Most people know of this, It's excellent for making battle reports.

As for playing games, the interweb makes most people TFG, so I avoid playing random games with it.

Looks a good tool for bat reps although I haven't got round to using it yet. However can't imagine using it for a game.

Because they can't. Games Workshop owns intellectual rights, this is true. However, they don't own visual rights. Anyone can make a sprite of an image and display it online. It's the same reason that they can't sue someone for making a "Tyranid" mod for DoW or a signature image w/ a picture of a Space Marine. It'd be a different story however if they made each little sprite a larger size and made them printable to make as models you can glue to paper and then glue to bases however...

Doesn't their whole legal site go into all the things you can't do (visual things being part of them - like game mods and tatoos)?

Vassal is a fine tool particularly if you are unable to regularly find proper games. You can avoid TFGs by registering on their forums and getting to know the regulars. It's a great tool for trying out armies and units.

They can't, because they have no legal standing. You are paying the Tatoo artist for their time and Skills. Because you are not selling the art or IP for profit (at least, I hope you are not >.< ) GW cannot do a damn thing.

Online games tend to be insane powerbuilds from what I've seen. While that's fun to do, if you're trying to test out something with the figs you have or how it would do in the real world, it's not so great. Plus you have the great players who drop as soon as they start to lose. I played a guy running loota/kan spam and he dropped after I killed all his kans on turn 2. It was far from over at that point, but anyway.

The new build also has no predefined maps so setting up a game takes a LONG time right now.

Couldn't GW sue the Tattoo artist for making money off of their intellectual property?

No. He is protected under the Fair Use laws. You are not paying him for GW's IP, you are paying him for his skills and Time.

Hooray!
Also: It doesn't make much of any kind of sense for GW to not want you to use their images in stuff like Tattoos and whatnot. You'd be a walking advertisement!

Vassal is ok for testing new army lists out before forking over lots of cash but with 5th it doesn't really simulate the true line of sight well since it is only 2d.

Well, considering you used True Line of Sight (with a few abstractions) for 3rd and 4th as well....

It's also easy enough to know what the models look like and "mount" them at their particular normal height. Granted w/ is an issue, but most people I see doing this have a general knowledge of the models size.

I should do this and try to play w/ it at a true GW store.

I find Vassal fun though its much better for setting up games between friends you don't see all that often and want a game from. Random players will ocassionaly be a pain.

Vassal is a good way to try out units and builds in a psuedo-40k environment. 3d converted to 2d is an issue. Also, there does seem to be a larger concentration of TFG's.

Last week, I had a guy quit on me during the first half of turn one. After I told him that I reserved everything, he quit. On top of that, he insulted me right before he closed the window.

Thats why you need to arrange matched between people you know, rather than random matches.

I've been meaning to learn how to use the damn thing for a while, so if anyone feels like playing a few demo games with me, PM me and we can try and set some stuff up.
