Huzzah for the original Incubi minis. Great shots all around.

Thanks TH! I'll pass on the compliments to Tzurk jr

Cheers youwashock, beyond nostalgia there's not a lot to like about the old DE range, but the Incubi are definitely one of the highlights. They seem much more lithe and mobile than the new ones, and their weapons are a lot more practical!

No work done yet, but a new arrival did come today (and not another baby! ). Before that though, some rollover pics - bunch of spoilered Kill Teams ahoy!

Spoiler:

Kill Team Ashlander Exodites

Kill Team Dark Eldar

Kill Team Tyranids

Nids v Escherquins

Kill Team Escherquins

Kill Team Necrons

Kill Team Krieg (old minis, but I didn't want them to feel left out!)

And tzurk jr's dinos!

So this lil flying jellyfish arrived today, ready to be turned into a netch weapons platform for my Ashlander Exodites Kill Team. He's a lot taller than I thought, about twice the height of a regular weapons platform, but oh well, he fits the theme and I love the mini. The seller threw in a few little friends for free too, so they will inevitably show up somewhere.

Here's the model he's based on from Morrowind - will paint him up in similar colours. I have a starcannon ready to attach but it seems a little bulky on his frame; I might end up using some Dark Eldar weapons instead.

I've also had a think about the silt strider. A user on reddit suggested canoptek doomstalker legs; they do seem like a great fit in terms of silhouette and the mech/organic mix is something I'm already trialling on the netch weapons platform. That plus a harpy carapace seems like a good start; season with a lot of sculpting practice and some Eldar heavy weapons. If I run the silt strider as a falcon, and build a whole unit of wraith blades instead of just one for Kill Team, I end up with a nice little 500 pt army to use in skirmish games.

Not locked in yet and still looking, maybe try a few third party places too, just not sure where to start. If anyone has ideas, I'd love to hear them!

Thanks for looking everyone and happy painting 8-)

the strider indeed seems like the natural choice, unless of course you want to get "inventive" (aka grab knive+greenstuff+ model and start playing frankenstein.)

Also, all the KT's looking good and junior has inherited the talent it seems

You're able to go from concept to execution in such a short amount of time! Really impressive, the winds of hobby magic must be blowing freely for you. Love the exodite warband, my experience with Morrowind was fairly brief and I was fairly young, but I remember being really into those floating land jellyfish. Can't wait to see what you do with it!

Thanks Not Online!! - after failing to find the bits I need at any reseller and not wanting to fork out $200 on minis that may not even work together the way I hope, I have decided to go with your idea and ordered some milliput and tools to see what I can come up with. Wish me luck!

Don Qui Hotep, thanks mate! They are really kind words and I am humbled by them!

I've managed to do a bit of work here and there on the netch (getting tzurk jr into painting has made it pretty easy to get a few ~5 min blocks in!) and have gotten him ready for priming. I found a position where I liked the gun and bulked it out a bit with some of the leftover platform pieces and some bits from an admech gun. I kind of like his aloof War of the Worlds pose - run puny human, blam blam blam!

While the jellyfish himself was a really high quality print, the base was a bit shoddy with super obvious print lines. I did like the interesting shapes it had though and wanted to keep them so I slopped on a couple layers of Stirland Mud, then went about detailing. I added a bit of a dwemer ruin on the back as well as some dunmeri/ashlander spears, and a few scattered bones. I think I was trying to play up a bit of the contrast between high and low tech that was present even in the original game.

I wish I had started the base before I stuck the netch down. It's gonna be a pain to get in there and paint the insides of the tentacles.

I'm excited to get some paint on him! Slow and steady I think will be the way to go at the moment.

Thanks for looking and happy painting everyone 8-)

that turned out promising.

As for the whole leg question, it might be beneficial to use wire for a baseline skeleton for the legs, and then sculpt arround them?

That is merely spitballing though.

Cool work on the netch, I think you’ve integrated the weapons well and the base looks pretty good now. Good luck getting the odd 5 mins in here and there

Thanks Arakasi! Painting it is going to be a bit of an adventure; lots of large smooth areas to try and add texture to with paint.

Not Online!, that's the plan. The extent of my knowledge on sculpting has come from watching people like theCrowe's progress in their blogs on dakka, so will try and find some more info but excited to have a dig.

Thanks gobert, I was originally just going to have the gun hanging off the side and play pretend that all the wiring etc was internal, but there were one or two gaps that looked a bit odd.

Ragsta, he was a proxy mucolid spore from ebay. You can find him here: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/1-Custom-Tyranid-Spore-Mine-Mucolid-Proxy-Warhammer-40K-Space-Hulk-D-D-RESIN/173911313027?hash=item287dec0a83:g:0PQAAOSwQc1dqllm&frcectupt=true

EDIT:

Bit of paint on him. Started a lot of areas and haven't finished any yet. Ummed and ahhed about whether I was going to paint the gun parts Glass (silver/green) or Dwemer (bronze/teal), and ended up going with both. Think I will have to work a bit on differentiating the bronze from the leather though. I was also originally planning to go a lot greyer on the leather parts but then thought that it should probably match the leather that the Exodites are wearing. Might meet somewhere halfway.

the skin is really daunting me. I might try and mottle it up to an extreme light blue, just not sure whether to mottle the inside or outside. of the legs. Also want to somehow differentiate the smaller inner tentacles, I might try and push them more towards purple.

Mottling would be good. I suspected the organic parts might be soft on details and it shows with the paint. It's not true to your source material, but catbarf's Hive Fleet Karkinos might provide some inspiration (and he has a blog and video tutorials too).

Great start on the painting, I like the sound of the mottling too. I’d make life easier by doing it on the outside of the legs, but purple inner legs sounds cool too

Thanks everyone!

Arakasi, that is a really lovely scheme and I wish I had seen the tutorial before going in blind on my jellyfish boy!

I've plodded a long a little on it. I don't love it at the moment but don't hate it either. Not sure if I should extend the "neck" leather up to the "eye" leather or repaint it all blue again. After looking at catbarf's stuff I'm wondering about introducing a bone grey sort of colour inbetween them and stippling them together.

Not sure...

The bronze is still too similar to the leather as well. Need to fix that somehow.

Will keep at it. Any thoughts or feedback very welcome at this stage!

The mottling is looking good. I’m not convinced about merging the eye and neck leather, the blue around they eyes looks nicely ethereal in contrast to the earthy leather. For me carbarfs technique works best on surfaces of similar materials. Just my 2 pence tho

Thanks guys!

gobert, I think you're right in that I do need some contrast in that area. Still not sure what I will do with him, but thinking that extending the leather down a few of his major tentacles is the way to go.

I haven't done any painting in the last week or two but did throw together some new basing materials after looking at the team on the shelf and thinking the ones that lacked Dwemer parts were a bit plain.

The solution - mushrooms! A huge part of Morrowind's aesthetic and dotted all over the continent. I think I will paint them up as a mix of Luminus Russula and Violet Coprinus.

Put them on the flamer/fusion guy who arrived the other day.

Primed the rest up to add to the other guys' bases!

Also put some shelf mushies on the netch's base to break it up a bit. He will get a good does of toadstools as well.

Hopefully (fingers crossed, touch wood) make some time for painting soon.

Cheers everyone and happy painting!

Haha, those mini Mushrooms are awesome
And a great ides. Granted i am probably one of the few people on this planet left that never really looked into skyrim (been always more off a fallout guy) a cursory google and i'd say yeah, that will come close.

Thanks all! Glad the mushies are going down well, I was worried they might be a bit sporing with all the other dull colours. Thought about putting the idea back on the shelf. There's not mushroom left on the bases for adding extra stuff so it's lucky they turned out alright. It was morel or less what I was hoping for!

A bit more painting done on them. Still some tidy up to do.

Happy painting all 8-)

Thanks dudes, appreciate the comments!

I finished up melta guy and that makes a legal Kill Team! Still need to find a head for the seer and buy a box of wraithguard and sculpt the silt strider to expand into a small army.

I am really happy with his eyes! Such a tiny detail but I think the are the first pair I've ever painted that still look good in the photos.

I stuffed up the eyes on his helmet though according to the pics, and I think I will go back in and make them orange anyway just to distinguish a bit from the colours on the mushrooms as they are very similar atm.

And the whole warband! I made a few little changes here and there too; like painting the storm guardian's gloves from chitin back to leather. Something about his mishmash paintjob was annoying me and I couldn't pin it down for ages, then it clicked that the white gloves made him look like a butler or waiter or something. I am much happier with him now! I also added the green glass gems to the ranger's chestpiece. I left these off originally to stick more closely to the chitin armour from the game and also as a nod to ranger's stealthiness but I think I like the added colour pop much more.

Big happy family!

I pulled out some more old metal DE models too to add to their Kill Team - some wyches and old grotesques that will play as Wracks now. They are already built and primed so they might be something I can plod along with next.

Cheers for looking and happy painting everyone 8-)

Excellent work! What a cool, distinctive, and coherent warband. My favorites are melta-gun, the spear, ranger, and lava-mace. I like the mottling on the netch.

Are the bases of the mushrooms just toothpicks?

Fantastic looking Eldar, the mushrooms are so good and the floating weapons platform is excellent. I've never played Morrowind but the Solstheim DLC for Skyrim gave me a good impression of the landscape.
