Hey all. New player looking to settle on an army. I've played a few demo games with different armies. And am finally trying to settle on one to play. Do to the limited amount of games i've played as well as the limited amount of armies i've used I simply havne't been able to find the right one yet.

Primary) Movement, CC, Characters
Secondary) Magic Defense,
Third) Low model count, high command

I think that the WE wardancers are a great example of what i'm expecting my army to perform like. I understand that no ones core units are going to perform like the wardancers will but I think it does its job of explaining how it fills the above areas of importance. On the note of my armies magic. I don't really care if its a slow army with magic that makes it fast (thus giving it a strong movement or if the army has no magic at all). I do care about stopping my opponent from ripping apart my lines with spells that I can't do anything about.

I DO NOT like the WoC (not sure why but besides tzeentch thier models just don't do it for me), Empire (boring lore), or Dwarfs (i have an unnatrual hatred for these guys). My friend is picking up the lizardman army so i'd like to avoid them since we will primarily be playing against each other.

What do you guys think? I've been told the army that appelas to me most (ogre kings) is absolutely terribly and that BOC may be loosing one of my favorite models in thier line (dragon ogre shaggoth).

Any of the elves will fit your criteria.

Hm... All right, radical suggestion.

Warriors of Chaos, but with a twist - Monsters of Chaos.

Take Troll King Throgg, which will allow you to make an army out of Chaos Ogres, Dragon Ogres, and even the Dragon Ogre Shaggoth that you'd like. This gives you an extremely swift-moving army, with a very low model count, and a hard-hitting close-combat element.

Failing that, any of the three Elves will fit your criteria.

Once again, Elves,

Chaos Monsters

Ogres aren't terrible. Just take 2 Butchers and a Bruiser at 1,500 points for low model count. Cast Trollguts over and over. Laugh as your opponent struggles to kill your regenerating Ogres.

Some people play to win, some people play for fun. Me? I play to kill toy soldiers.

Interesting. No one has proposed Chaos Monsters. I"ll have to read that book now.

Ogre's like i said are my favorite fluff wise etc its nice to hear encouraging words towards them.

Elves I'm still gonna have to try out and make em work for me. So far I haven't fought an army with good saves which I think will really hurt them since they have generically low saves. WE are entertaining so far. I haven't tried HE or DE yet.

Thanks for the advice guy this is easily becoming my favorite forum.

I really wouldn't start ogres if i were you they are really underpowered and have a steep learning curve. VC has great movement CC and characters as well as magic defense but can have a pretty high model count. TK has cool units like chariot units and movement spells but are also pretty hard for beginners. BOC also really suck, don't even look at the book.

Ogres aren't underpowered.

Like I said, Butcher Spam can prove effective.

VC has waaaay too many models for what he wants.

Go for Ogres, they're quite a fine army in the right hands

I started to play Ogres last year. B/C low model count... big mistake. They are slow Ws3 but 3 w and T4. But... they are boring to play. fantasy is all about moving units and planning charges/flee bait etc.

Only time i had a blast with ogres is making an entire beastmen army flee off the table with butchers spell. Forced them to make a Ld test and chain reaction of panic failed test .

Also if you have low body count easier for the opponent to flank you. Id proxy an army b4 you spend couple of hundred bucks remember prices are going up in June :(.

my .02 cents

I'd really like to know how you were playing them because ogres are fast (mv 6) and they are all about setting up charges and fleeing and baiting...

I play Ok and I use 3 butchers. I win most of my games but it does not change the fact that they are inherently underpowered compared to many of the other armies. It can win but it requires an experienced player not someone just getting into the game.

What I like about them besides the low model count is that they take three wounds or more apiece and they can be painted up really nice. One of our better players in our group plays them and if opponents make mistakes against him he will make you pay for it. His army looks very very nice as he is one of the better painters also. Even when he is pulling them off the board. It takes some time to get used to their magic and what to defend against.

Just use empire rules for kislev if you like the models.

What about Brettonia? Fast moving, and high armor.
