After looking at Forgeworlds website I have thought of trying the Elysians. I've never tried Warhammer before and have joined to get some tips. From lurking the forums the last few days I've got a general idea of the Imperial Guard. One, do forgeworld models use different rules then standard Games Workshop Minis? Two, how effective would they be compared to standard Cadians? Three, the color scheme I was thinking of is black on the armor and dark brown on the "cloth" parts; but is this a fluffy, and more importently, a aestetically pleasing colour scheme? Four, I wanted a semi-high-tec look, but it seems drop trooper packs come with grenade luanchers, while i would prfer plasma guns in them. Lastly and least, what kind of cost should I expect, seeing as I like the most expensive sub-army out of the most expensive army to begin with?

Four scholars at Oxford were making their way down the street, and happened to see a group of ladies of the evening. “What’s this?” said the first. “A jam of tarts?” “Nay,” said the second, “an essay of Trollope’s.” “Rather, a flourish of strumpets,” advanced the third. “No, gentlemen,” concluded the last. “Here we have an anthology of pros.”

1) They can, if you use their "Imperial Armor" books, but you can use Standard Codex rules for them as well.

2) No different, if you go for the same Codex. Same rules, different look. If you go IA rules, I have no idea.

3) Sounds good. Look on the FW website under the Elysians, they have more pics with color schemes. Also, in the IA with Elysians (can't remember which one), they should have a ton of info on them.

4) This is why they sell weapon packs and other stuff beyond just squads of guys. If you do buy them, get the Grav Chutes, they look awesome.

5) It depends on what you are building. If you use the basic Codex and buy your Valks from your FLGS for a good price (since I know they use those), you might not do too badly. For me, I was buying 40 guys, 2 Command Squads and a ton of weapon packs for like ~$700. FW is expensive. Very, very expensive.

Also they are resin. And forge world is lazy. So the models can be warped. Brother Argos thread/blog showed some warped stuff. I never bought forgeworld so just letting ya know. You can fix it with a hairdryer or whatever or get it replaced.

Bro Argos thread:

Go back a few pages and you'l see some of the warping he experinced.

How many Guardsmen do I need? I was going for a balance of decent size and carryability. And is there any diffference between GW Or FW Valkeries? (thanks for the info )

1. There are three different rules options for Elysians. The Standard army list in IA 3, The Veteran army list in IA 4, and The new IG codex.

2. The IA lists will be harder to use. They were written for 4th ed. and not everything translate into 5th. But if you want them to be able to deepstrike without Valkyries than use one of the IA lists. The new codex also has many more options than either of the IA lists.

3. Color schemes are completely up to you. A test model would be the best way to determine if you like the colors you have chosen. Don't use an Elysian, they are too expensive for that.

4. The Elysians have a weapon upgrade pack. It is not too bad changing the weapons.

5. My Death Korp army was over a $1000 before I stopped and I hadn't finished it for 4th ed. An army based around Veterans would be more affordable, but harder to use.

Depends on which options you take. It is possible to take an all Veteran force with the current codex. The FW (Resin) Valkyrie will most likely be discontinued like the previous items GW turned into plastic.

Since I'm probibly going to buy the squads the equipment packs (like the look), but no gravchutes (Since they will be Valkerieborn) ; the average squad cost should be 50 each I think. If I use the new codex rules and go primarily melta-gun vets in anti-infantry/horde Valkeies; how many of these 50 dollar squads should I get? I don't have the rules, so are vet squads the same size or what?
And are the drop sentinels a good idea, considering they compete with Valkeries and I will have some Valks? (like the look of sentinels)
Do you have any links of more pictures besides the ones right there at FW? Maybe a Elysian Drop Troops desktop wallpaper if you know any.
Thanks for all the help so far too.

You can't use drop sentinels if you take the reg IG list. Also, you wouldnt want to; you need to save your FA slots for more valks.

If you go heavy airborne, you are probably looking at around 4-6 squads of regular guys filling as many valks, with command squads and whatever you feel like bringing along.

Well, the Grav Chutes are used when deploying from Valkyries as well, you know. Hence the "Grav Chute Insertion" thing. I like the Chutes over no Chutes, as for look. Take a look at SgtBilko's or my own lists for AirCav, if you are interested for list ideas that would suit Elysians (was what I was going to get, but I prefer Renegades).

While I've never tried warhammer before, I know some armys have nuances with painting. The Space Marines have some to do with kneepads I think. Do the Elysians or even the Imperial Guard in general have any nuances, like which shoulder to put a number on for example?
I can't seem to find any Elysian desktop wallpapers, in fact there aren't all that many Imperial Guard wallpapers. I just think Elysians would look good in a background. Hopefully you all know of some.
Still not sure if the grav-chutes would look good, there aren't as many pictures with them on. Even when they are on, it's usually from the front. Maybe you know some links to help?

I would really make sure you know what you're getting in to starting with a nearly pure resin army for your first Warhammer army. If you have other modeling experience with different miniature companies then you might already know what to expect, but if not make sure you really read up on working with resin before taking the dive into an expensive FW army. I've been working with miniatures for 12+ years and my nearly all resin Death Guard army still caused me some problems and I am very familiar with advanced modeling techniques, so just make sure and do your research.

The paint scheme sounds ok, but I think a black armor and dark green cloth would look good too. Although, color scheme are very dependent on personal preference, so just go with what you like. It's your army after all!

Just go with GW Valks over FW ones. There is no difference other than you will pay far less for GW ones and they will be much easier to assemble. Frankly, I can't think of a single good reason to go with the FW version.

Lastly, pick up the rulebook and the IG codex and read them and get an idea for how the game plays and what you want in your army. Write up a list at your desired point level and post it for feedback. After you know exactly what you will need for your army then buy stuff. I can't stress how much money you will save in the long run with a solid plan for what you need rather than buying what looks cool but will never use.

You can never beat your first time. The second generation is shinier, stronger, faster and superior in every regard save one, and it's an unfair criticism to level, but it simply can't be as original. - Andy Chambers, on the evolution of Games Workshop games

With the valkeries, will painting the inside before putting it together affect the glue. I mean does glue work on two already painted surfaces.
What are some good ways to transport this army. I've seen different brands of bags/foam but I don't know which is best.
What are the best piants, washes, glues, and etc.

battlefoam.com has some excellent carrying bags, but in all honesty, they are luxury items. Careful packing in most boxes works fine for large models, as long as you don't mind walking back to your car to get another armload, I have been doing that for years and haven't had a model broken. Your miniatures however will need a case, so you may want to buy a GW one (both the large and small cases work great), but if you have the cash and want to bling, your best bet is Battlefoam, but again, I stress that they are very expensive and are not required!

As for painting and gluing, yes. Paint on the adhering surface will make for a weaker bond, especially if you are using super glue. The easiest thing is to just scrape off any paint that gets where you are gluing, rather than assembling the model then trying to paint the details.

I have always used the GW paints and washes, but their glue is just an out right rip off. Go with Crazy Glue for your super glue (try and get the kind with the brush), and Testore's plastic glue (it is usually in a red tube, or better yet, a weird black bottle with long nozzle and red tags).

Just because anyone agrees with anyone, doesn't mean they are correct. Beware the thin line between what is "Correct" and what is "Popular."

1) Yes I think so
2)I think they are the same
3)You should probably do more of a dark grey cloth, just my preference.
4)I don't understand the question, but (if i understand correctly) you can probably get packs of plasma guns on E-Bay for like 3 bucks
5)probably a lot, knowing forgeworld.

Thanks. Thats all the modeling info I need for now.
But pictures-wise, I'm guessing there aren't all that many Elysian desktop wallpapers. I was thinking their signiture helmet would make for good artwork.
