I was thinking of starting another army after SM, but wasn't sure on what one to get. I got a small Tau army but realised that it's not quite the army I want to play. So instead of wasting money only to find another army that I don't like I decided I would create this topic to see if anyone had any suggestions. I've basically narrowed it down to Imperial Guard, Necrons and Eldar. I want to get an army that's fairly balanced as in it can be either shooty, assaulty or a mix in between. My SM army was basically gunline with a Master of the Forge to get more Dreadnoughts, but I'm bored of SM.

The main armies I verse are Orks, Eldar, Tyranids, Space Marines and Blood Angels; if that helps. It's not that I'm looking for an army that will beat those all the time, just one that will stand a chance. I'm also undecided on the IG for the number of models I'll have to paint.

Thanks in advance.

All of those armies are going to be good, it just depends on how you want to play the game. If you go imperial guard then you will have a more mech army centered around tanks and a command squad. If you go necrons then you will be playing with some of the best troops in the game, because they get to roll to revive themselves everytime one dies. The only thing with necrons is once you only have 25% left, then the game is over. They are probably the best all around troops in the game, aside from space marines. I like the eldar out of this group best because you can go with the fire power from the lances and p cannons, go close combat with the howling banshees and scorpions, deep strike with the warp spiders, or tank hunt with the rangers. I think if you want to go for close combat and range then eldar would be the best if you build you army right, but necrons would be good for that too.

Well, I vote for IG as its top tier 1, while normal Eldar builds are tier 2, and Necrons are tier 2 or 3.

Eldar they are great so many tactics you can use with them.

If you walk a mile in another mans shoes you will be a mile away from him and you will have his shoes.

If you want a balanced force then Eldar are the best choice out of the ones you listed.

Thanks for all the replies.

Almost the same name as my SM chapter, Hawk Eyes
Anyway how do the Eldar go against hoard armies like Tyranids and Orks? They're the armies I verse the most out of the ones I listed. The nid one does have a lot of stealers and has 2 CC fexes and a flyrant, though. Just want to hear about what it's like before I get the wrong stuff and get tabled on turn 2 Fireprisms are an obvious choice I guess. But, also we end up playing objective capturing (can't remember atm seize and control, table halves I think) the most so I guess it would be good if I could also get some suggestions about each race and their objective capturing and holding abilities.

I'd guess that the Eldar and IG would probably be able to capture them quickly, but would the Necrons be able to hold them better?

Well it depends on how many points the orks and tyranids are using. Most of the time the orks are going to win the lower point games because they can overwhelm you in close combat. If it is a game around 1000 points or more then make sure you can get a wraithlord, they would be my pick over a fire prism just because they can take so many hits. A fast army isn't going to get the job done against orks and tyranids because you want to stay away and shoot them up. I would say take warp spiders but its so hard to deep strike on orks and survive until your next turn, since you can't charge. I would probably go with a farseer with warlocks for bodyguards, striking scorpions can match up to orks pretty good in CC, if the game is a little higher point, then i would take dire avengers over guardians, but either can be useful if you can get the guns in range, get a wraithlord for heavy, and then the rest is up to you. Maybe a squad of howling bashees, but you still need something to take out the flyrant and the carnis. thats a tough combination. Maybe a war walked and put some good range on it, or a vyper and try and get it down with multiple shots. I'll let someone else answer for the necrons and imperial!

Vs. hordes in small games Eldar wipes the floor with its high volume of shots.

Hold on, let me get back to Strongbad, Marx, Jack Black, Keith Moons, Muad'dib, Bruce Dickinson, Dr.Tran, Pete Townsends, The Vault Dweller, and the Muffin Man.
