Ahoy ahoy!

Some friends and I have begun to get back into 40k again, last time I played would have been approximately 4 years ago. I no longer have any of my old models etc and so am for all intents and purposes starting over from scratch, including learning the rules.

We figured for the best chances of us all actually painting our models (I'm terribly bad for buying tons of stuff and then leaving it sitting around) that we would do up groups of roughly 250 pts a month (more if we feel like it obviously).

Now, where the advice part comes in. I'm going to go for Orks as I used to like painting them more than anything else and the only other thing I really want to play would be Space Wolves. As they are getting new stuff some time in the future, I'll wait until then for getting them.

So, for the orks. What would people suggest would be a good progression of stuff to get? I'm most likely going to be painting them up as bad moon just because I like the colours (should that make any difference for rules wise - I've yet to get the codex). I recon the Assualt on Black Reach stuff is a good starting point myself, but after that am unsure. I really like the FW Ork boss on bike so will most likely want to move towards that being my HQ choice, so maybe after black reach getting some bikers to go with him when I get him would be a good idea.

So here is me, not really up to date on the rules anymore, not sure what I should be getting to make a functional and fun ork army in smallish groups of purchases/painting. Throw some advice at me!

I'm a really big fan of the Ork battle box. It's 90 dollars, but you get 20 boys, a trukk, and three warbikes. You really can't go wrong with boys, and trukks are always handy to have around. As for the warbikes, it's simple enough to convert them into a nice nob bikers unit to ride with your fancy forge world Warboss. In addition to all this, buying the box saves you a bit of cash over buying the models individually.

The Assault on Black Reach is another good buy, especially if just starting out. The 20 boys and the rulebook alone make it worth it, provided you don't already have the BBB. Also, as far as I know, it's the only way to get Deff Koptas in plastic at this time. If I were you, I'd use the nobs and the warboss for bits, but that's just because I don't personally find nobs or warbosses to be worth fielding on foot.

After that, if you want to go Kult of Speed, keep buying the battle boxes! Like I said earlier, it's a bit of a bargin, and it's really easy to find a use for all the models that come in the box.

O H I am in the Webway...

For sure AobR.

If you want a lot of bikerz, go for the Kult of Speed aka. Speed Freakz aka. Evil Sunz.

Bad moons is all about da dakka! Lots o shooty boyz lots of tankz!

The thing is, what do you want?

Goffs = Get a lots of Nobz! Cheap and spam them!

Bad Moonz = Get a lot of shooty stuff

Speed Freaks = get on bikez and in truks, cheap battlewagons with 20 boys in it works well also!

Snake Bites = Get a lot of kommandos i guess

Deathskullz = lootas galore!

If you want to run non-nob bikerz, make sure to get a lot, they are just boyz when it comes down to it. Gettings a lot of boyz is always a good starting point! With orks, you can pretty much scratch build every vehicle... its a lot of open possibilites

He who fights with monsters might take care lest he thereby become a monster and if you gaze for long into an abyss, the abyss gazes also into you

There is NO difference based on Clan from Rules perspective. Every Bad Moon Boyz is the same as a Blood Axe boy. Every Evil Sunz trukk is the same as a Goff Trukk.

However, it is super easy to decide on a clan and build an army that totally fits the fluff for that clan.

Just no "Evil Sunz vehicles move an extra 1 inch" or "Bad Moon Nobz get +1 shots per turn, Shootas = Assault 3" sorta rule ..

2+2=5 for sufficiently large values of 2.

If you're patient, you can score the Ork Battleforce on EBay for between $65-$75 with shipping (both the old and new one, old one comes with bikes, ugly bikes but cheap) I scored two New Ones and one Old One. You can also trade off your AoBR Space Marines for Orks here on DakkaDakka or even a FLGS (I've done both). Ebay is generally great for bitz of all kinds at great prices if you're patient. Boyz IMO and lots of them are a great way to start. If your friends initially have small forces as well, Big Mobz o' basic slugga/choppa Boyz will beat them senseless. Of course as they expand their models, so should you. And AoBR will give you a decent Warboss model to use until you figure out your own Warboss idea.

IMO stay away from Deff Dreds. Killa Kans are better at shooting and pretty darned cheap (game point wise). After you play more, you'll probably get your own ideas (at least I did) how to build a force to suit your tastes. Two trukks (at least, depending on your style) are probably also advisable early on, again IMO. One thing about the Orks, they're fairly versatile in Army list styles and more so than some of the other races.

Just some of my thoughts. I just started playing again after an eleven year hiatus. Hope this helps.

Wow, I wish I knew about that before I got GW Assault of Black Reach. :/ Mine only came with 20 Ork Boyz, 3 Deffkopta's, 5 Nobz, and a Warboss... and then I traded my SM side for another 20 boyz, 5 lootas, and a Big Mek wit' Shokk Attack Gun.

Thats a pretty good deal for the double ork AoBR but with them seemingly using UPS for international shipping, I am a bit concerned with the shipping costs. Any time I have looked at shipping with UPS in the past it has been crazy expensive.

The one thing I especially liked was the ability to get the bits seperately, so I could just get some Nobz Biker bodies/legs for a nobz biker unit, instead of buying a bunch of the normal ones to get a unit of nobz ones. Unfortunately they were out of stock though :(

Anyone know of any good/reliable places you can order stuff like that in Europe?
