Hey guys,

This isn't really meant to be an army list thread, but rather a request for "here are some do's and don'ts to think about".

I'm putting together a Cadian imperial guard force. I have valkyries, a Basilisk, buncha troops, couple of armored sentinels. I already think my heavy weapon teams are geared wrong (mortars) and started buying assault cannon ones.

My two opponents I will face most of the time play Salamanders and Chaos Space Marines (including a demon prince). What kind of stuff should I be taking in terms of kitting out my squads, vehicle choices (for example: do I take a basic LRBT or do I jump into the Executioner this Saturday?). Stormtroopers?

Any and all advice is appreciated. I expect we'll play a mix of "regular" 40k and Planetstrike.

The standard LRBT works wonderfully against all sorts of Marines. Against loyalist marine it tears em up, and even negates the advantages of Chaos Plague Marines by doubling their toughness. If you get one of the upcoming Demolisher Leman Russes, you can even wreck Terminators.

Autocannons are great to take (I'm guessing that's what you meant by "assault cannon" ones ) as they can just inflict a lot of wounds with relative ease, and even do some damage against vehicles. With loyalists you can do some damage against dreadnoughts, rhinos and the like, and against Chaos you'll be able to blast away at daemon princes, greater daemons, and anything with Mark of Nurgle.

Veterans with plasma guns can do wonderfully against both flavors of marine and their respective Terminators, and the aforementioned Plague Marines. Melta guns are nice too, and can hit dreadnoughts and land raiders really hard. Could infiltrate them or put them in Valkyries.

Keep things cheap so you can outnumber Marines. You should ideally outnumber them by a load. Try not to go to crazy and get loads of Stormtroopers - the AP3 is real nice, but they cost a buttload of points.

Apologies for the long post, but there's a lot to know about fighting Marines! Just load up on high strength, low AP weapons, and drown them in bodies!

All of the above is great advice.

Little more advice:
Plasma cannon sponsons on everything.

Stormtroopers are good, a single squad will do good things for you.
Stormtroopers are not THAT good, they are still S3, and are 16 ppm.

Some inquisitorial allies, will do good things for you.
Daemonhunters have mystics, that let you take potshots at everything he is deep striking (terminators, drop pods, etc.)
Sisters of battle get Divine Guidance, which does horrible, horrible things to MEQs.

armored sentinels are awesome. although this tactic usually only works great once per opponent, it's awesome. the armored sentinel has armor 12 which means standard marines (chaos and loyalist) need to hit it with krak grenades on a 6 and glance it's armor on a 6! you want to move forward and assault with them any time you can since you'll tie up a marine unit for a LONG time as long as they don't have a powerfist! i've held up 10 man tac squads for 4 turns with this.

We Munch for Macragge! FOR THE EMPRUH! Cheesesticks and Humus!

I put missile launchers on my armored sentinels.

Yet another mistake methinks.
