Ok, so, after an epiphany that a big ole chimera moving as fast as a falcon- without and once of suspension in the tracks was utterly ridiculous- I started wondering about alternate models.

While I had this idea in my head- I was scroungin through one of the bitz boxes and found a SM Landspeeder that I had started some forgotten project upon years ago. And I realised it was about the perfect size for an armored car type vehicle.

So, a few hours of hacking, and a few hours of plasticard fabricating I have:

Its rough right now, but is big enough for 2 sentinel pilot figs in the cockpit- and then I'll have a 'commnader' fig in the turret. Still have to finish hte rear compartment and suspension. driver door, turret, detail work on hte armor plates. And rivets.

Nice work!

LAnd speeders are PERFECT platforms to make buggies and the like one. Infact I have 2 older(still plastic) speeders I planned on adding wheels and making them into either warbuggies or Skorchas.
Looking good so far, as always

I think by the time Im done with this one, its going to be unrecognizable as ever having been a land speeder lol

Im actually thinking about molding/casting a few. but that will take more modeling to fill the gaps, and would mean a sealed cockpit. Losing the driver details means less painting though...

Might lose the Turret too, go for a ring mount/hatch and make pintle mounts (with gun shields)for the various flamer/melta/chem cannon.

I like the look of the concept. Frankly why don't you just make it out of platicard with a chimera flamer turrent and GW wheels/weaponry? As you note I don't see the skimmer underneath and it would be cheaper. Just close in the sides and voila, armored car with nasty flamer!

When you finish be sure to put IG vehicle junk on it (bundles, ropes tec.) Can beacquired via GW and also Tamiya has not vehicle bits.

It looks a little small for a Hellhound...do you have a size comparison pic with a tank ?

To quote the lil green dude:

"Size matters not!"

Its supposed to be smaller than a regular hellhound, and look more like a fast vehicle than a clunky antiquated Chimera based variant

Calm down, you're embarrassing yourself.

Nice model - not to my taste, but it looks well made.

If you know what WIP means, maybe you should act like it?

Its not finished- thats not the final turret- should be obvious as it has been to everyone else.

If you have nothing useful to say on a WIP thread- maybe spamming somewhere else would prevent you from getting frustrated and making pointless posts and getting insecure about it when someone points it out?

On topic now.

Despite an attempted toe amputation last night- I managed to get alot done. Got the second door on, two hatches for the driver compartment were roughed out. Rear compartment is now closed up. Sculpted louvered viewports on the driver compartment. Added a weapon mount for the hull weapon(leaving it without a weapon for now).

On he hood section, I decided to fill in the recessed sections, once I did that any semblance to a SM speeder seemed to evaporate. I got some more armor plates added and began riveting, lots of rivets.

Still on the 'to do list'

Front bumper(which I may include a winch on)
Headlights
turret mounting plate
rear suspension/wheel mounts
detail work on back of vehicle, equipment racks & such.
sculpt different front wheels(hate GW playskool tires)

And the weapons/turret I may design my own turret, similar to a chim turret, but different.

Ever since I added doors to this thing, I've pretty much decided I want to make casts of it, so Ive been making it 'water tight' also. And this is also one of the reasons Im converting/building all the components I can. So far theres noting on it thats obviously GW, so their legal Dept wont be bothering me

So what kind of tutrret will you be making? Something in "Mad Max" style? Or more of a FW pattern turret, with the flamer on the side? Looking at the model, the main thing that would concern me is the height; adding much more may make it look a tad unbalanced. Not something that you'd want in a fast moving all-terrain vehicle .

Im either going to go with something similar to a chimera turret, or go with something like an open ring mount with a gun shield like the Multi Melta on a Land Raider Crusader.

And I'll get some pics up later. I dont feel up to hobbling around to find my camera just yet

The armored car looks great. Pictures are a bit fuzzy, but it doesn't matter all that much right now.

I also love that turret, it looks seriously cool.

Alrighy, 2 WIP shots that show the upgrades so far.

Im going with an armored pintle type mount. The weapon in the pic is what I'll be using as a melta cannon. I'll make Inferno and Chem cannon bits later. It still needs its gun shield as well.

Its lookin a lil stubby, so Im thinking a shelf/rack for a rear bumper, make a gear stowage sort of area, and a place to put a 'power pack' for the Melta cannon, and fuel/chem tanks when the other weapons are used.

I also decided to fatten up the rear tires since they were narrower than the fronts. I'm also going to make the new front tires next.

Might get pics of those up later tonight.

Try using the flash. There doesen't seem to be enough light.

Aesthetically, I think the gun should have a shield mounted on it, since those seem to crop up on pintle mounts.
Also, the front mudguards look kinda dinky just flat like that. Maybe angle them off so they look slightly more aerodynamic and angled? Flat armour plates, especially on the front, are a Bad Thing for protecting something as important as a wheel.

Ya, if ya read what I said I mentioned the gun shield :p

And theres plenty of light- like 200 watts worth and daylight form the window. Its just a crappy camera. Im gonna try a black back drop to see if I can trick it into focusing on the vehicle next time.

And I would have like to angled the front of the wheel housings, but I still have a bumper and winch to work onto the front, and the head light assemblies are going onto the fenders. So sloping them would just make it much more complicated and at this point would require redesigning the front end- which Im not gonna do

Besides, if I slope all the armor on it and make it look to 'realistic' in terms of design/execution, it would look totally out of place on a 40k battle field

See on the back where the white sheet of paper is you used for the background? Thats the distance you should take your pic with next time.
Dont worry about the size because "its moved back" since your pics are shrinked anyways.

Ive tried that. With macro, without, close up, farther back, zoomed in, zoomed out, with and without flash. Blurry no matter what I try.

Im doing it at the same distances I photo'd my squiggoths at, and those for the most part are much clearer.

I think this vehicle has some sort of psychic camouflage

It's not a chaos vehicle not yet fully emerged from the warp is it?

I like the look of it - I can even see the rivets if I don't squint too much!

Looks much better now with the little turret and sides all done up than the first pic, which I wasn't a fan of. All coming together very well now.

Got the tires sculpted up better. Made the rear ones about 50% wider and got rid of the GW tire on the front.

Only one of each though. being the lazy sculptor I am I think i might just mold the ones I have and go from there.
