They really only kept it out because of the name copyright.

Is the info in a white dwarf or Rogue Trader?

Malal is in the old WFRP as far as I recall; not too sure about the recent version but I don't think he is. Malal also appears in the Kaleb Daark Comic strips the first strip printed in The Third Citadel Compendium and the last two in Citadel Journal. There was going to be a fourth strip but it never got printed.

There's a few easter egg odes to Malal from time to time.

--Dread Axe. There was this crazy teradactyl headed axe Kaleb used. The 3.5 CSM dex has a Dread Axe as wargear that was an obvious nod.

--Sons of Malice. Background and colorscheme are all a nod to Malal. There's even a short story in the new BL book Heroes of the Space Marines that points to Malal even further (I did not know this till today, stoked to read that story).

It seems pretty apparent they follow Malal or something like him.

--Belakor is thought to be a nod to Malal and the revival of the concept in a new way. Note 'Kaleb' is found reversed in Belakor.
