Feasting on the souls of unworthy opponents

Hey folks...I'm curious about how RTTs work; I've been to two of them now in my 40k lifetime. In the first one, I had a lot of unpainted models so didn't fare well; and got dinged on sportsmanship too because one of the players....well, nevermind.

I just went to another one yesterday. My whole army is painted (although unbased still) and I know the rules pretty well, so I don't really run into arguments or rules problems on the table anymore.

The tournament was set up like this:

Each game had 21 possible battle points (10 primary, 5 secondary, 3 tertiary, 3 possible bonus battle points)
Each game had 10 possible painting points.
Each game had 12 possible sportsmanship points.
Each game had 4 possible theme points.

At the end of the tournament, I had 63 out of a possible 63 battlepoints; 21 out of a possible 30 painting points, 34 out of a possible 36 sportsmanship points, and 10 out of 12 possible theme points.

At the end of the tournament, there was a seperate round of voting for "favorite opponent, favorite themed army, favorite painted army." These votes turned into points somehow, and I got edged out of winning the RTT by one point. The guy who won had 49/63 battlepoints, 32 out of 30 possible painting points, 37 out of a possible 36 sportsmanship points, 11 out a possible 12 theme points.

I'm not really "upset" or anything, for which I'm glad. I didn't lose a game, and don't feel cheated, but I am a bit curious as to whether that's the norm for RTTs? I prefer scoring in a non-subjective way, which is why I had so much fun at 'Ard Boyz. My only "interest" or "concern" is that the tournament winner didn't win all his games, while other players (including myself) did.

Lesson learned for me: My wife and I need to base her Ork army. =p

But does this sound pretty normal?

Yep, Totally normal. I have actually edged out a RTT because of best sportsman. I've also lost because I beat one guy so bad he tanked every single soft score he had available. RTT's are very much luck of the draw and random chance. Most of the local RTT's around here have gone to a non-subjective 12 point soft score checklist. It's made it a lot more consistant overall.

I remember playing in some "official" RTTs years ago when they were still fashionable.

What a terrible, terrible way to score a tournament. I'm so glad people around here have wised up and just run their own tournaments now.

I've always like RTTs. Unfortunate situations pop-up (like in Dash's tournament), but that's what happens when you add in soft scores. I also think that RTTs bring a different crowd of people to the tournament scene. People who are generally argumentative or whiny know that they have to be on their best behaviour. Others who don't usually have painted minis will make an extra effort to get them done. I remember the RTTs of third edition and how people in our group went without sleep many a times prior to tournaments because they were up late getting their army ready.

I say get your bases done and you'll win the next one Fo Sho.

*laughing* I know that I was on my best behavior. Things I'd normally call an opponent on I was letting slide....I was fidgeting in my pants!

I've played in RTT's that won't let people use models that arn't painted with at least 3 colors and on bases that are more then black stock out of the package.

I have seen RTT's end that way due to a large group of friends voting for someone in their group. Sad, but that does happen, what ever happened to spirit of the game?

Remember not all RTT's are scored this way, so please do not be discouraged.

I've seen that at Indy GTs. I say if that happens at a RTT you're out a little less money.
