Hey there all

I was just wondering why it's essential to have a KFF Mek in a KoS army, i'm not questioning the tactic but i would someone to explain why? IMO it's kind of bad to have your vehicles group up together with 6" of the KFF even if it does only have to be a fraction of the model.

I just can't see the viability of it, can someone give there reasons why they take one or experiences good or bad they've had with a KFF?

thanks

The 4+ obscured save that all of those bunched up vehicles benefit from is the reason you want a KFF mek in a KOS army.

The eye of terror.

Turn 1: drive straight at the enemy real fast.

Enemy turn 1: cry in frustration as you cannot kill all of those vehicles with 4+ cover.

Turn 2: drive straight at enemy, disembark, waaagh, win.

Enemy turn 2: pack up army, cry, go home.

Surely this ends VERY VERY VERY badly if you run into some guy with cover-denying weapons (well-deployed hellhound, etc)?

Correct me if i'm wrong, by all means, not seen a KoS army yet.

I collect:
Guard - 2k of mostly infantry
DA - 2k of deathwing, 2k of other bits (no vehicles)
Sisters - mostly converted/proxy because I'm waiting for therange to go plastic.
Tau - 2k with no riptides because I can.

Well, the trick is to cover the trukks with battlewagons. A bright lance, for example, has a roughly 6% chance to destroy a battlewagon with KFF protection.

Well in my current list i only have 4 trukks, which i see as a decent amount in a 1500pt list, but that 4+ cover save is only a 50% chance of ignoring the actual shot, my friend has
9 Lascannons, 2 heavy weapon teams and 1 Vendetta, these are the sort of things i'm afraid because because on average 1 of those lascannons will do something to vehicle.

Also having your vehicles grouped up allows any fast vehicle such as the vendetta to start hitting you from the side, the KFF is 6" area of effect meaning you can't break off safely from the main group that's covered by the KFF, which you would need to if it's and objective based game. But the alternative HQ i would choose would be a Warphead Weirdboy, But another fear with that is getting a Waaagh! while still in trucks etc.

I also have 1 BW but that 1 BW can't cover all the trukks.

It is not auto-win but it does negate the save.

Why can't one BW cover all the trukks?

You put the mek in the BW. You measure the KFF distance from the hull of the battlewagon. IMO get another battlewagon too, the more the better.

But still it means grouping your trukks behind the BW, which then raises the problem that your Trukks move faster than the BW.

Behind, to the side, in front, whatever. Put dangerous enough stuff in your BWs and your opponent will have to make a really tough decision: the lightly armored trukks, or the high-priority, but tough BWs.

As guard, still not a tough choice, i can shoot both... but I do see the point. Certainly better than being spread out, at least, unless the other guy has nothing but template weapons

most of the time blast templates will be wasted on a group of vehicles. unless the hole in the center of the blast template is on a vehilcle they take a half strength hit on front armor (they work better for infantry thats why with new guard you see more mech armys). and the KFF works better than you think, first scatter roll and to pen roll then 50% chance of negation. try running 2 KFF Big Meks and split your vehicle groups in two
