I pay full price at my friendly local gaming store - the owner runs a comics shop, but he keeps a LOT of GW stock and has multiple gaming tables with nice scenery. He's a long-time historical and fantasy (and 40K!) gamer, and an all-around nice guy. He runs a nice family place where 8-year olds, old geezers like me, and tattooed and pierced punks can all rub elbows and have a good time without anybody being traumatized...

I figure it's worth paying full price to have access to a nice hobby setting like that!

I whole-heartedly agree. I try to buy all my stuff at a local hobby shop, Phoenix Games. I know I can save a bit of money if I went through some of the online sites, but places like Phoenix are hosting 'Ard Boys tournaments, providing locally accessible paint and modeling sessions, etc. As a fairly new gamer to the hobby, I really benefit from those sorts of services, and that far outweighs the online discounts, in my opinion.

I make all major purchases >100 to start armies or for codex updates from the Warstore or Chaos Orc or ebay. I buy 20 dollar blisters that I see browsing lookie here I'd like this one to do some conversion. and codexs from the Local Gaming Store to give them some support. I do like supporting the local game store but when it starts costing you a significant amount more it is hard to justify. The prices on food and necessities really went up this recession. I shop at Costco and Walmart to save money.

Impulse buys, or the stuff under $50 or so I'll just pick up from my local GW. Otherwise, depending on the savings I can wrangle, I go with maelstrom, the warstore, or e-bay.

Something like that.

When my LGS has more tables and more terrain then I do and draws bigger crowds then our private club for events then I'll be glad to play in their stinky game room...

Also if they could have the product in the store that I want when i want it that would be a bonus...

That's a really big problem I've found with most LGS's. Seriously, if I have to wait for it to come in anyway, why would I not buy online for a discount? If it's in stock, it's much easier to justify an impulse buy, but otherwise you have to ask, "What's in it for me?"

Agreed.

I get next day delivery from Warstore (If I order on a Tuesday it is on my doorstep on wednesday) at a discount, and they rarely don't have what I want in stock (and they have a far larger range of products then any LGS in my area).

Compare that to having to drive over 40 minutes one way to the closest LGS (assuming traffic/weather cooperate) a far smaller array of goods, having to pay full retail which limits both purchase choices and often results in them being out of stock on items i want.

Add that to the fact that my club has more tables in our game room then the LGS and has a larger selection of higher quality terrain and that we attract more players (of a higher maturity level and generally less stinky) to our game nights and events then the LGS events.

What exactly is the draw to use the LGS exactly?

I impulse buy....

And by that I mean spend 300 bucks on a credit card at work when I'm bored.

*facepalm*

-----------------------------------

Edit: As CT GAMER said. When my LGS decides to (1)put half the effort in to their 40k tables I have in to mine,(2)Stock something other than 'left overs' on the shelf,(3) CLEAN THE FREAKIN PLACE UP!

Then I might shift my frivolous spending to the local scene.

And I play in my odor free well lit basement. Or the living room, depending on where the wife wants to hang out.

Why do gaming stores have to stink (question my wife asked once)?

Besides, no gaming stores in a 75 mile radius from me with in store gaming.

Oh, and I can have beer while playing

But if you have someplace to play and have people meet, more power to ya!

I buy from them too. I never play there, but it's the nicest game shop I've ever been in in my travels across the country.

Nope.

I just think it's an interesting observation then few in these sort of thread scan ever just respond with "lgs". There is always some long explanation about how it is the "right" thing to do because of x, y, and z, etc. ,etc.

It's almost like they have to convince themselves they actually believe what they are typing...

Nor did I make any claim of universal truth nor say one was better then the other initially (though Molotov opened the discussion). My question was one based upon an observation:

In all these threads there seems to be a pattern of the pro-LGS crowd always wanting to preemptively preach to the on-line purchasers and/or to list an unsolicited laundry list of reasons why they support their lgs which inevitably shifts the discussion to the lgs vs. on-line debate without fail .

My point was why?

If you like/support your lgs thats cool. The fact that you buy there is proof enough of that alone without the unsolicited need for the case history on why you do. If you respond simply with "lgs" it is implied in that answer.

My game room never closes and I have more terrain then I'll ever need, so no I'm not jealous, but I'm glad you enjoy playing in your store. Have fun with that.

It was an observation that any in that camp are welcome/free to respond to.

People need to get over the rush to be "e-offended" every time someone questions them. Not everything is a troll. Relax and join the conversation if you have something to add, but lets get over the "victim" mentality...

You know, I've been trying to figure out how to explain this for a while and couldn't think of the words. When I'm at a FLGS, and want to buy something and they say "We can order it for you..." I don't want them to order it for me. I want instant gratification. If I have to wait for it, I might as well buy it online and save 20%.

You responded to my post with generalization and platitude, and state multiple times that the right answer to this thread was to simply answer the question in the most absolutely banal form possible because anything else is "preaching" and then you suggest I join the conversation? Scroll back - I joined; you whined. Lather, rinse, repeat.

I certainly don't feel like a victim, and I'm certainly not offended. I just think your original response was whiny and trollish.

I certainly agree with that; I use the War Store for a lot of things that my FLGS doesn't carry, particularly for non-GW related stuff, and for bits and such that aren't traditionally carried locally. But if I had my druthers, I'd rather buy local, get it now, and be able to talk to someone about the purchase as I'm making it.
