I really like the look of the Eldars dark cousins and their fluff is pretty darn intriguing; but before I go and spend a few hundred dollars, I'd like to know Dakka's opinion on their viability. Are Dark Eldar anywhere near the top of tournament brackets with their raider spam builds? I have seen a few people saying they have won tourneys with them but they aren't that popular so I'm unsure...

Also has any more news been released about how they might be getting cut from GW's line?

Take all Jet-Bikes. Lots and lots of Jetbikes. And a few Warrior squads with Lances. . .

Then wait for the new codex

Dark Eldar are a competitive Codex, especially if you've had a decade to practice with them...

However, I'd wait until GW actually announces a new Codex before starting such an endeavor.

Please do, when GW finally realise that there is plenty of DE players out there they may actually update them for the first time in over a decade!

DE has one of the oldest 'dexes in use, so some of their rules and units can take merciless advantage of the 5th ed rules, the rest of it did not keep very well, I'm afraid. You will find there is only a few good lists out there nowadays (raider spam and the like) but so few players see DE these days, they'll hardly be ready for it. (unlike necrons)

Alright. I planned to buy a small force just to paint anyways so I'll wait with baited breath for the new DE 'dex

The new DE codex comes possibly out at 2010 (Brimstone at Warseer). But I wouldn't count on this. GW posponed the codes from year to year.

I play DE since 2002 and won a few RTTs with them. In the 5th ed, DE is even more playable.

I'd start with 3 Sniper squad, 10 Warriors with 2 dark lances, add some Ravagers with disintegrators, and 3 Raider squads, 10 Warriors with 1 blaster incl. Sybarith w/ agonizer.
The Archon is a monster in cc, give her agonizer, splinter pistol, combat drugs, shadow field, plasma grenades.

I just got done witnessing how good wycch cult raider spam is in the 'ard Boys semi finals. From everything I've seen dark eldar tend to have only a few "good" units to take in 5th edition such as raiders, wych cult, and ravangers. However, when spamming those at anything 1850 and above you need some luck to beat them.

Salamander Marines 65-12-13
Dark Eldar Wych Cult 4-1-0
Dark Eldar Kabal 36-10-4
