Cheers, guys!

@ Sammoth: Uhh, off the top of my head, the heads I used on the base are:

- a standard Space Marine helmet with some added damage
- a horned skull from the plastic Warriors of Chaos
- a damaged skull from the old WFB plastic Skeletons
- a slightly smaller skull whose origins escape me right now -- I think I've probably cut it from some chaos model or other, but I cannot be sure.

On a related note, I snapped a quick picture of everything I have painted for this ETL:

For the sake of completeness, I have also included the two "bonus models" I painted beyond my vows while I had to wait for the opportunity to pick up some new Chaos Black spray: one rank and file World Eater and an icon bearer for my Traitor Guard. All of these provide a nice enough collections of shapes and sizes, that should give you a good idea of the various models' scale.

I like the standard bearer. The only khornate way to paint a banner is with blood!

Amazing work. I think leaving those armour panels off makes it look a lot better. I think when they inevitably fall off mine I'll do the same. Could be used as some sort of shield maybe...

Just caught up with this blog after not looking for a couple of weeks. Your Bloodthirster turned out amazingly! It really doesn't need any kind of conversion work, as GW really nailed it as far as being a great model. I'm sure you had as much fun painting yours as I did painting mine recently!

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/1/23, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~15000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Adeptus Custodes: ~1900 | Imperial Knights: ~2000 | Sisters of Battle: ~3500 | Leagues of Votann: ~1200 | Tyranids: ~2600 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000

Thanks a lot, guys! I am really, really happy with the Bloodthirster, which makes me extra glad that you seem to like him as well!

As for the model besing mostly unconverted, I believe I will make amends for that with my next project, because I have already thrown myself into the next conversion: With all the successful painting recently, I think I have earned the right to just convert something for a change, right?

Anyway, here's what I started with:

Huh? What's that supposed to be...?

The plot thickens...

As you will already have guessed, what we are looking at here is a conversion of Angron in his ascended Daemon Primarch form. I have wanted to do this conversion for quite a while no, especially since I received a second Bloodthirster a while ago and immediately set it aside for this, and I think it's finally time to go for it

To give credit where credit is due, I have to mention my two main sources for this project: One is the artwork of Daemon Primarch Angron by Alex Boyd:

While the art does provide quite a lot of inspiration, the painting style is also loose enough that several details end up looking fairly ambiguous -- which is excellent, because it allows for slightly different interpretations!

The other source I have been drawing lots of inspiration from is Reg's absolutely amazing Bloodthirster-based Angron. The conversion is so awesome that I cannot possibly hope to match it, but then the guy does already have about a dozen Angron conversions under his belt, while I am still learning At the same time, I also want to diverge from his model in a few areas, trying to put my own spin on things.

So here's what the model looks like now:

There's still quite a bit of detail and cleanup work left to be done, but the photos show you the amount and placement of armour I am planning for the model, as well as how it all goes together when the wings are in place.

As always, let me know what you think!

Haha, that made me laugh!

"'Tis but a flesh wound!"

I have completed another round of detail work on Angron, so strap yourselves in for a bit of a picture extravaganza

Nothing new and exciting to see so far, although the left hand and axe have finally been glued to the rest of the model, and I have also added another small cable or two to the head.

Now here's where it gets a little more interesting:

As you can see, I have added some skulls and chains towards the back of Angron's mane. It's a fairly subtle effect, but one that should provide a bit od contrast on the painted model. I have also wedged some pieces of chain in between all the cables and fleshy tendrils on his head.

Here's a look at Angron's back:

With the ornate crest and cable mane taking up the upper part of the back, I wasn't able to use the bit of hair that normally goes there on the stock Bloodthirster, and besides, a crest of hair like that didn't really suit Angron anyway. So I thought I'd incorporate a bit of an in-joke: My other plastic Angron conversion was based on the Slaughterpriest and had that gross, exposed spine, so I thought it would be cool to duplicate that effect on the Daemon version as well, although it still needs to be blended in a bit better.

One thing that I really like is the depth to the head and neck, with layers and layers of cabling visible:

It's really rather gross, but also pretty appropriate, wouldn't you agree?

And finally, the poor Ultramarine is also finished now:

I have given him a broken sword (the other half will be added to the base) and added some shards of his left shoulder pad where Angron's fist grips his arm.

As for the gore factor, while I don't want this part to be too cartoony or graphic, I've added the tip of a spine and one coiled rope of intestine hanging from his belly:

Most of the rest will be achieved by painting, although I am not ruling out an UHU string or two

"It didn't say anything about stuff like this in the Codex Astartes!"

As always, let me know what you think!

It looks great! Are you planning on having the rest of the Marine on the base? Perhaps crushed under Angron's hooves? It would help to alleviate the twinkle tippy toes issues I have always had with that sculpt.

That's one good looking fella (the Ultramarine ofc, not the giant twisted winged daemon monstrosity ) Really nice conversion work though, that's another lovely Angron you got there. I especially like the visual coherence between this one and the unarmored Angron the twisted spine gives. And I pitty that poor loyalist soul (why do we Ultras always have to take the beating though ) One small question though: where are the shoulder pads from?

Cheers for the comments, guys!

@ Gordon Shumway: Indeed, the Marine's lower half - or some of it, at least, will be a part of the base. I am actually thinking about adding some more fallen Astartes to the base, to show how a Daemon Primarch is quite a handful, even for a squad of the Emperor's Finest

@ Legio Ultra: Regarding the Marine, it was a toss-up between using Ultramarines and Grey Knights. The smurfs won in the end, because the model will arguably work both in the 30k and 40k timelines that way. I also made sure the fallen Marine resembled Cato Sicarius a bit, just for fun

The shoulder pads are shields -- from PuppetsWar, I believe, although I am not 100% sure , as they were sent to me as part of a larger bitz drop by a fellow hobbyist.

Thanks for the kind words, guys!

There will be more work on the Daemon Primarch conversion before long, but for now, I had one final vow for the ETL to get out of the way:

Now I didn’t harbour any ambitions to contribute a huge amount of points to the ETL, as there are some other people who have that particular corner covered much better than I ever could. But somehow I did want to read the 1,000 points mark — and as it happens, I realised that I had one last model on my unpainted pile that perfectly fit the bill:

Some of you may remember my first “Thamier-pattern” Obliterator, based on some excellent, custom parts provided courtesy of my fellow hobbyist Thamier (hence the name). Those parts allowed me to finally come up with an excellent Obliterator design that fit my army as well as the outline of what an Obliterator should look like. Back when Thamier sent me those bitz, he was awesome enough to include enough parts for two Obliterators. But I only ever managed to finish one of them and just couldn’t seem to settle on a final configuration for the second one.

For some reason, however, this changed after finishing my Bloodthirster recently — something must have been shaken loose in the back of my head, and suddenly I knew exactly how to build this guy, easy as that. A short while later, I had the finished conversion in my hands:

And as luck would have it, a single Obliterator can count as a squad and is worth exactly 70 points — just the amount I was still missing! So I decided to finish my contribution in this event by making a fourth and (final) vow. I was really looking forward to finally owning two finished Obliterators of this size and design!

Besides, it was just a single model, right? So what could possibly go wrong?

Unfortunately, the last couple of days have been the hottest days of the year so far in northwestern Germany, with temperatures of more than 30 degrees Celsius outside. Hardly the perfect weather to be painting miniatures — quite the opposite, actually!

However, I realised that losing momentum was the biggest danger for me, so I soldiered through the paintjob. And I managed to finish the Obliterator yesterday. Take a look:

And here’s a closer look at the weapon arms, spliced together from many, many different bits and kits:

Now it has been pointed out to me by Thousand Eyes and Augustus b’Raass that the armour trim needs some cleanup work here and there — particularly on the leg greaves! And I happily agree — painting this guy in the sweltering heat – and in a slightly darkened room, no less – certainly didn’t do the exactness of my paintjob any favours. But I think those problems should be easy enough to solve with some minor touchups when it’s a bit colder, and I am still reasonably happy with this guy: Now I have two massive juggernauts that can lay down quite a bit of fire between them. YAY!

And with the points of all the models I have managed to finish not at exactly 1,000 points, I think this is also the perfect moment to consider my contribution to this year’s ETL concluded: I’ve already done three vows more than I had originally planned, and while it has been a blast, I think it’s important to end things on a high note. I also don’t want to fail again, like last year!

But even so, I couldn’t be any happier with my performance: Granted, 1,000 points isn’t all that much when compared to the amounts of stuff some of the crazier contributors have come up with, but then I think I have really managed to complete some rather cool models — some of this stuff is arguably my finest work to date:

Another thing that pleases me immensely is that each model is one I have wanted to get painted for quite a while. And I even managed to paint two extra models during the event, bringing the overall number of finished models to...eight. How auspicious! I hope Khorne is pleased:

As always, let me know what you think!

Nice work on the Obliterator, although as a Blood Angel in the ETL I can't condone such speedy painting and single handedly accounting for 1k of points

Seriously though, nice work.
