Currently I am doing a lot of competitive 40k playing - entering tournaments etc. - with my Uber-Council Eldar list - and doing fairly well for myself.
I did start the hobby in Warhammer Fantasy - but devoted my limited time, as a GCSE student, to 40k - after all - 40k involves (generally) painting and modelling less models.
However, some time I would like to return to Fantasy - and as a reasonably competitive player.
To the main point of my post:
Please update me on the top 5 armies in Fantasy at the moment - I've heard that Daemons, and perhaps Vampire Counts, are way out in front at the moment...
Mention the general composition of those 5 armies - must take units / characters, if you will...
Regards, Dark Fire

Does everybody else kind of agree with this? Why aren't the new Chaos up there... Why are Dark Elves above Daemons (although I realise this may not be in order of power) - please expand.
What are the general builds of these armies' competitive lists? Is it say, MSU for High Elves?
Thank you for the quick responses.

In order it is probably:
1 Daemons
2 Vampires
3 Dark elves
4/5 High elves and lizards
I honestly am not sure which is better between lizzies and HE, so I put them as a tie.
The daemons will win games if they just bring a greater daemon and lots of flesh hounds. They also have a variant that specializes in leadership nuking.
VC counter this with KP denial raise hordes, or deathstar units. The regen banner is a pain to handle.
Dark elves dart around blasting everything with shooting and magic, then assault the remnants. Black guard and hydras are stand out units for their cost.
HE usually use multiple small elites, with light shooting support, and a heavy magic phase. They have a double dragon variant that does ok too.
Lizards are pretty balanced in all phases, but they have a very strong magic phase. Engine of the Gods is very nasty.
The new chaos would like to be good, but the book is full of powerful units at too high point cost. The best I've seen is the spam knights and lore of tzeetch #6 spell.

I'd rate Empire higher than High Elves, but that's just me.

2012- stopped caring
Nova Open 2011- Orks 8th Seed---(I see a trend)
Adepticon 2011- Mike H. Orks 8th Seed (This was the WTF list of the Final 16)
Adepticon 2011- Combat Patrol Best General |

Empire has the double steam tank war altar list. Though incredibly cheesy, I wouldn't rate it as high as the elves. The rest of the empire list, minus the excellent cannons, is way too average.

IMO: 1.) Daemons (many reasons) 2.)lizard men (solely with EOTG spam, stegs are good too) 4.)VC (magic packs a punch, so does the regenerate banner and grave guard are good as well. Zombies are like running water in a VC army). 3.)Dark elves (lots of magic items that are severely underpriced. Hydra undercosted.) 5) Dwarfs (solely because thorek and his anvil of doom are fun and awesome.)

I think the only reason VC and DE rank highly are because VC beats Demons and DE beats VC and occasionally can beat Demons.
But if you want the real answer of what is THE MOST powerful army it's Demons. Nothing but demons.

Well Most of the 6th edition books suck too. The 7th edition books are much more effective, and have less bad units and items. (and enough good units/items that you don't need to take bad ones) Some people would call It power creep, I call it getting rid of stuff people don't like and don't take. Other than the horrible decisions made in the daemons book, none of the new books are over powered. There are certain things in them that people can complain about, but then cheese and whiners are part of the game. If people want to play balance army versus balanced army, then they should just have empire vs empire all the time.

Thank you all for your responses - that gave me a quick update - looking at the Daemon codex it seems it may have some severe balance issues...
I thikn I'll probably go for either High or Dark Elves - simply because I like fast armies... and I'm not really a fan of the undead.
To be honest the relatively low model count helps as well - relates more to 40k, and quicker to paint/ spend more time giving a better paint job - which is key for somebody doing A-Levels next year...
