So after reading PS from cover to cover a few times. A few things became apparent to me.
It seems like, unless you have an excessively large collection of miniatures, you're going to have to buy some more to be able to take advantage of some of the different force org charts available for the game. It further struck me that some armies might be lacking rules-wise from being good attackers or defenders. An example is that Orks seem like they might be better at defending than attacking as they have only one entry in their codex that allows deepstriking. Now I realize that PS allows for the DSing of different units, but I'm thinking that a unit of 30 boyz DSing might be rolling on the DS mishap table quite a bit. So I've decided that any new minis i buy are going to be solely for beefing up the role of defender. I'll be buying some more wagons, maybe some kans, big gunz etc. But I don't think I'll be buying anything new that allows me to be an attacker. I did some quick math and it would be around 500 USD to beef out 6 units of stormboyz.

Does anyone else think some of the same things?

Oh, I'm sure too, I don't believe it's any secret that PS is a huge money making scheme, like Apoc. But unlike Apoc, you can't really just throw any old model into the mix, and make it work.

I guess I'm just questioning more if anyone who has a smaller size army like myself (I have maybe around 3k pts if every thing is maxed out) is going to be buying a whole bunch of new models, or planning out what they buy to fill one role as attacker or defender?

My CSM and Sisters armies are "small" in the sense that your 3k army is "small". I'm not planning on adding anything to either of them for PS. If I have to field 6 Heavies or 6 Elites, I have IG and Eldar for that.

As I mentioned in another thread I personally am very wary of running out to buy things simply to play a supplement like Planetstrike or Apoc., etc. after getting burned badly on LATD a while back (and genestealer cult many moons prior to that).

For apoc. for example I have a rule of not buying more of any one thing then I could hypothetically use in a standard game with single force org. Sure it would be cool to have 20 deff dreads or six exorcists, but I'm not going there, because history has shown that these supplements WILL get axed probably in 3-5 years, and What am I gonna do with 16 extra deff dreads?!?

Same for Planetstrike as far as units, meaning I'm not running out to buy three more Rettributor squads, etc. Not gonna happen, I'll make due with what i have. Terrain is another story, but that is usable for regular play so it doesn't count.

My one weakness is for Stompas: Love the kits and love building them. I hope to have three. Yes these might become exspensive shelf ornaments as well, but technically they are only three models...

Somewhere.

My friends and I, rather than going out and grabbing a million more models, are simply using either two on two player matches or allowing allies from another army to bulk up the force. Which is easy enough if you have some Grey Knights/Sisters of Battle to hand and play Imperial, but we'll allow almost anything that makes sense.

Planet Strike is nice and all...but I'm not gonna go out and buy three more boxes of Terminators or a few more Land Raiders for it.

I don't see a problem with a new way to play necessitating new models.

Planetstrike will mostly like remain a friendly type of game (ie it wont be at the tourney scene) so use allies or proxies.

I'm sure quite a few people have large enough armies so that they wont actually need to buy any new models.

Yeah of course PS and apoc are money makers but thats why I use "other" methods of acquiring models, nothing illegal of course.

i have around 8000 pts of orks depending on upgrades and am in the process of scrach building meganobz, kanz and dreakz, as well as a few bastions. such is the blessing of being an ork player. just cut up some scrap, get some gretchin to hold up the metal, then give your loota mates rivet guns (rapid firing, big daddy guns) once their done just clean off the gretchin bits and your done.

While I think PS could become something like CoD, defunct and forgotten 5 years later. I think APOC will be around for much longer.

Or at least as long as GW keeps releasing the big models for it. It's just such an easier game to play than PS or CoD, all you do is take all your models and throw them on the table (which I've quite literally seen, when a guy showed up with a green tide at the last apoc game i played in).
It doesn't require any special scenery or even to buy specific models like PS.

Back on topic, while PS seems like a great expansion, I still don't think I'm going to go crazy and get enough models to be either the attacker or defender.

Keep in mind that once you get past the "OMFG six heavies!!!" reaction you have to realize that you don not have to have six heavies or six elite or what not to play nor to win. The Planetstrike force orgs allow people to build those thematic terminator strike forces or IG tank lines, but it is not a requirement to play the supplement nor is utilizing this option of overloading some aspect of your armies force org a guaranteed win button...

I sell a lot of models to people for cheap seeing as I got most of it for free. Of course the GW where I play/advertise my stuff dislikes it but allows for trades and I can sell stuff if I go 2 steps out of the store when we trade the money.

EDIT- Thats how some people who I play got models that were good at PS.

I found my Grey Knights to be awesome attackers in Planet Strike. I can turn my PAGK into Fast Attack instead of troops, so 90% of my army can assault on the first turn after they Deep Strike.

One little advantage to an old codex with new rules!

To play Devil's Advocate:

Alot of people don't have the models to fill out all the optional slots in a standard FOC. If they haven't been compelled to go buy all those models there's nothing about an expansion that is going to either. Planetstrike does push a couple of buttons though. People like big shooty or big assault choices of which the expansion offers more FOC slots for both, so I guess there could be a temptation there.

Personally I have some extra models in all the catagories for variety's sake so I'm Ok. Even so, if I did not have a bunch of extra stuff I could still play the expansion because the cupulsory units are no more demanding than normal 40K.

In the end I do see it as a bit of a cash grab, but the expansion can easily be played with current armies used for vanilla 40K. From the games I've played or witnessed it is my favorite rule set of the lot.

I'm looking forward to using all my destroyers and scarabs as the attacker. It will be a type of list that would be illegal to play in standard 40k.

But yes I'm guessing I'll have spent 500 bucks on new minis by the time my PS buys are done.

As an incentive to buy more models, PS seems much weaker than Apoc, because they bothered to do more thinking rather than "THROW EVERYTHING YOU OWN ON THE TABLE," which always struck me as incredibly lazy.

I still laugh when I read the White Dwarf about Apoc and how players always wanted to field their whole collections at once. I know several people with huge collections, and none of them give a rat's ass about putting it all down at once.

Either way, I'd rather run out and buy stuff for PS. I'm a fan of non-standard force org charts. That's why the new missions were a disappointment to me. I sometimes play adapted versions of the ones out of the 3rd edition book (cause there's so fething many).

I haven't really felt like it pushes me to buy new units, although I'm one of the types that would like to eventually build an entire Space Marine chapter so... yeah. I don't have problems spilling out over the regular FOC.

What it does feel like is it really, really pushes you to buy several bastions. Without somewhere to hide from the firestorm attackers seem to get a rather nasty advantage. Without the bastions the defenders are pretty much required to set up the terrain with a metric butt-ton of impassible terrain to force the attacker to foot slog from the DZ (which, I don't know, seems a little too good.)

I'm probably going to make use of the CoD terrain I've put together, I'm just not sure how to treat them. Probably just as regular old terrain pieces but, eh, who knows. Even with a 4+ cover save the firestorm looks like it could be fairly nasty.

At least the new stuff looks like it should only take, maybe, an hour to paint up per piece.

?

If the sight of a giant battlefield covered with cool terrain and hundreds of tanks and models and superheavies and titans doesn't stir something in a 40K player, then I wonder what exactly would ever get them excited...

No, it's certainly a cool thing to see, I just never sat around and said "Gee, I wish I could play everything I owned at once! Wouldn't that just be great?"

It was more like, "Well team games and such are great but the big ones just take too long."

The attitude of Apoc in WD was "FINALLY the wait is over and you can play massive games that you could NEVER have done before."

Sure the rules are streamlined and such but parts of it still strike me as lazy.

Yeah, but if you're already buying stuff, it's nice to be able to use it.

But you could have 2 or 3 each of 2 or 3 different kinds of things. And that is really what PS and Apoc encourage.

For example, regular 40k says you can only field 3 Elites. So, you might have 2 Dreads and 1 Termie squad. But you could bump them to 3 Dreads and 3 Termie squads, own no more of either than what you could field in regular 40k, and still drop all 6 Elites down in PS or Apoc.

You know, there are multiple flavors of Stompas... I suggest you consider collecting one of each variant.

I disagree that PS is a lame attempt to get you to buy more models.
It certainly makes me want to buy bastions and such, and it does make me want to buy a lot of stormboyz i just don't know if i can justify it yet.

If they release the bastion as a normal piece of terrain without a new rule set to go with it would you still be tempted to buy it? I would.

A new day, a new time zone.

I certainly would buy one, but due to how it's used in Planetstrike, I'm having no trouble deciding that I wouldn't mind having two or three.

I have no interest in Planetstrike (ok, I do...but my wallet does not) but I am certainly planning on scoring as much of the new terrain sets as I can afford. If GW isn't going to sell models, they are most definitely going to be making crap tons of money on the new scenery.

In a heartbeat. It's killing me right now that I have about 3K worth of repayments (lawyer, car insurance, building maintenence, loan repayments) and can't buy the 6-8 Bastions I desire.
