So, I'm buying a new army tomorrow (between $300 and $400), and I have no clue what to buy. I'm horrible for never being satisfied with an army (Didn't like Orks or Tyranids), and honestly don't know much about the other armies. I play against mainly Tau and Eldar, and only seem to get destroyed consistantly by Tau. I'm basicly looking for an army that will stand up against them, and has a lot of tricks in their pocket. About 1500 points worth to start.

Please please pleeeeeaaase, help me choose and army.
I appreciate any feedback on armies you play, or friends play. Pro's and Con's. Anything.

Why don't you start with a 500 point army list? it gives you a small taste of what the army is like, and you wont blow off a lot of cash with something you don't like.

against tau hey??? k....lemme see use this 1500 pts list...it's a pretty allrounder!!Should work against pretty much everything:

BLOOD ANGELS 4th COMPANY:

HQ:
Chaplain( Plasma Pistol, Meltabombs, Jumppack)=140

ELItES:

Death Company(10 men)
(Jump Packs, 7 extra)=260

TROOPS:
-Assault Squad(10 men)
(2 Plasma Pistols, Powerfist, Meltabombs) =310

-Assault Squad(10 men)
(2 Plasma Pistols, Powerfist, Meltabombs) =310

-Assault Squad(10 men)
(2 Plasma Pistols, Powerfist, Meltabombs) =310

HEAVY SUPPORT:

-Predator(TL-Lascannon, LC sponsons, extra armor)=180

__________________________
= 1510 POINTS

...hope that helps...good against IG and tau and with the predator against tanks.....strike suddenly with the as and use the chaplain with the death company, so they won't run against any enemy unit...

I'd also suggest you list what units are really giving you problems.

Its not really a particular unit I'm having trouble against.
I think I'm more just looking to hear other's experiences with their armies (If you have experience vs Tau, let me know how it went), and to see what others are playing.

I just want to know more about other armies I guess. And who best to hear from then other players.

Dark Angels

Pro's: Great fluff, Termies and Bikes as troops, sick Librarians, neat chaplains

Con's: Point costs are a bit more than the standard Codex. Storm Shields only give a 4+ Invul Save. There are a few other cons that some people may list, but those are the only "flaws" I see.

But over all, I love using the Dark Angels codex more than the vanilla one.

Well... Orks and nids are mostly assaulting armies with lots of models. And if you didn't like them try something opposite like.. Space Marines or Tau. Maybe a Dark Angel deathwing army?

Whats the benefit for Blood Angels?
Beside jump marines as troop choice.

Magnus: But I know what's best, bawwwwww! Emprah: Horus, tell Russ to bring Magnus to me because I said so. Horus: Emprah wants you to kill Magnus because he said so. Russ: Fine. Russ: Ah well. Now to go kill Horus. Russ: Rowboat, how have you not been doing anything? Guilliman: . . . I've been writing a book. Russ: Sigh. Let's go. Guilliman: And I fought the Word Bearers! Horus: Oh shi--Spess Puppies a'comin? Abbadon: And the Ultramarines, sir. Horus: Who? Anyway, this looks bad. *enter Sanguinis* What are you doing here? Come to join me? Jonson: I did nothing! Guilliman: I did more nothing that you! Jonson: Nuh-uh. I was the most worthless! Guilliman: Have you read my book? Dorn: No one likes that book. Khan: C'mon guys. I play Guard.

Pros: Cool vehicles (lots of variety), flexibility between horde and mech forces, new codex, upgrade flexibility

Cons: Infantry die fairly quick to most fire, relatively low leadership, need more models than other armies for higher point games, certain vehicle types (i.e. Executioner Russ, Devil Dog, etc...) arent out and wont be out until second wave (August[?]).

Hope that helps

well i don't actually play marines(or due Plague Marines count)??? i thought about a new de army but what if they get a new codex???that means 100% that they don't have access to the wargear anymore(only profile intern)and that sucks...plus i like the mandrake rules...ooh yeah...MANDRAKE RULES!!!

Well its not like there are ALOT of choices on what army to play.

The generic Space Marines codex has alot of options currently and a large variety in units and play style.

Tip stay away from the DA codex unless you want to play an all terminator army. Since generic marines can take bikes as troops as well.

The other option is to try out a mech army. IG mech vets might be what you are looking for.

I dread to think...

Necrons - the most indestructible race in the galaxy!!

Pros=WBB - best rule EVER, good armour, monolith, lots of wargear for Lord, some awesome close combat units, Monolith, every weapon can glance any vehicle, best model in the game, and the monolith (have i mentioned that yet?)
Cons=stupidly expensive (points wise), small armies, glancing hits can no longer destroy vehicles (WTF!?) pariah/monolith/c'tan are going to attract tons of fire power, and thats about all i can think of.

If you ask me, not bad as a whole.

I would recommend imperial guard just because they're my main army, but since you don't like nids or orks and they are "horde" armies, you may not like IG in the end.

But, even though IG is pretty much a "horde" army too, it doesn't have to be played like that. There's so much flexibility in the new codex. If you don't want tons of men on the board you can get away with having a lot of tanks and a few units of vets for troops. You're tanks will blow everyone to tiny bitz. However if you decide to go that route, I would definitely look for some Apocalypse deals where you can get 3 tanks for the price of 2.

But if you really don't feel like guard is for you, I would go with marines either the loyal type or chaos. Or try space wolves as they're supposed to be getting a new codex this winter.

I would suggest you buy a few codexes and proxy a few different armies and figure out which army you like to play prior to buying it.

If you want an army that requires some skill to play, look to Eldar or Dark Eldar.

Ignore these Space Marine players, SMs are the most boring army to play with (And I would know, as GW turned my Chaos Marines into Space Marines with spikes).

If you do like SM ... I have 1500 box...that is not so expensive...

I was thinking about the Force in the Gamesworkshop.com were you have an allready army to 1500 and with the rest you can spend how ever you like

So... there are Troops Hq assult... 1 Land Raider- even the Tau railgun need s some luck to get him down, and a Whirlwind and a vindicator-demolisher cannonr s 10 ap 1... not so bad..plus it has a lot of SM like 20-30 I thinik + one hq

hmm... actually GW doesn't have the old apocalypse formations on their site anymore :( but, check your local store(s), they might have some of the box sets laying around and if they've been laying around this long they might even be wanting to part with them even cheaper

Or if not, go with the battalion box set. Think of it as a platoon that comes with a free sentinel. You could get the batallion, another box or 2 of guardsmen to make vets and another command squad. Then you can add in 1 or 2 more sentinels to go with the one from the batallion, and a leman russ or 2 and you should have a good start on a pretty decent and balanced army

Then save up some cash for august so you can get the new tanks that are coming out.

Yea, Only problem is, I don't want any sentinels. Basicly, I want Russes, Transports, a valc or two, and the squads to run em. But I don't know. I'm just a little worried that this is going to run me way more than $400 Can to get the starter army I want

Well why not build your starter army around a few battle force boxes. They come with a bunch of sqauds some heavy wepons teams and a Leman Russ. Buy three and you have a 3k point army(that's an estimate)for around 324.00$.

Made in ca
Umber Guard

Mostly because I'm looking to go Mech instead of foot heavy. So the 3 starter sets would be a waste in that case. Well, not really a waste, because infantry are always important for guard, but not really the direction I'm looking for.

Ah, sounds like you want the old Battleforce rather than the new one (old came with a russ, not a sentinel)

I'd recommend buying the battleforce, and then selling the sentinel if you dont want it (or trading it with someone) then buy a Russ or two, and a Chimera or two.

Then you can upgrade infantry squads by buying the pop together guys that come in fives for 9$ (stupid price increase)
