Hello, new to 40k and still awaiting my rulebook(it's in the mail, and I'm getting sooo tired of typing that disclaimer ), but I do have my tau codex so I'm putting together mockups at 1500 points. I'm not sure if I've overlooked it, but I dont quite understand the composition, I get the compuslory choices and I assume each mission is situational, but I was wondering how many HQ's one can take in 1500 point matchups. I'm running a fluffy army to begin with mainly because I dont know anyone else that plays 40k in this area so it's more about looks and lore, and I'm taking an etheral w/ the honor guard for extra rifles on the gunline. Is it 'legal' to run 2 HQ's in a 1500 point, or is that more of a situational/house rule sort of thing. As I said before it's not necessarilly going to be competitive, but I'd still like to be able to field the army should the chance arrive, rather than it just be a diorama.

If I remember correctly, in any game (unless the rules specify other wise) that you may take a maximum of 2 HQs in a game regardless of points as long as you take the compulsery number of units... hope this helps, and if I'm wrong, I'm sure someone will correct me...

Edit: Ok, looking up the FOC:

Compulsory (MUST take)
1 HQ
2 Troops

Optional (in addition to compulsory figures)
1 HQ
4 Troops
3 Elites
3 Fast Attack
3 Heavy Support

You must adhere to the force orginisation chart (which you can find on page 24 of your Tau codex). Basically, for a standard game, you have to take at least 1 HQ unit, but make optionally take a second one.

The only exception being Space Wolves, which need to take exactly 1 HQ unit per 750 points, rounding up (so on 1750 you need 3 HQ units, no more and no less).

The non-standard games have different rules, for example Planetstrike has the option to take a third HQ, and in Apocalypse you can take as many as you like.

In larger games that are not Apocalypse (I'd say, 2500-3000 pts+?) you may agree with your opponent that you may take another detachement (ie. another FOC) IIRC. There is something in rulebook, on the Organise Battle part. I think

Win/Draw/Lost statics
Space Orks: 11/1/1
Space Marines: 10/2/5
Lizardmen: 8/2/3
High Elves: 13/2/2 and one tournament victory!
Dark Eldar: 1/0/0

For normal 40K - 2
Apoc - As many as you can bring to the table within the agreed army total point value.
Cities of Death - 2 unless you use the alternate force organization charts inthe book then the Attackers can have up to 2 and the Defender can only ever have 1.
Planetstrike - Both Attackers and Defenders can have up to 3.

Your side is always the "will of the people" the other side is always fundamentalist, extremist, hatemongers, racists, anti- semitic nazies with questionable education and more questionable hygiene. American politics 101.

There are some armies like Space Wolves or BT where you can have 3-4 HQ choices, but TAU isn't one

I think the only codexes like that are space wolves and deamons, but while deamons can have up to 4 hq units they can only have 2 hq slots.

Aside from keeping to the Force org chart I think tau have some other stipulation where they MUST take at least 1 troop of firewarriors... am I right?

That is correct, we're 1+ Shaso/el and 1+ FW.
On a similar note, am I undesrstanding correctly that other armies have different force organization charts?

Nope everyone runs

1 Required HQ, 1 extra
3 optional Elites
2 Required Troops, 4 extra optionals
3 optional Fast Attack
3 optional Heavy Support

EDIT: Well, actually some armies move units around a little, but that is the basis for everything.
