I know I've been asking a ton of questions on here lately, but they keep cropping up so why not eh?
Whilst I don't have a small house I do have a family and its not practical for me to keep half painted models on the table and boxes of unpainted stuff lying around. I have an old Games Workshop case without the foam with all my paints and brushes chucked in and now I am modelling the Realm of Battle table I have spray cans and flock everywhere. Not to mention all the rule books and everything else.
I'm sure I can get some storage sorted, but I wondered how others do it without interfering with the family home or flat mates, but also making it easy and hassle free to get on with your painting hobby.
I'd love some way of keeping my current projects and paints all to hand, but easy enough to stow away.
Cheers

I have used a painting cart with a tray to real good effect. Current painting projects and painting supplies go in the cart (several shelves are ideal). Tray sits ontop with current project. Casters. Wheels into closet/gameroom/wherever the sprogs cannot get to the sharp bits and toyz. This was the wifes suggestion so I could have my mess, but could wheel it out and spend time painting with the family while she's reading or the kids are watching Bob the Builder. Not really family time, but better than everyone being at odd ends of the house.
Now I just have a game room.

I bought a set of KR Multicases. They got a bunch of foam trays inside a sturdy cardboard case. Means I keep my armies in there out of sight, and when I need to play/paint I take a case out.
Also a great one I find is beds with storage space underneath them. All my 40k stuff is under a bed - and no one bothers them.

Yeah, the key for the set up I had was that it rolled, and easily. But if you had a stack of rubbermaid, that would work too. I dunno about britain, but in the us we can get these rubbermaid containers that slide under the bed, various footprint sizes. These would work well. Most of the ones I have are about 2'x3', maybe 8 inches thick with the lid. that's a lot of surface area. stack up a few of those, breakfast-in-bed tray on top, good to go.

Have a table in my office. Models/game books go in a closed bookshelf. Not to be confused with the other 10 bookshelves I have in there.
except for tanks... they go on top of my desk.
My wife rearely complains about the set up I have.

You can include a solarium/breakfast nook to justify it to your wife, while also including a gaming room with a big table, shelving all around for model storage, track lighting focusing on the table, a separate painting station, a vent for when you need to spray models in the winter, etc.

I have a 'Geek Room' with all my computer game, roleplaying and Warhammer stuff. Because there's nothing quite as soul crushing as finishing a model, putting it down, and hearing the horrible smashing sound as Forge World Resin hits the floor because the one year old child that grabbed it dropped it.
I also have a big board set up in the basement, so we can play bigger games over a day or two and not get in peoples way.

Um. I have a desk under my single-bunk bed that literally has piles of assembly instructions, paper towel, and bags full of natural basing materials. I erm... keep my sprues in their boxes which are on the floor usually... my TV is precariously perched on a wooden set of drawers with the bottom one missing... my walls are purple, and my curtains are pink with flowers on them. I hate moving rooms.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made. |

But seriously, I keep various projects I'm working on in their own plastic storage boxes so I won't lose their parts. I try to keep them sorted by stage of work. I have primed miniatures and things in one box, pieces that need to be pinned, I have in another box, pieces that need finishing touches go in another box.
Craft stores have gobs of project totes that are useful, if you can find them that aren't pink and flowery..but if you put enough Imperial Eagles and Skulls on it, no one will notice.

i store my painting stuff in a storage container i picked up at a craft store, and my models are partially in a box with dividers in it for those i don't need to transport, and the army on the move is stored in a container with a handle i picked up at walmart- i used some heavy duty foam scrap i found near a construction site to build trays that layer in decently enough for the money i put into it

I have been using cabinents for many years now. This is my most recent upgrade, runs about 300 dollars and comes bare wood so you can finish it to your (or your wife's/GF's liking) . This one is a computer armoire(sp?)
Work and keep it as messy as you want, then it closes up nicely so your mess is hidden. Keeps everyone happy. Also if you need to it would be fairly easy to add a lock or latch to keep the little ones out.
Also got a closet in the garage
Makes it so much easier to sneek in new stuff if needed

That is FARRRRRR to organized. And you call yourself a gamer. I bet you shower, too...
That computer armoire is really, really slick. Aside from storage space, it has everything. That's a damned good find and well worth the $300 price tag if you don't have the dedicated space for your hobbying needs.

The armoire type of furniture is pretty cool. I like how it appears to hold so much. If you can't have your own man cave, that looks pretty good.

No earth shattering, thought provoking quote. I'm just someone who was introduced to 40K in the late 80's and it's become a lifelong hobby. |
