In about 2-3 weeks I'm thinking of starting up my next 40k army, and really looking into all the different MEQ chapters. Most likely would start off vanilla marines and wait and see what SW's new dex is like and go from there. My question is, is the Space Marine Strike force a good place to start? Looks to give a good range of models, but since I know almost nothing about space marines (only been playing for 2 months, and played my first game against vanilla marines today) and figured I'd ask you more seasoned collectors where to start. Thanks.

I was just looking at the Strike Force earlier tonight. It is unbalanced in that it has a full 3 Heavy Support, but only the minimum troops with no fast elements. You should figure out what you are going to do with the army first, start looking at what will save you the most on the models. The Assault on Black Reach is the cheapest way to get stuff you are going to need, but it doesn't have any options.

Yeah I can get the AOBR stuff pretty cheap, since I also play orks, plus know lot of people who bought the set, and just have it laying around (another reason interested in it)

I already know I would play a mech list (as I play a mech ork list and love it), which was one reason I was drawn to it, it does let you try out three different heavy slots to see which ones you like the most.

i would strongly advice you not to play two similar armies (ie two mech armies), you need different armies so when you get bored of playing one you can play another for a change.

with two mech armies you will get very bored very fast.

Good point. But I would assume that mech marines and mech orks are different, granted similar in that they both carry troops around and try to position to get assaults/shots off.

The mech style I was looking to play was a more of focused on the vehicle weaponry type (redeemders/predators/whirlwind) whereas my mech orks are just a bunch of boyz thrown in bare bones battlewagons/trukks (with RPJ and rams).

I was thinking of going guard, since they have a MUCH larger vehicle selection, but everyone and their mother is starting guard around my parts, and surprisingly, there's very few marines.

Would running a marine list with foot slogging stern guard and tac squads be any good?

AoBR + Strike Force seems alright. It'll net you an entire army at once!

And if you later want to add some FA, just add them, you'll have the room!

It might not be sold anymore but google the armoured strike force.

Its the same as the normal strike force but it also had some atack bikes, terminator assault squad and marine bikes plus a few more units.

As to the strike force itself its a good mix, you can then pad it out with whatever else you require.

money saving examples include:

buing a battleforce for your third troop choice and another rhino for transporting them, some scouts if you want to try them and a 5 man squad which can be sternguard... or if you want to turn them and the 5 assault troops into no jump pack assault squad and get a free rhino.

Black reach for the extra troops, the termies and dreadnaught and another commander.

So betweenthose three you could have a load of tactical marines, elites like sternguard (if prett up some of the normal marines from battleforce) a non jump pack assault squad (or keep the jump pack marines and get another box of 5) dreadnaught, rhinos and some heavy support tanks.
