Hi everybody, this is my first post – so please don't be too critical.

I recently got back into 40k after a gap of some 15 years. I decided that I'd paint up the models I had left from all those years ago, to give me some practice on painting. But after I'd done some, I thought it would be nice to create a Company consisting entirely of "historic plastic" – plastic marines that came in one of the edition sets or other games. To make it representative of all editions to date, I decided to include the clip-together models from the 4th and 5th edition, so my Company would look like this:

origin................................ Squad type.... status........notes
RTB01................................ Tactical........ painted
RTB01................................ Assault..........painted.... (actually Vanguard Vets, 'cos the weapons are no longer legal)
RTB01................................ Assault..........got
Space Crusade.................... Tactical..........painted.... (actually Sternguard – used the Missile Launcher for Devastators)
Space Crusade.................... Devastator.... painted.... this was the only box which came with enough heavy weapons
Space Hulk........................ Terminator..... got
Genestealer........................Librarian(s)......NEED...... Contains 5 Marine Terminator Librarians
Ultramarines (game)............ Scout............ NEED...... The only plastic Scouts before current ones were in this box(?) 3 sets of: 1 sgt + 4 scouts (1 with heavy bolter)
2nd Edition..........................Tactical..........painted.... (there's a second squad in the box – not used so far)
Warriors of the Imperium...... Devastator.... got............Not actually a game box, but the first box of (6) plastic marines. I'm going to add 4 x 2nd Ed / Space Crusade heavy weapons to make a Devastator squad
3rd Edition.......................... Tactical ?......NEED?
4th Edition.......................... Tactical........ work..........clip-together marines - not avail except in Edition box
5th Edition.......................... Tactical........ got............ clip-together marines - not avail except in Edition box
5th Edition.......................... Terminators..got............ first Terminators in an Edition box
5th Edition.......................... Captain........ got............ first Captain in an Edition box

The 3rd Edition came and went while I was away from the hobby, so I've never seen it in real life. However, I have White Dwarf 226 with the introduction to it. It apparently came with poseable marines which look to be the same as those still available (although arranged on the sprues differently).

So I wondered if anyone can tell me:
- is there any way to tell the Marines included in the 3rd edition box from those currently available in the Tactical Squad box, once they're detached from the sprues and painted up? (If not, I may cheat and use the current ones, or I might use the second squad from 2nd edition.)
– is the Land Speeder the same as the current one?
- is there anything I've missed or got wrong?

Thanks

The 3rd ed starter set Marines were almost exactly the same as the current Tactical Marines. They only difference is that the newer ones come with an accessory sprue with a plasma gun, melta gun, and some other accessories, while the original just came with a flamer, rocket launcher, and the sergeant's bolt pistol and chainsword, plus an empty banner pole.

The land speeder was NOT the same as the current kit, since they very recently recut it and made it easier to assemble. Some stores still have the older kit though. The old land speeder was a serious bitch to build though.

This is a noble effort - let me know how it goes. My Crimson Fists army is about 90% vintage figures like this, so I can really get into this kind of project.

Thanks for the fast reply - and the detail. One of the things I had been toying with was using different weapons on the various tac squads - now I know I mustn't put Plasma or Melta guns with a "3rd ed" squad (even if I actually build it from current sprues...). And I'd better get an original land speeder while I still can (even if I don't build it yet).

The land speeder in the ravenwing box is a slightly older version than the current one; but I beleive the third edition one was part metal?

You can buy old style metal special weapons marines on the GW website (in collectors section) if you can bear to get a few metal bits.

I'm specifically doing an all plastic Company - it limits the options. There must be hundreds of metal marines out there, 'cos you can do a very small edition of metal; the great thing about plastic is that it costs a lot to tool up for it, so you have to be serious and do a lot. I think my list includes pretty much all the plastic marines before the current versions, unless anyone knows different?

Interesting comment about the land speeder. The impression given in White Dwarf is that everything in the 3rd ed box is plastic... I wonder if anyone out there actually has one?

The third edition landspeeder was ALL plastic.
As mentioned, it has since had its sprues recut, and now includeds the variants in the one box (so you can make a basic HB/MM landspeeder, and add a HF or AC to it to make a Tornado or a pair of missile pods to make it a typhoon.

Only the 3rd ed tornado and Typhoon kits were part metal.

A right, that'll be what I'm thinkiing of; then I was also right saying that the ravenwing box still contains the third edition Land Speeder (or at least mine did as it didn't come with the options/varients).

Very cool project! I like it.

My current ork army contains models from all the editions, but not as in such a thorough way.

I like the idea of going all plastic and having each squad from a different edition. I got a bit carried away and mixed all mine up in diffferent squads.

What chapter is your army?

EDIT- oh and I love the way you've even got space crusade in their! that takes me back

I cracked open a sealed 3rd edition box a few months ago. The speeder has been fully assembled and painted...

The Space Marines are still on their sprue. The Dark Eldar and terrain went to my friend which, in all likeliness, are completely untouched also, 'cuz he's a lazy bum.

Found this on eBay...

Thanks for all the info guys.

It's a DIY chapter. I have a fair bit of fluff for it, mostly 20 years old. I did think of posting it in the Army Profiles, but it doesn't fit too well with the way GW has developed the universe. I'll have a go at re-hashing it. And maybe post some pics of the army (from a distance, so you can't see the painting...)

Really like your landspeeder - I've a long way to go on my painting...

I am watching eBay, thanks, but I'm in the UK - shipping from the US would be prohibitive... it's a biiig box.

Sammael's Landspeeder kit was a third edition Land Speeder with a box of metal bits. I didn't get around to putting it together until last summer and then discovered all the Sammael conversion bits came in plastic in the current Ravenwing boxes, so I pulled the weapons off and replaced them with plastic so it stands up better. It was difficult to put together, I had to use 4 clamps at a time to keep it lined.

The 4th edition revised Land Speeder went together like a dream. That's the one that comes with the current production boxes with the current Ravenwing sprue.

They used the PITA Land Speeder (Land SPITA? ) in the 3rd Edition Boxed Set, I bought the boxed set used and cursed a blue streak, wishing I could call GW for a replacement..

Following the discussions above, I thought I'd try to find a 3rd ed landspeeder on eBay. Trouble is, I don't know which are the right boxes. There's a box at the link below which is not the same as either the one shown in White Dwarf 227 (original 3rd ed), or the current one: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Games-Workshop-Warhammer-40k-Space-Marine-Landspeeder_W0QQitemZ110420008597QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Toys_Wargames_RL?hash=item19b58b9e95&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14

Is that box still 3rd edition, or is it an earlier box of the current version, please?

(This is getting pretty obscure isn't it - sorry!)

Jelal -

I've still got my Landspeeder from the 3rd Ed box. It's partly assembled (didn't put the top on so I could paint inside) and unpainted. I'll be out of the country for a few days but shoot me a PM if you might want to trade for it.

4th edition Landspeeder. NOT an early version of the 5th ed LS.. which has all sorts of nice weapon options in plastic..

this one just had a HB or MM, no missiles or assault cannons..

Thanks for the offer, but I'd kinda like to assemble it myself - touch of masochism I guess...

Thanks for the info - this is much more complicated than I thought. I think I'll just wait for either a 3rd ed box set, or a landspeeder box that matches the White Dwarf illo. It's not like I'm in a hurry - I've still got over 30 models to paint...
