I've seen many a thread and started one or two about using old models and how to do so. I have quite a few myself, some dating back to the RT days. Well, in painting my mixed old model and new model Ork army I realized what a sick advantage I have using the older models.

Why?

Becuase size matters.

I just finished painting a new trukkk and got out one of my old Gorka-Morka trukks and couldn't help but see how ridiculously smaller the GM truck is! I mean, it's like half the size. With such a small model I can much more easily hide it behind terrain, other vehicles, ect..

Boyz are the same deal. The old RT orks are a full head shorter than the new orks and about 2/3 as wide. Not only that they don't have flailing arms, their weapons are largely tucked against their scrawney body. Again, much easier to hide behind terrain and other units.

Has anyone else noticed/experienced this? I mean, the advantage of older models?

You don't even have to go that far back. Look at the new Ork Truck verses the last one.

I find with the exception of some old vehicles, mostly the in the cases of the old resin cast battlewagons, it doesn't effect the game very much.
Even the old screamer-killer as compared to the new carnifex.

And nothing is stopping you from scratchbuilding models that are even smaller. As Yak is always quick to remind everyone, you can use modelling to your advantage. Old or new - it doesn't make any sense.

I at least try to use mixed squads. I have converted CSM bikes with bloodletters as Bloodcrushers, but I include one "real" Bloodcrushers with them for comparison and I give people some gray area on line of sight. I also use two old Obliterators and one new one. I've seen people use older ones though.

The 40k ruleset is not so finely balanced that you're going to break the game with undersized models.

On the infantry its pretty inconsequential, but you can always scenery up the bases for added height. And you can always had some big camperbacks to the old trucks too .

The rules:
1) Style over Substance.
2) Attitude is Everything.
3) Always take it to the Edge.
4) Break the Rules.

I too have some Orks from one of the first boxed complete games and they are smaller then the new black reach set. Terminators are larger then my old lead ones and the bikes are alot bigger too.

Another example of why TLoS isn't quite the wonderful rule GW think it is.

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

I know exactly what you mean! Take a look at the old biovores vs. new ones... With the old ones they can be completely hidden behind a hill or ruin. And I mean completely hidden. The 'barrel' on the new ones is almost a full inch taller, making it impossible to hide. Because everyone knows my biovores take out at least 1 AV13 tank per game they end up taking a lot of fire. If I was cheap and dastardly I'd just take 3 old ones and lean them forward a little to make them shorter than space marine scouts. I don't, but I can't help but notice the massive difference.

Tired of reading new rulebooks... Just wanting to play.

I've fielded modified Space Hulk terminators in a CSM army. The models aren't too bad if you take the small base and just glue that onto one of the medium bases.

For the daemon models, comparing the old Juggernaught models to the current bloodcrushers, the three versions of the fiends of slaanesh, or the three versions of the beast of nurgle really looks funny. The amount of metal in each of the figures has easily doubled if not quadrupled in some cases, and the 1st edition fiend looks like some sort of baby fiend next to the current version.

When the rules for the deflier came out (before the mode) I made the tiny model of it. About 3 inc square and about 2.5 inch high. As you can imagine. He was hard to find.

I've got a bunch of Space Hulk grots, and they tower over new grots, even taller than AoBR boyz!
