I dont think all gold is the way to go it will look horrible and you wont be able to see any features

for dark eldar I would recommend painting them black and doing weapon gubbinz and little bits and pieces in gold if youre commited to it.
of course you can do it if you really want to

Doing lots/full metallic units like I think you are planning on doing takes some serious skill to not make them look silly/cartoony, so I hope you know what you're getting yourself into.

There are ways of doing a mostly gold scheme and still make them look good though. I think these guys look decent (sorry, not the greatest pic) : http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_JsKZ1YCU6Z4/R5f41WjA7jI/AAAAAAAAAmM/wa8Qr8r4X5w/s400/P1000494.JPG .

You could also do as you said and only do an honor guard type squad in all gold and do the rest in a complimentary color like red with gold trim or something. You may also find it looks better to paint just a few details gold and leave the rest another color(again, red, black, etc).

In the embrace of the great Nurgle, I am no longer afraid, for with His pestilential favour I have become that which I once most feared: Death.

The only way I can see an all gold army being done well is with NMM. You could slap on some metallics and dull them with washes but I'm not sure how well that will turn out.

Armies:
(CSM/HH) - Iron Warriors; Death Guard; World Eaters; Night Lords
IG - Vestfalian Expeditionary
Force (Solar Auxilia - HH)
SM - Blades of Inaros (Homebrew)
DE - Kabal of Ouroboros

I think it could be done, but would need to be done well. Simply doing all metallic gold would be corny, but if you go to the effort of adding an oxidation effect, it could be very cool.

I did with my silver CSMs to get them on the table quickly and I reckon that they are OK.

I reckon that you might be able to get away with Tamiya gold spray followed by gryphonne sepia (or equivalent) wash.
Then pick your colours for accents, shoulder pads, guns, hair/skin etc. (With a bit of planning you could spray these bits black/white before assembly)
Grey/Urban basing would make the gold pop.
Hope this helps.

The thing is that silver is easier to work with. All you need to do is slap on a base of boltgun metal and a wash of badab and it looks half-decent.

Gold may work quite well when I think about it. Base coat it shining gold, give it a wash of ogryn then highlight with more gold and then a bit of chainmail. It's a quick job that will look alright.

24 karat gold never actually "tarnishes" hence why it is used so much in electronics. If you wanted to make some contrast you should consider making it look dirty. Brown washes and dirt clumps and what not. As well as providing a sense of shading.

But obviously armor wouldn't be made of straight 24 karat gold. It is much to soft to offer much protection. So maybe a chipped paint effect could be used as well.

Depending on your painting skills this may end up looking amazing or terrible.
Going with a classic metallic look may work, however, if your willing to go the extra 1,000 miles try painting them non-metallic gold.
One on the eavy metal team (joe) is amazing at this, and he wrote a tutorial on painting non metallics, ill try and dig it out for you.

My friend AgeofEgos has done one unit in gold and wanted to do an entire GK force like this. Gold has to be done right or it will look really tacky. For example the old BA SC in 2nd and 3rd Edition. Here is a link to my AgeofEgos gold marines:

PM him if you want to know how he painted these minis.
