at least 25% line of sight can only hit on a unmodified 6. Banners and weapons do not count. Rule of rational thinking... If you can't figure between 1 and 24 then you don't have a target!"

We should be better next year as we'll be bringing our own terrain. This should help with the guessing issues.

I've also removed the Porphyrion from the list. It's too Powerful and will only be used as a Gun emplacement. Not what this game was intended to be. I'll have two additional Knights next year. An additional Lancer and a Acheron.

If I remember correctly. You never died (WM). I believe I died 3 or 4 times. Almost every turn from the 3rd on. Mostly from Ramos. Once from Moon. Good times. Our Queen did the same to Moon several turns.

More pics tonight.

OH-I Wanna get out of here

I didn't die, but I did play like a wuss. I let others come to me and never went in alone.

It'll be interesting to see how the new gunboat knight, as well as the baby knight, would stack up in this.

So far I'm concerned the 'Gunboat' Knight will be to powerful and the 'Baby' Knight not powerful enough. I'll wait for the rules before including or excluding them.

So... I'm looking for feedback on the game from the Wardens. Be specific in your suggestion. Such as if it's rule related, game flow or even behaviours.

What did you like/dislike?
What would you like to see or not see changed?
If I played this publicly as an event what changes/modifications/advice would you change from our 'Wardens' game?

I'm open to all criticism, even if it's at me. when I got a good chunk of responses I'll compile them and post them with out identifying anyone.

If you want to send it to me privately, send me an PM in Dakka.

Thanks for your help.

Sent privately.

For others, most of my comments had to do with speed of play and adhering as closely as possible to regular 8th Ed rules. Speicifcally most of my comments had to do with changes I thought necessary if SL was going to take this event public... for our private "gathering of friends", they were less important.

As far as the "warlord" and "mini" knights go. I'm with SL on this one. Like the Porphyrion, they have the chance of throwing game balance off, which I think is very important in this game. I would recommend that for a public game the knights be provided so the sides could be balanced by the TO and the shenannigans minimized.

I can see the mini-knights being easier to accomodate than the warlord. Perhaps offer each team of 5 six different knight choices, (one being a group of 2 or 3 mini-knights), giving the team a bit of flexibility in what they want to go with. Keep in mind the mini-knights are just glorified dreadnoughts with an invul save... so they should be easier to keep out of the line-of-fire but will pop readily enough when fired apon.

I'd be interested to play a version without the king/champ roles, just to see if it had a meaningful impact on the flow of the game. Alternatively, maybe the removal of the buffs and rerolls, since they were forgotten several times anyways.

I'm not sure we need to not have the stubber/melta anymore, or that all the knights get rockets. Since everything can do wounds, why not run full wysiyg?

... and yeah, the playing cards bothered me. After all the money that SL spent securing that wonderfully thematic and visually stunning table for us to play on. I found the use of the playing cards on the models increditbly disrespectful.

With 30-45 min or more between doing things if you got a high or low card, and it changing from round to round, I found it was the easiest way to keep track. Unless there is a GM or whiteboard or something, I don't see another good way to not spend 5 minutes figuring out who is next because someone got disengaged. With the card on the model the whole team can see who is next. They were having the same issues in the AT event. I think it's the problem with having a high number of people (which I like for our group to have as a big get together, but it may be to many people for an actual event).

Understood. I had several recommendations that would address that. Drop the X-wing model for activation, limit it to 10 people total and put each team on a chess clock.

Im on the fence about the activation bit with the cards. On one hand I loved the variability of it all but, to whales point, it could be a very long time between your moves. I agree with downsizing to 10. I would do away with the king/ champion business too. Everyone doing there own thing would speed up game play. I liked the table and terrain but i agree that some ground rules should be set on LOS. Instead of the random cards every turn, I think a set order of activations would be a nice compromise.

More Pics

A bit blurry. but looking from our oppoments table edge

Ramos attempts to punish me for my insolance, but falls short with all that firepower, Unfortunitly Moon finishes the task with his Thermal cannon thus I start back on my teams board edge.

Git still in the fight and my place is taken up by Joel's Castagtor. Two pics from different angles...

Overview as the battle progresses.. Note Thing2's knight (bottom of pic) rushes to take out our Porphyrion ( Our desiginated Queen)

Lots of destruction in this pic.. With Gits destroyed, Our King goes after WM Castigator. Gunthers Magdera and Cleansing Flames Knight push forward on the opposite side of the table. What happed to thing 2?

Ritide maintains a sniping position ( bottom left ) much to the distain of Gunther and Cleansing Flame trying to pick him off.
Another death for me. Moon returns again to end our Glorious Queens reign of distruction ( bottom left) Git move his lancer ready to strike .Joel's Castigator holds firm though it 1 against 4.

Our king still lives..for now

Gunther and Clensng Flame prepare to rush the Breach (and end the terrorist Ritides shooting reign forever)

yet he remains unconcerned

Last one I took...

CONGRATS to Miss J ( my naming ) for being the player with the most points. Though they took her out in the end she made them pay dearly. Huzzah!
Wardens if you have additional Pics, feel free to post.. also still intrested in your feedback.

Hey Solar, thanks for running the event. I had a lot of fun playing it.

I think your best bet might be to just play it like a regular 8th edition game for the event. Seems like there is enough confusion with the basic rules, so the more you add, the more you will get.

Maybe an alternating activation would be the way to go, but I would use the Necromunda 17 model on that then. You activate, move shoot and fight in one turn. That way a player only gets to do his thing every so often, but when they do they are the star of the show.

Also, I would go for dice off the table, everything off the table, because the pictures are great and it would keep it less cluttery and more thematic.

I would suggest having laminated cards for each night with dry erase markers to keep track of important info- wounds dealt, wounds taken etc. Like how warmachine was (or maybe still is?)

The 25% rule you suggested Solar would be key I think. That would make the Porphyron not the worst. You and I seemed to be the main recipients of its attentions on either side when we weren't beating the crap out of each other. In a friendly like we play, it's funny. If it was a public event with strangers, probably way less funny.

The pink army always wins. You beat the pink army? Go ahead and brag about it. You lost to the pink army? Well, then....

Thanks moon. Good suggestions. Look forward to you painting your own Knight for next year. If it's anything like what you done quality wise with your Necromunda figures, it be stunning.

Update…
Thanks for all those who gave me feedback. I have taken all the suggestions and am working on updated rule set for Knight Fight. One for our Adepticon Wardens group and another for more open play that I hope to be using as a hosted event at next years Adepticon 2019. I won’t get into details about the rules just yet till I’ve have a chance to play test some of them to insure they work as intended. Some of the issues we hope to resolve are the Line of site rules, Victory Points, and the turn sequencing. More to come.

Last couple of years we were fortunate to have played on a cool table/board. Though this wasn’t exactly a 40K table; it was well built, detailed and well painted. The first year we stumbled upon this as an open play table and it added a lot to the overall look and enjoyment of the game. Last year we were hoping to do as well and fortunately we managed to rent the table again.
Oddly I never got the owners info and basically took a gamble that he’d be at AC this year and that the table was available. Fortunately, it was but at steeper price (supply and demand at work I guess). Ironically during the day, he was running his own version (non 40K) of Knight Fight on the table. (… some quote about ‘imitation being a form of flattery’ comes to mind).

With all that; cost, availability and not quite having the right look for what we wanted to play on or potentially run as an event next year, I decided to start an new project. Knight Fight Terrain board.
I’ve started collecting MDF building and structures. I’ll heavily modify them in a more 40k fashion. Giving them a more mechnicus feel. In order for this to be successful there would have to be some overall design changes.

Firstly, they would have to fix and not cause confusion to the line of site rules. LOS was a problem on the old terrain. Just following the rules enabled folks to stand and shoot the whole game. Terrain on the new board needs to be tall enough and not allow ‘fudging’ of the site rules.

Secondly, the fire lanes need not run the length of the table. This made the game stagnant as knights again remained stationary covering vast swatches of the table with little risk. Inherently not the flavor of the game.

Lastly, the boards overall look was too 20th century, It was well built, Well painted and the originality of the buildings was super; it lacked the look of a grimdark 40 verse. So, the new design will have to be original but 40k familiar.

Like I mentioned earlier I’ve been ordering some MDF kits from various companies to see what will work best. I’ll should have the majority of the test pieces by the end of July and then make a decision on what ones to reorder. Following that I’ll start the table design layout. Once that has been done I’ll try to get a few playtest games in to test the layout (and rules aforementioned). Once satisfied I’ll start painting and detailing the buildings.
I’ll document the process here as best I can. (mostly weekly ...here's hoping). More to come.

I love the update, Solar_lion!! I have one question, though - have you considered taking a step up to "Titan Fight" given that Adeptus Titanicus is coming out in August (plenty of time for folks to get some built and painted for the spring)?

The terrain would obviously have to be different, but the models themselves would lend perfectly to a very similar game to what we've done the last two years

Spoiler:

I'm totally up for Knight Fight, of course, but this will definitely be the hotness next year and it might give us all a cool project to work on in the interim to get one ready!

I think it's because we all already have Knights... so no extra extravagant expenditures are needed for the knight fight.

I want that Necromunda t-shirt!

Just throwing it out there - would it be possible to maybe have 2 or 3 of the Armiger Warglaive knights instead of a bigger knight?

So let the Updates Begin.

Like I mentioned in my previous post the New Board will to include some necessary game elements missing from our pervious AC boards. I won’t know the exact layout of the board till all the Terrain pieces come in and I get to playing with different configurations.
Objectives to reach…
1. Line of Sight.
a. Must be minimized. I don’t plan to use many ‘Open’ buildings – meaning with the potential to ‘See through. Through windows will be present they will not be eligible to target an enemy. I will try to eliminate any smaller structures that are not at least the height of the Knights (yes Cerastus knights)
b. No Open Firing Lanes. So, nothing longer the 24 inches in any straight corridor. All the Knights can at the Minimum traverse a 7in gap, so most likely no greater than 8in for any passage. Currently I wasn’t planning on including any large openings if possible. I don’t want the fight to center around any large opening. Though in reality this may be impossible an it really depends on the final makeup of the building on hand.
2. Theme appropriate
a. Must be recognizable as 40K Terrain. The intent will be a combination of buildings both Industrial and City in appearance. Must have lots of little touches that make the table unique.
To start I have ordered some MDF Kits from various suppliers and even a go fund me type Kickstarter project that should give me a good variety to experiment with.
Here is a list of suppliers that I have, will be considering or will be ordering from. Some are amazingly detailed while others are just the very basic.

Gamecraft Miniatures http://gcmini.mybigcommerce.com
Miniature Scenery https://miniaturescenery.com
Promethium Forge https://promethiumforge.com

There are probably more. Some of these purchases are for the initial Buildings. Others are for bits and pieces to add to, modify and use to decorate. I’ll be needing all sorts of polystyrene bits from the train store as well as piping from the local Hardware store.
I’ll do most of the painting with spray cans for priming and basecoating; though I can break out the big compressor and Autobody gun if I get behind.
Timeline. Well the ultimate deadline is Adepticon next year. I still will have to wait to submit my idea as an event to the Powers to be on the event committee. Looks like sometime in August the open submissions are taken. By the end of August, I’d like all the base Buildings to be built and based. Followed by a local attempt at playtesting.
I’ll try to post some pictures of the stuff I have currently built in my next update.

Ritides, I’m so in for the Titanicus..My first box game was the original. I'm so hoping play it next Adepticon. I not changing format till I see the game. Do with what I have.

Moon, Not sure how to manage the resurection when they come back in. More to ponder

So Adepticon has confirmed that I will be running 2 Knight Fight games next Adepticon. Once on Thursday and one on Friday. I'm still planning on Saturday for us. I really enjoy getting all of us together. Highlight of the event for me.

I have started on the terrain. As I have a new phone, I am slowly getting used to the new camera and features. So I'll have some pics up soon.

One of the cool things is one of my close friends has a laser cutter and works in the prop industry. She is designing and building some base buildings for me. I have to get one of these.

I have a couple of more deliveries and loads of assembly to do. I have to be finished with the layout and major assembly by the end of the year. Detailing and painting will probably take a couple of months with balancing work and home.

Made a edit through the rules again as well. Looking forward to hearing your comments and seeing you at Adepticon.

The smack talk between Ice and WM was a traditional highlight of the game. Lord help anyone who was the target of your combined onslaught. We will be the poorer with out WM for sure.

Will we be void of any others? I know Gunther, Joel & I will be there. It be nice to have a full game Saturday night.

Although this is not the final layout, as I still need additional buildings; some still in transit. It shows the look in general.
Note there will be a lot more details to each so it looks more grimdark. As an added bonus I will be adding done small detail representing each one of you wardens. You'll have to find it when you look at it.

It'll be good to have both Things back this year.

I have a new rewrite of the rules. I took alot of the suggestions you guys gave me. I made a lot of changes to speed up play. Eliminated random sequencing. All inclusive single activation phase and added more definition to the assault rules. Made the VP's scale to reward more aggressive play ( physically location within your opponents 1/2 of the table gives more pts)

I kept the King/Champion concept, but modified their abilities.I also made the selection random.

I look forward to play testing the changes.

Got a real work free weekend. Haven't been able to get this much time all year.

So put together a bunch of kits. Again just assembly. I'm still waiting for 2 more deliveries. With those I'll be able to play with the layout with all the available buildings.

Here is some pics of the latest layout. I have managed to eliminate the open fire lanes from deployment zone to deployment zone. However the side to side lanes are pretty open the length of the table. Not sure I'll be able to solve all those.

Here is some pics of the latest...
