Hey everyone,

Just a quick question : How long do you find it generally takes to play a full game?

The reason I ask is that my fiancee and I have been learning to play, and have two 1500pt armies (marines and orks). She enjoys it, but finds the length of the game offputting. Obviously I want to keep her interested, so I want to figure out a way to pare down the game length. I woudl rather play with 1500pt or so games since they are more tactically interesting to me, but the last time we played it took about 5 hours to finish! Is this typical? I know we will speed up as we learn the rules and such, and I could always play with less pts for a shorter game or even call a hard stop time.

So how long do you all find it takes to complete games at these point levels?

750pts?

1000pts?

1500pts?

1750pts?

2000+pts?

Thanks for the feedback!

Cheers!

Well your learning to play, so the long games at this point range aren't that worrying, after a while you'll both start remembering things and it quickens up. An idea might be to play say a set number of turns or time, then come back next night, it gives you something tot alk and think about the next day i suppse and gives that ecited feeling about what you've planned to do when ti restarts.

for 1750 i'd assume 3 hours for myself give or take a bit of time with chatting and such.

Usually if i'm playing with my friend, we're both quite experienced and games just generally go well.

750-1 hour
1000-1 hour 30mins
1500-2 hours
1750-2 hours 30mins
2000-3 hours

That doesn't include set up time for the boards and setting out terrain, but that's on average because sometimes games end turn 7 or turn 5

1850 - 2000 points, 2 1/2 hours
1500 - 1750, 2 hours
under 1500 1 1/2 hours or less

Obviously, this can change based on oponent and scenario. I've finished 2000 point games in under an hour and had 1500 point games drag out for over 3 hours.

3 hours above 1850 usually. It's not me slowing it down most of the time though.

Feel free to play on a smaller board and play to turn 4 until you learn better. It'll certainly speeds things up as you won't have to measure as much and things will get squashed quicker.

I guess I'm the odd one on this one. Usually at 750 or 1k takes an hour and a half (mainly because at this level it's usually my girlfriend & I). At 1500 it's usually two and a half because I play with veterans at that level. However, at anything above 2000 it's usually at least 5 hours--usually because it's an apoc or team game.

Almost never play below 1500 so:

1500- 2 hours

1750-1850- 2 and 1/2 hours

2000 Usually 2 1/2 but have had them go over 3

My experience is that 1k takes about or under takes about an hour. 1250 is another half hour. 1500s spring up to 2 and a half hours and I very rarely get to play above that.

The group I'm with plays 2000pt games in under 2.5 hours.
This even allows for trips to the bar for beers and some chit-chat.
1500pts takes about an hour and a half.

Of course, there are exceptions. Some kids in the club take 4 hours to play 500pts (but they lack the discipline and focus and are also 14 year olds who lose badly*).

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.

Ok, yeah it must be learning curve then. I went and played my first game at the shop. 1500pts took around 1:45, but was on a 4x4 table. So that sounds good. Just need to get the home games running as fast.

Thanks for all the input!

2,000 points or less rarely take longer than 2 hours for me.

It demonstrates an effort made to be understood, and to make your post an easy and pleasant read. By making this effort, you can often elicit more positive responses from the community, and instantly mark yourself as someone worth talking to.

I'm very glad you've gone with the former rather than the latter. Kids who have no sense of balance and sportsmanship really ruin things... Even if you aren't playing with them having that kind of boarderline psychosis taints most everything. I'll typically walk out or not even start if those people are around and being loud. That lesson I learned the hard way... If you let them anywhere near your games you'll spend a lot of time arguing and discussing issues that have absolutely nothing to do with the game at hand.
