Ok, I've been working on a squad of five true scale Chaos Space Marines. Originally I wanted to work on some Heresy era Word Bearers, so red scheme and sort of Chaos looking, but not over the top. The army would be a few Marines (these five normal ones and maybe a few Terminators and a vehicle) and a whole bunch of almost naked (loin cloth wearing) cultists and some cult leaders.


Later on I got tempted to do some Iron Warriors instead, I really like the metallic colours, but I don't know if I could pull those danger stripes off. They would be supported by some Traitor Army units in the form of longcoats, maybe some Dark Mechanicus stuff.


Now however...I got a different temptation. The Badab War was always one of my favourite conflicts in 40k history, heck I even opened a MSN groups for it a couple of years ago. However, I want my marines to be a bit Chaosy (not over the top though) so perhaps Red Corsairs rather than the Astral Claws. These would be supported by all sorts of pirates, models based on Eldar, Dark Eldar en empire kits.

Now I'm kind of confused...I don't know which one of the three I should pick and I thought you guys could perhaps convince me. By the way, I could definitely use some inspiration (especially on the Red Corsairs) so if you could post some ideas, be it just an idea or artwork or other models it would be more than welcome!

Red Corsairs. They're the Chaos Marine army I'd do if I had to use a GW invented scheme, but- and this is a big but- only in the old school colour scheme, where the only red was crosses through the Marines former symbols, as opposed to the current codex where they have a unified colour scheme... it works for long standing members/original Astral Claws, but not for Bob the Space Wolf who showed up last week.

For the pre-heresy choice, Word Bearers. You're only doing 5 guys, so you can go to town on them with parchments and tattoos and god knows what else. Iron warriors are a tad boring in that regard.

Every guy and his brother are doing red corsairs these days and red is getting boring.

@Dragonlover: With the Iron Warriors I could try out different types of armour and such. The paintjob would be quite easy (less for me to screw up).

The Word Bearers could be very crazy indeed...lots of purity seals and scrolls.

The Red Corsairs would mostly be in the modern unified colours, however I like the idea of one marine who is from another Chapter. However, I don't really like the simple red crosses through their old symbols so I might do it that the marine slowly gets to repaint their armour, part by part, depending on worthiness or something.

@Nicorex: Really? I've been looking around and haven't seen that many Red Corsairs...if you could show them to be that would be great because I could use some inspiration!

Yeah...but I'm not really in the mood of buying new GW products. I'm planning on using whatever I can get my hands on from my bits boxes and greenstuff.

As for the cultists, I prefer to have those naked loin cloth wearing fellows, kind of gives them this vibe from those 16th/17th century painting of humans being terrorised by daemons.

Ah yes, the trials of deciding on your paint scheme, only to change your mind once half the army is painted and do something else instead.

I'm having this problem with my Empire minis at the moment. Definitely settling on Nordland now. Or perhaps Altdorf. Mind you those Archers would look great as Ostlanders. Gah!
