Hi I could use some advice on making a army for chaos. I've just ordered the starter box set, my terminator lord, a box of thousand sons, and a space wolf iron priest who i'm going to use as a sorcerer. The fluff behind my army is going to be recently turned to chaos so no demons or princes. any advice will be welcome!!!

Um well for starters i could tell you that you probably want a rino for most of not all of your squads and you should consider getting plague marines if it fits the army fluff your going for. Their really hard to kill and you should have a descent amount of tank kill ( power fist aspiring champs, chosen) other then that i think you'll be good.

Get some terminators for your termie lord. Does the battlebox come with terminators? Load the Sorc with the posessed that comes in the box, give him either Warptime, Gift of Chaos, or Winds of chaos. Against Hordes: Cast Warptime and try to gift models. in KP missions, don't replace with a chaos spawn, in objectives, always do. Winds of chaos can be used instead of gift, I prefer gift, but wind is probably more effective. Against MEQs, TEQs, or ICs: Cast Warptime and use your force weapon against multi-wound models.Neither Gift of Chaos nor Wind of chaos nor wind of chaos will help you much, but they are equally useful, for what it's worth. The thousand sons should be in a rhino. They're crazy slow and crazy fragile in CC. Your Aspiring Sorceror should have either Bolt of Change or Doombolt. Never let them get into CC, they are Pathetic in CC (compared to the rest of your army anyway)

Yes, try and find some room for some fluffy Plague Marines.
And I beg you to reconsider your stance on using demons(specifically princes)
Wing MoN Princes with Warptime will put a priceless look on your opponent's face.
If you don't want princes at all, get two termy lord HQ's (or one termie lord and one termie sorc)
if going for two termie lords, I recommend kitting them out for CC, such as IoK and Daemon Wep. And place them in a 4-man squad of termies, placed inside a LR.
do that for any/all termie lords.
For sorcs, put them in a squad of marines. ablative wounds, as many will say. I would recommend using Plague Marines as the sorc's "bodyguards," however I don't fancy using sorcerors, as Daemon Princes are slightly more survivable. (they're a huge target, BUT, they can't be insta-death'd, but have a worse save than a termie sorc, but are also better for CC)

wow thanks for all the advice guys!
first off the box set does come with a rhino which i am planning to put my Thousand sons.
I have one question on warptime: does that affect the entire squad or just the sorcerer?
Ill definitely grab plague marines with plasma guns (yeah feel no pain)
also Oblits and terminators.
oh are defilers any good?

TBH to not deal with the annoying metal, just order normal CSM and paint them cult. So just take those CSM from the stater set and paint them nurgle and tada! I don't really like oblits just b/c they can be ID'd.... They are still good but you have to get them in good cover imo.

He who fights with monsters might take care lest he thereby become a monster and if you gaze for long into an abyss, the abyss gazes also into you |

Only the Sorceror, which is why it is bad on aspiring sorcs.
Defilers are great. They are generally better as shooty units, as all their weapons are twin linked.
6 Oblits should be enough for anybody, and a defiler is 100-ish points less.

Honestly, don't get caught up in all the fancy crap. Cult Marines can do one job or so better than regular CSM, but are often hampered in some other fashion. You'll want lots of anti-tank, so take Melta guns often. Unless the squad is specifically anti-infantry or some other purpose, take Melta guns. Oh yeah, and Melta guns are really good. 1k Sons aren't that utterly horrid in combat compared ot many other armies, and have a 4+ Invuln save which gives them a small bit of staying power and makes them the best screening unit for other troops (aside from vehicles). Just cover your bases, have plenty of models on the field. A few squads of cult marines won't be able to survive against a whole bunch of anything else, and can only kill one unit a turn anyway (unless your opponent lets you suck more than 1 unit in combat at a time and you somehow magically kill both). KEEP YOUR POINT COSTS DOWN. Never take anything "just because."
