Thanks everyone!

So not had a lot of motivation at all these past weeks. Just one of those things, but did a lot of scenery for a D&D game at the end of August.

Most recently, I started on a Mordheim warband. These bits are all very old so excuse the occasional bits of paint. These are very WiP. Looking forward to getting some paint on them, probably paint them as Talabeclanders, my favourite province.

In other news, finally managed to have a game of 6th edition with my good friend and his Orcs and Gobbos!

Unfortunately I was betrayed by the dice gods at every turn and by my own foolishness
This was our first game of 6th edition in over a decade, so it was a lot of checking things out with the rules.

Played a 500 point Border Patrol using the Capture scenario. Both armies sought a magical repository hidden in a ruined tower somewhere in the Badlands. I will do a follow up with a little narrative soon!

My army consisted of:

A commander embedded in 14 spearmen, 10 archers and 5 shadow warriors.

They faced off against a Shaman, 15 orc boyz, 10 arrer boyz, 5 wolf riders and a doom diver catapult.

The lack of magic and the dice sought to defeat me at every turn. The doom diver landed square on the spears and took out 6, severely ruining their effectiveness.

My only real luck was a failed animosity which led to the orcs 'aving a scrap! Which led to the orc boyz charging and battering their comrades.

The Shadow Warriors killed 2 wolf riders and 2 orc boyz the entire game, the shadow walker hit every time but never managed to finish the job. I kept rolling 4s and 5s to hit and 1s and 2s to wound!

I need a much better army for next time!

Definitely led by a mage, maybe with a bolt thrower.

Cheers for now!

Oh yes, some awesome Oldhammer there! I loved the crazy Orc stuff, doom divers and scraps between the ladz. Sounds like you had fun despite the defeat though. I like the sound of a mage and bolt thrower joining the mix too.

The Mordheim gang should be fun, and it’d be cool to see your terrain too

Cheers Gobert, yes lots of fun all the same. I'll get those Greenskin gits next time!

So inspired by that game I did some work finishing off my remaining High Elf project. First purchased between... 1999-2003 I believe.
Fair old age to them now but still mighty soldiers

This is the original unit of spears, glad they are finally getting a new lick of paint.

Now for something a little different, I wonder how many people are converting old High Elves in 2022?

You can still see the remenants of the goblin green bases that survived the simple green treatment back in 2019!

What are they you ask? Well my High Elf army hails from Chrace and I wanted to add some "Lothern Sea Guard" only these instead hail from neighbouring Cothique.

Cothique Elves are always described as more akin to corsairs who sail the seas and prefer raiding attacks rather than open warfare. So I mixed in a few bits and bobs from some of the old Wood Elf kit. I took inspiration from the 6th edition army book that had a Lothern Sea Guard made of a mixture of Archers, Spearmen and Silver Helms.

Will hopefully get them painted up soon.

Let me know what you folks think.

Cheers!

I do love the red and white combo you’ve gone for. There really isn’t much better sight than ranks of painted elves!

The Sea Guard look great, and will look better with some more paint! I reckon you must be a rare breed that’s converting Elves, though there’s a few that are painting them still

Yes one of the few things I have enjoyed about using Instagram, really seen some excellent High Elf stuff, very cool scenery out there.

Thanks CB, I'm afraid I've immediately knackered the revival by pivoting to yet another project

Yes I got myself the Leagues of Votann set. And I am so glad I did. Very impressed with the kit, I did originally plan for them to be all wearing helmets but the detail on the faces is supoib. I did a few simple Dwarfy extras, just to see what they would look like. Including a new creation "the brew-kyn" to complement the Ironkin. More on that shortly.

The painted lad is still WiP, need to touch up a few areas and think up something for the base. I had a lot of fun with the "Demiurg" face. I wanted them to look as alien as possible to make it match up with the old lore.

Let me know what you folks think.

Cheers.

Ooh I wondered when we’d start seeing space dwarfs on dakka. The red and orange look cool on them. I’m intrigued to see what the brew-kyn turn out to be

Guardling wrote:Haha love the brew-kyn, all they need now is a teaspoon and a tin mug...

Cheers both! My thoughts for the Brewkyn is that they function much as Ironkyn do. Except in my custom league (whatever I end up naming it ) I see them as older generational Ironkyn. That have in a way become Ancestor-like and they carry out more important functions within the Hold. I thought it would be an interesting way to create a slightly more spiritual aspect to the Ironkyn. Perhaps they don't necessarily see themselves that way, but maybe other Kyn do and revere them for the age and closeness to the ancestors.

That's the gist anyway. I'll put more of it down sometime soon.

In terms of painting updates, I based my test model and touched up the face and the gun. Originally I planned on some Dwarf runic patterns on the bolter but it looked a little naff so I went for hazard stripes instead. I think I need to touch them up, make the black lines a little thicker.

The base is about 90% finished, I might add a bit of snow as well.

Not pictured I have basecoated another four and done the basic washes and started the highlights.

Cheers for now.

Cheers me ph34rs!

I've seen people use those wee tufts before online and I really like the look and I'd been wanting to try it out for a while. I think I will do so with my Eldar as well when I eventually get back round to them. I popped down to my FLGS on a whim and there was a couple of packs. By the way if anyone is interested in Fantasy minis I humbly suggest you check out their miniature range here . Lovely comic characters, very Pratchett esque.

Anyways on with the show..

I was away on holiday for a few days so I've only got the next 5 painted. Still bumbling along figuring out the lore but when I have a bit of brain time to spare I'll actually focus on that.

Trying my damnedest to take better photos, at some point I'll bite the bullet and just buy a proper camera instead of using my phone. I'm rather happy with the stubble effect I got on the otherwise baldie lad with the HYLas rifle. I decided against continuing the hazard stripes on their bolters but I figured I'd keep what I already did. You can see the Brewkyn a little better now and I'll do a side by side with his Iron cousin when I paint them up.

As I was taking the photos, my cat came to sniff out what I was up to. So here is Misty doing her best Medieval cat painting impersonation.

Cheers for now.

Quick update today as I had some time spare.

Two more kyn finished, leaving three left in this squad and on to building the next batch.

As with all new schemes it takes a little while to get the rhythm of painting down but I sped along with this pair.

Cheers for now.

I do have some plans still for my admech bubbling around in the back of my brain.

In the mean time here's more Votann.

I can't imagine Dwarven medics using anything other than fine ale to heal their wounded on the battlefield.

Went back to a few models, especially the Brewkyn and added some OSL which was good fun.

Just the Thegn left and then on to the next.

Thanks a lot mate, really appreciate it.

Bit of a proper update: the first squad is finished and I came up with a name! (I hate doing that, takes me ages on any RPG game, I can get stuck thinking up a name for hours )

Welcome to the stage - The Norhymbre Cooperative. Hailing from their hold of Yvearik on the planet of Iscagimm. A small league known for it's extremely devoted ancestral worship as well as the extreme heat of their Hearthforge. They have begun to vigorously expand outwards into new space since the Rift opened. More to claim for the Cooperative!

Happy to get the Thegn done, had them basecoated for a while but haven't had much time spare for a few days. I might build one of the Pioneers next, rather than painting another squad. But we shall see what happens.

Cracking work getting the first squad done! They look spot on, especially the added OSL. The Einhyr looks amazing with the WHFB dwarf head, well worth the effort to carve down. One tool I’ve recently been playing with is a jewellers saw, makes cutting up lead much easier and plastic is a doddle.

Cheers everyone, appreciate it. Good idea Gobert, I do have a jewellers saw somewhere in my toolbox. Wish I had the idea at the time!

Thanks DoctorDanny! Unfortunately, resistance is futile! So if you do start a Fantasy army, I'd be dead keen to see it!

I've almost finished building everything in the box now, with just the Kahl to go. I'm leaving that for a little while while my brain ticks over and I consider what kind of converting I want to do.

For now here's some photos of my Hernkyn Pioneers.

Nice pieces- the bases are particularly striking. The colors work given the armor schemes and the general 'unearthly' figures.

Cheers Meer_Cat! Given that the Votann inhabit the galactic core, I wanted the bases to look clearly unnatural and a little unusual. Hence the blue rock and the neon grass. For the character bases I plan some more whackier bits and bobs.

So another update here for you all. Feeling a lot more motivated which is great. It sucks when poor mental health impacts your hobby. But my brain has refilled with a touch of vim and I seem to contain more vigour of late. So on with the show

I had a fun time picking through some ideas for the banner. In the end I went for some classic Dwarf designs. The forge under the mountains represents the Hearth of the Norhymbre Cooperative that they hold so dear to their hearts.

Banner looks great. Simple designs like that work really well I reckon. Very dorfy. Every squad should have a banner. Unless they are a stealth squad. Or jump packs. Think it was Nigel Stillman who said 'raise the banner first, and you can raise the regiment around it' . Glad you're feeling better and lookin forward to seeing more.

Thanks PaddyMick! I really appreciate it. I'm always an advocate of Stillman, his narrative focus is what I aspire to when creating an army.

So been focused on the Einhyr Champion and I'm pretty pleased with the result. I think a couple of areas to touch up here and there but that's the gist.
