Looks good, but the upturned sandwich boxes look too much like... well... upturned sandwich boxes.
They need to be "imperialised" or given a load of camo netting/ jungle leaves.

Cheers,

Jack.

This is insanity at it's finest.

A good start, has lots of potential. Still needs a lot of work though. I've listed a few things you could try adding to it that would greatly improve the overall appearance and give it a more natural look, if you feel like giving any of it a shot

I'd advise adding more detail. Remove the ruin and paint it. Ultra-flat sprays are good for basecoating, and fortress grey is great for highlighting concrete/stone ruins. You could also find some ultra-fine (ie white tropical) sand at craft stores to add texture if you felt like getting the most out of it.

Trees. Many, many trees. If this is a jungle ammo dump, having a bunch of trees around the edges of it would be a good way to add some characteristic and make it look more like it was cleared out from a thickly forested area. The sand/dirt should be basecoated and drybrushed, which will help it blend in better with the grass and make it look more natural.

Also what did you use for your grass? It looks like a very rich green. If you have any places near you that sell model trains and diorama supplies, pick up a good ol' jug of static grass and some simulated bushes and high grass clumps. This will help add some yellows and lighter greens which will give the appearance of dead or dying grass that's been heavily trampled on.

Try breaking up your grass base with some dirt patches too. Ammo dumps are high traffic areas, and there should be some dirt foot paths and tank tracks going everywhere. For tank tracks, I find that using small strips of really soft clay mixed with some mud and then pressing tracks into it using some of the leftover treads from a vehicle sprue works wonders. Just make sure you line er' up roight'n propa' or it'll look a bit wierd (I've done this before >.<

Vehicle and Heavy Weapons sprues also come with loads of extra ammo boxes and fuel drums, so you should snatch a few of these up, as they work really great for odds and ends on terrain.

You have a really great idea using old blisterpacks as raincovers. You did forget to put a door in one of them though. That one Jungle Fighter manning the gun must get tired of having to climb up onto the roof all the time

Anyway, like I said, it's a really great start with a lot of potential, but it still needs a few things. Hope you consider adding some of the things suggested here. This has the opportunity to be a largely contested campaign piece if you decide to work on it some more to appeal to the 'cool' factor

ADD: Just thought of another thing you could do, and that is to prop this on a polystyrene hill and make a ramp for the road up to it. That would also give it a more natural appearance, and would add some personality.

Cheers for the suggestions but this is gonna be a dump for both Imperial Guard and Space Marines. I'm hoping to take it to my local gaming club and see what they all think.

Probably somewhere I shouldn't be

What metallifan said.

Also, a good piece of terrain tells a 'story' - why did they pick that spot, what was there before, what happened to the place etc. etc. Thinking about those things ties the whole piece together.

Need some clearer pics mate. Hard to see em' when the details are all fuzzy. If you've got a digital camera, try that on a "Close up" setting. My close up setting is for anything closer than 28mm so it's excellent for getting right up there. Check out London Drugs or Wal Mart or any other big stores for some decent digitals with USB connectors.

Your Ultramarines don't look bad from what I can see. For some reason the blue looks really bright but that might just be the lighting. The Guardsmen definately need inking or highlights though. That's the thing with Catachan. Because they have bare arms and faces, and a lot of cloth surfaces, they need inks and highlights or else they just look too clean, and not in a good way. Pick up some Devlan Mud and water it down to about 50/50. That seems to work really well on flesh and green colours. It'll do wonders on your Catachan. You can also use it for some really good muddy water effects along trails and dirt roads. You'd have a lot of use for it between your Guard, Bald and Screaming Marines, and the ammo dump (assuming you add more to it)

Your Black Templars (I'm assuming that's what they are?) still look pretty WiP, but I'd suggest thinning the paints quite a bit. They look like they're going on quite heavy. Remember the old saying: It's better to need 2 thin coats than one thick one.

This stops you from turning it into a really amazing piece of art... How?

Challenge yourself! Nothing says a job well done like making the other players at your FLGS hang their heads or glare at you in jealousy over an awesome terrain piece. Come on, giver' a go and try some more details. Stop by a model train shop. They always carry huge selections of Static grass, fine dirts, sands, and gravels, and some really nice trees. All for about 1/10th of their GW equivalent and at about 10x the quality level.

Spreading some Imperial Aquilla symbols around, along with logos for the Guard and Marine chapters you use will spice it up a bit.
A different one on each of the 'bunkers' shows who lives where
And more oil drums, ammo crates, stacks of rockets etc. It IS an ammo dump, where's all the ammo?

I refuse to enter a battle of wits with an unarmed opponent.

Oh! forgot to add: Cut off the flashing around the Blisters. You don't want that little bit of flashing to take away from the overall look.
