I've been working on my CSM army for a couple months now, and have gotten to the point where I'm assembling/painting my chosen Chaos space marines, but I'm a lil confused. You can't buy a box of chosen, and I haven't found a good example of what they're supposed to be. Can i just designate them as such in the beginning of the game? Or is there something else? any help is much appreciated

Yes you can just say what unit is your Chosen or do what I plan on doing and use the mutated bits to show they are chosen CSM

Yeah I went crazy trying to figure it out too....

Chosen are just described as a more elite version of CSM. I think it's important to give them some sort of distinction to stand out over run-of-th-mill CSM, so I converted robes and tabards onto mine, and gave them fancier helmets form a WHFB Chaos Knights sprue.

Yeah a lot of people are playing their old converted possessed as chosen now because the possessed cost so much. It is a great way to use your old havocs and CSM models now that most armies use plagues and zerks in the troop squads

I've decided I'll give them gold pauldrons so they'll stand out, thanks for the help. Now I just need another pred and to paint Kharn and it'll be time to finally start playing.
