Models individually might be cheep, but that can be deceptive as it can take several blisters to get a fully fleshed out unit. For example, my armored arty unit consists of 2 hummels, 1 observation panzer, 1 radio truck, and a staff. That is 5 blisters at about $10-11 a pop. And that is only for a minimum unit. I would need two more hummels and another observation panzer for a full size unit.

It all depends on what you want to play if it stays cost effective or not.

I'd say the costs are quite similar to 40k but you can make some very cheap armies if you focus on certain types of tanks.

The blisters are of mixed value. Infantry is usually good value but some of the tanks and artillery can be expensive when purchased this way. The artillery mentioned in the previous post are probably the most expensive to get if you want a fully kitted out unit.

The boxed sets however are generally very good, they often come with freebies and have more than enough options for everything in a unit. The boxed army deals are reportedly even better still.

All in all, I feel like I get more value when buying FoW just because of the sheer number of options and number of figures I get when I buy something. An infantry blister I bought recently has around 35 models and 9 bases which feels like good value regardless. You can also get some good deals shopping around the web a bit too.

Boxed army deals....that's how I got my starting base.

I would look at them if you were certain you wanted to get into playing. They all point in at 1500 and can be used pretty much assembled straight out of the box. Some of them are pretty one dimensional, but others lend good variety. I went with the 2. SS box and between the 6 tanks and the infantry, plus Nebblewuffers, had a diverse base to branch out from.

The smaller "company" boxes are also a pretty good value. I know my Brit Infantry box has 5 HQ stands, 18 infantry stands, plus PIATs and light mortars. That is enough to fill all available combat squads for a Fortress Europe Infantry Company.
