I'm no marine expert, but i'd think Smite and gate of Infinity. Smite is a absurdly powerful shooting assault attack, and gate of infinity lets you move around 28 inches a turn; 34 with assault distance.

Since GoI counts as deep striking, you cannot assault on the turn that you use it.

For a CC libby, I think that Might, and The Quickening are both good, but the super-important one is Null Zone, as many players are reliant on invulnerable saves to protect their dedicated CC units nowadays.

May be wrong but don't think you can assualt after gate of infinity as it counts as deep striking. (damn it ninja'd)

Force Dome (inv saves for all!) and another maybe avenger (AP3 template) or the initiative raising one?

What do you mean by "best"? Every ability has a use, it just depends on what kind of use you're looking for.

Things I've gotten other players to admit...

Urk >.<.. Librarians are not designed for CC... get a chaplain with jump pack or terminator armour. Librarians = sternguard gating with null zone or some other utility.

Nuclear: Properly pronounced new-clear, not new-cue-lir. There is no 'u' between the c and l, so stop saying it because it just makes you sound like a dumbass. This includes nucleolus, and all other derivatives of the word.

A space marine librarian in term armour w/ a stormshield and Might of Ancients is not bad but its also not that great.

Here is the thing with Combat Librarians ; you don't want to use your two powers ; you want to use Might of Ancients so you can get that wound and then use their force kill to cause instant death.

Overall its just not a good combat character.

If I lose it is because I had bad luck, if you win it is because you cheated.

That made me Chuckle. There is nothing worth using the Force Weapon on anymore. Everyone uses special characters and half those have Eternal Warrior, and those that don't will be kept away from anything that can cause instant death.

Force Weapons are useless and have been for a while

Basically, when I make an army, I make it with a theme. My current project is a true scale Spartan (300 movie) army. (See my other post for many pics). So, with the Spartans, they did not like the priests, so chaplains were eliminated from the theme...The Librarian (like an elder with scrolls and wisdom) would be more Spartan like for this army. Most of my army will come in by drop pods and teleport. It is very very close combat geared. So, with that being said, I wanted a Liby that could either effective at CC or at least help others in CC.

A Librarian is a support character, not a cc monster.
I'd give him terminator armor and storm shield for protection.
Nullzone is a must-have in a tournament setting. The 2nd power is personal preference.

Why chooose force dome? Termie armor comes with a 5+ invuln. Force dome's only useful for protecting a big group of sterngaurd, since they have no invuln of their own

Automatically Appended Next Post:
and regarding the OP:

I think these are the best spells for a libby, although most of them don't lend themselves to a CC Lib.
GoI is great for removing oneself from CC to set the enemy up for shooting(and rapid-firing away if you deep-strike back in aggressively, or with a locator beacon)

Smite/Avenger are both good spells, and accomplish similar goals, Smite being better against Term. armor, Avenger being better against most everything else. I personally prefer Avenger, YMMV.

Null Zone is strong against uber CC units, so long as you're able to defeat their armor as well. Or Daeomons

Force Dome is a defensive spell and is ok for a big, expensive unit with no invulnerable save of their own(sterngaurd)

Might of the Ancients is almost required for a CC heavy Librarian, if you REALLY want one, I'd suggest might and null zone. You'll also have to pay 50 points more for epistolary to make that build truly effective, which I think is a waste of points. A CC squad would be much better suited being led by a captain/CM, Pedro, Vulkan, Chaplain Cassius, or MAYBE Sicarius. A Librarian is much better suited supporting large units of rapid-fire troops IMO

The Spartans were actually very religious. Like all Greeks.

300 is a movie. Not a documentary.

That having been said...good luck on the army dude.

Librarian with Term Armor - Storm Shield - Null Zone and Avenger / Thats the build I shove in a LRC with my Assault Terminators. I save the Chaplain for my Assault Squad.

Anything else and its kind of a weak HQ choice imo. Unless you pack him with Stern and give him Gate of course as others have suggested.

Avenger is a bad choice for a Gate librarian because you have to get really close to the target to get a good hit from the template. Getting close means you run the very real risk of having not only getting a guy eaten in the warp but also having to eat a deep strike mishap.

I've been doing a term librarian with Gate and Vortex with a squad of TH/SS terms. Gate them in, vortex away, and let the SS's eat the incoming fire. Next turn gate out, let the terms charge and go pick up a scoring squad to come claim that objective for the turn after.

If you don't bring Null Zone on a CC libby you're doing it wrong. Why try to make a lackluster CC character good, when instead he can be making the guys around him good?
