Seeing as how GW has a tendency to bring us a new edition of the game ever 6-7 years or so, and I think this current edition has been out for a bits now, what do you all expect/wish will change with the next version?

I jumped into WFB this edition, but I recall the discussions people had with regard to the change of frontage required for rank bonuses and all. Not sure what they would really change for 8th Ed.

1. Go back to 4 man ranks: Many of the kits are in 4 ranks still.

Ranks require 100mm minimum instead of 5-wide? Still five-wide for 20mm units, but now 25mm bases can get it in 4 (which matches some of the boxes on sale) and Ogres can get them in three. A less complex "only four needed" would still be sufficient, though I think a 100mm+ frontage would work better.

Lore of Nature is actually useful again (3D6 S4 hits on a unit in woods, 2D6 S5 on stone, etc). I don't use the main lores much, but Nature is almost always put on the side compared to other options.

Throwing Weapons (unless specified in the unit's entry) become either attacks for number of shots (of which I could understand a multi-shoot penalty), or similar to War of the Ring's "One half the model's attacks rounded up".

Great Weapons are +2 Strength in combat on Cavalry again.

Those are all things I wish. What do I expect? Maybe a Lore of Nature buff, but most likely just changes such as Skirmishers regaining marching within 8", the phasing out of weapons such as Pikes and Slings, either a more or less forgiving miscast table, etc.

For 8th edition?

I'd suggest:
- 120mm minimum rank width (6x 20mm, 5x 25mm, 4x 40mm).
- *ALL* models in contacted ranks fight, not just those in BtB
- Revised army structure to discourage Herohammer / Monsterhammer (2k pts = 1-3 Chars, max 1 Lord, 0-3 Special, 0-1 Rare)
- Add "Casting Fault" on a 1 - spell goes off, but something bad happens to the Caster

But then, we're approaching Ancients vs Fantasy...

Rework the magic phase entirely. Something WotRish would be good but don't make it into shooting phase lite like with 40k psychic stuff. Right now it's way too easy to either shut down entirely or just go crazy and dominate the game. It should be something that can affect any game regardless of how many wizards you bring or dispel scrolls the opponent has but not so much that you can just wipe off a unit with Spirit of the Forge.

Mounts no longer gain psychology effects of their riders. Seriously I have no idea what they were thinking there.

Field allowances to stop spamming of hydras or whatever. (i.e 0-2 rares, one of which can be a hydra)

Remove the ASF and chargers go first rules. Give weapons and stuff like charging +/- modifiers to initiative then always go in initiative order. I.e Lance would be +5 initiative combined with a charge, spears gain a bonus if being charged (spears on units like Saurus would be more expensive). Stuff that deserves to be asf would be going first most of the time but you wouldn't have stupid situations like high elf archers fighting before charging witch elves.

Split flying into "soaring" and "flying." Fliers go 10" and soaring models go 20." Structure army books so models that soar are rarer and we don't get into situations like the demon book with 4 flying chariots, furies and screamers all going 20" and ignoring enemy models which march blocking.

Make bows useful somehow.

Make a "monster" rule and when something is a monster it has the "monster" rule. The current way of base size indicating if something is a monster is beyond stupid, especially when they do a faq stuff to say they aren't monsters because they are characters or whatever.

Make fear less powerful (no outnumber autobreaking), remove "Immune to Psychology/fear" from 50-75% of the the models/magic banners that have it.

Remove hatred (specifically "Hatred of Everything") from most of the stuff that has it. Armywide hatred on Dark Elves was dumb and it makes stuff like Dwarf hatred of Greenskins that actually has some basis in the game world much less interesting.

Er, 120mm is x3 for 40mm models. Still helpful for Ogres and doesn't bother me much (all my rank-and-file units of 20mm that I intend to get ranks for are at least 6-models wide), but seems to be a bit harsh on those who have units of 20 Strong 20mm models.

I want to see a mechanic that causes = powered units, (or very close to = powered units) to have a tendency to grind far longer than they normally do when 1 on 1 and front on charged.

I want to see Skirmishers get their movement back... getting movement cut in half is ridiculous. If they are too powerful with an M of 6, then CUT THE MOVEMENT DOWN, don't change the whole damn rule.

Unridden flying monsters should not be capable of rank breaking.

Terror should have a bigger impact that is almost universal. Fear should have less of an impact, that is also, almost universal.

I have no idea what to do with the magic phase, but this dice based phase is not cutting it. I don't like the 40k line either, but I think that each army should have access to their own magical lores, and what I would love to see is a different pagic "offense" but a universal magic "Defense"
