Da Dark Angelz - a Dark Angels themed Blood Axe Ork Waaagh WIP...

DA DARK ANGELZ - DA JOURNEY SO FAR...
"Wotz dis den?" Morgrim eyed the thick manuscript Skarag was attempting to hand him suspiciously. "Da report ov da Dark Angelz, az you requested sar!" Skarag replied, attempting to hand off the report again. "How many pages iz dat ting?" Morgrim demanded. "50 pages sar!" Morgrim was not interested in reading 2 pages, let alone 50. "Look 'ere now Skarag. I want a 'executive summry' - got it? Uvverwise, dere will be a 'summry execution' - got it?" "Yes sar!"

Introduction
After getting the 40K itch once again (why is it always just before a new edition?) I decided to build up my Ork army once again. In an effort to move it along a bit faster, and on the advice of a friend, I've joined DakkaDakka for additional motivation - which I sorely need - I still haven't finished the boyz mob I purchased last year! Advice, comments, inspiration etc is all most welcome! So far I have just been checking I can still do the basics - put the boyz together, paint them etc - and have been exploring exactly how I want the war band to come together. I'm now at the stage of working out an initial 500pt list and working towards that. Anyway - enough about me and on to the Orks!

Welcome to "Da Ork Angelz"!
Da Ork Angelz are a Blood Axe war band who have taken mimicing the Imperium to the next logical step - Space Marines! More specifically - Dark Angels (I used to play Dark Angels as a secondary army before...) While my original thoughts were around utilizing Space Marine "taktiks" - I think it also works as Blood Axe sneakiness, trying to hoodwink Imperial forces (did that Space Marine look a bit green to you?). Anyway, I think the possibilities are quite novel:

  • Da Deffwingz - mega armoured ork nobz in bone white armour - I have a model on the way to fully test this out. All nobz are part of Da Deffwingz - even without mega armour - which will be denoted by bone white shirts and cloth pieces. I am also looking forward to bone white trukks, battle wagons and deff dreads!

  • Da Rav'nwingz - war bikes, deff koptas, war buggies etc in black armour - I'm putting a bike together at the moment to test this out.

  • 3rd - 9th "companies" - the rest of the boyz in dark angels green.

  • Grotz - 10th "company" - painted like Dark Angels scouts (test model on its way...)

  • I was initially worried that the green on green might not look any good - but I think it has worked out well so far. As I have progressed, I have added "mob" markings (tattoos) denoting Blood Axes, designation (Taktical, Assault or Big Gunz) and more recently "company" markings as well.

I'll post some more pictures up soon - I need to take them in better light - so the above image will have to do for the time being. The centre Warlord and the Nob behind him to his right were painted by my friend endtransmission. The rest are various boyz by me. At the moment my boyz are perhaps just a little too clean cut and almost comical - I will be looking to put more rough edges on the ones going forward...

    Enjoy!
    Adrian

    Hah!

I had a squad of Marine-mimicking Orks who had fought on Armageddon and had since become "Black Templorks" - so I'm looking forward to you taking this further!

    Good luck with your endeavours.

Great minds think a like my Deathskull warboss Da Verminator leads his Meganob bodyguard Da Verminators into battle. They also have a looted DA dreadnaught! This is as my main opponents at my gaming group both play Dark Angels......

So I started to get back into my orks via the standard boyz mob - to test that I could still remember how to paint orks, and trial the Dark Angels colour scheme. This was my first shoota boy, finished some time last year - my first completed ork in about 10 years I'd imagine. I think my concern about the green on green was proved null and void. At this point I was also playing around with how to do the equivalent of the Space Marine "taktikal" marking and squad number. Here you can see it plastered across his back - a roman numerals 5 over a splash of red paint. I have realised since then that not all ork backs are created equal - and have since moved on to shoulder tattoos...

In hindsight, my orks are a bit on the clean side - even for Blood Axes mimicing Dark Angels - and the light green skin makes them appear a bit comical. This was further highlights by a Warlord and Nobz my friend endtransmission did for me - so I am aiming to find a happy medium between the two...

Agreed, the green on green is fine here because Dark Angels green is so dark it's practically a green-tinted black. Love the squad marker on there, and it's properly orky for no two markings to be alike or in the same place. In fact, I hereby cast my vote for some of the 'V's to be upside down.

My second shoota boy - completed at the same time as the one above, with the same 5th "taktikal" marking. I should also note, for my first 10 I haven't done anything custom at all - they are just straight from the boyz mob box. Partly because I'd only bought the minimum of tools and mostly as, starting from scratch, I didn't have a bitz box yet (but I am now well on my way!)

Agreed - and that is the main reason why I don't sweat trialling different combinations. Its not like any of them will look out of place being orks! More variations to come as I post my backlog...

Third shoota boy - this time from the 6th "taktikal" mob. This was part of the crossover point from mob markings on the back to tattoos on the shoulders. The left shoulder sports the Blood Axes tribe icon in white (crossed axes) while the right uses a red bone for the "taktikal" designation (with a white roman numeral 6 for the mob number). I have done a few more "taktikal" boyz with the red bone (as you will see in the future) - but in hindsight I don't really like it. I'm planning to move to the ork "troops" icon instead - a straight ork mouth with two tusks. Any other ideas are most welcome!

Slugga boy from the 3rd assault mob. I think this is a great, dynamic pose for no mods. This is a good example why I moved to tattoos for mob markings - the back plate is really too small to support it. This is also a good example of why my orks are too clean - he must have stolen those axes from the factory floor and is yet to christen them!

The assault tattoo marking differs from the taktikal one - its the same Blood Axes tribe icon, except in red. Unfortunately the roman numeral 3 mob marking somewhat obscures it. I am saving the lightning bolt icon for Da Rav'nwingz, but I am open to other suggestions.

Oh - and it looks like I didn't realise that this ork head is missing an eye when I painted it... nevermind...

Slugga boy from the 3rd assault mob and my first attempt at dual wielding sluggas. This is last of my orks to sport mob markings both on their backs and as tattoos (tattoos only from now on - well, until I change my mind...)

    Automatically Appended Next Post:

'Ard boy of da 5th Kompany, 2nd Assault mob. Gone are the back mob markings - there is no where to put them anyway! In are my first attempt at Kompany markings, shown here on the left boot (see insert). My best duel wielding sluggas so far too...

    Automatically Appended Next Post:

'Ard boy of da 5th Kompany, 2nd Assault mob. The left boot was a bit difficult to get to for the Kompany marking, so in true orky fashion I've just put it somewhere else convenient - in this case the back plate. Also, for both 'ard boyz I've had to do partial tattoos as their shoulder armour obscures the top part of their shoulders.

    Automatically Appended Next Post:

Rokkit Launcha boy of da 5th Kompany, 5th Taktikal mob. I probably should have designated this a Tankbusta (with the dakka / explosion icon) rather than a Taktikal boy - what with the precariously balanced tankbusta bomb...

Here is the Warboss of Da Ork Angelz, though I can't take any credit - well except for the base. The Warboss and a retinue of Nobz was a birthday gift from endtransmission. These models are a lot grittier than mine - I think I will be working towards a middle ground with my next models, though my last two from the boyz box are too far along to change that much now.

I didn't know I was getting these - so I was mightily impressed at how well he pulled off the theme I was going for. It looks like I will need to get the Nobz box set and the Dark Angels Chapter Upgrade box set to continue in as fine a form.

    Automatically Appended Next Post:

And here is one of the four Nobz, and the end of the "completed" Da Ork Angelz. I have three more of the Nobz endtransmission gave me to base and varnish. A boy with big shoota and a Nob from the original boyz box near completion. I was given an Ork Battleforce as a leaving present from a previous place of employment (along with a Stormboyz conversion pack) - of which I have 6 more boyz put together (this time with minor modifications) and a bike in progress to being put together. I also have a Deff Dread, a Meganob and some grotz waiting delivery. I have to stop putting slugga boyz together as I eventually plan to get Assault on Black Reach.

That's it for today. I might get some WIP up during the week. Catchya!

I really like the paintjob on the orks, the green on green looks really good and the white tattoos pop out really well! Why not convert a space marine dredd if your making them Dark Angels Orks?

Also how the hell was the helmet on the warboss made? Isn't he on a too small base?

I can answer both those questions given that I made 'em

The warboss head is one of the standard Nob heads, with the helmet wings from the DA upgrade box.

As for the base, I just built the nobs from the plastic set, using the bases from the box with no real aim for what was going to be what... that was down to Adrian once he got them

I deliberately didn't touch the paint jobs - but I didn't even think about the base being too small, let alone replacing it with a larger one... and yes - it does look a bit small doesn't it? I guess I could attach it to a larger base and build it up into a bit of a mound - give him a bit more height in the process too (just in case you thought he didn't stand out enough already) Thoughts?

I may do - I have seen some great conversions of the AOBR dreadnought for Orks around DakkaDakka.

... also buy the DA vetrens set and make Nobs with power fists that the nicked, also I would love to see a Mek with imitated servo-harness, add some DA shoulder Pads to them also.

I'll have to look into the DA veteran power fists - though I do prefer the Orky power klaws. I had planned to do a Mek up (eventually) in red like the SM tech priest (and a Painboy in white, and a Weirdboy in blue) - but I do like the idea of rigging up an Orky "servo" harness - I will definately remember that! I had planned also on using DA shoulder pads, backpacks etc - but probably limited to one per model - maybe two for Nobz/characters - and perhaps with "convershons" - they are Orks after all, I don't want them to be too regimented... It should give me a pyschological edge against DM armies - more so than a mere smattering of SM heads, no?

I was wondering where that cloak was from - I couldn't find it on the DA upgrade - and now I know why!

Nob with power klaw from da 5th Kompany, 2nd Assault mob - work in progress. This is the last boy from my original boyz box (well, not counting the eleventh model you could make with an extra base...). This is a trial of incorporating more bone white into the Nobz similiar to DA veterans (ie members of Da Deffwingz minus Mega-armour). Once I clean up the black, this will be at the same stage as the big shoota boy I posted earlier. I think I'm going to need some more practice on the bone white. Also, the skin is darker, but I think I am going to have to bite the bullet and start mixing green paints... Not my favourite model so far, but completing him may raise him to acceptable

I was wondering where that cloak was from - I couldn't find it on the DA upgrade - and now I know why!

(Yes, I'm quoting myself!) This has given me an idea to incorporate some Chaos bitz along the way as well - I mean - SM, CSM, what's the difference? (to an Ork?)

I've been thinking about how to do Kommandoz again... originally I was going to do them in the typical DA scout paint scheme (green trouserz, white topz, black bootz), but scouts are the lowest ranked SMs and Kommandoz aren't the lowest ranked Orkz. Not that Orks would realise the difference in ranks, but they would notice the difference in 'ardness, yes? This was what led me to think to do grotz this way. But I don't want to do them both the same way. The difficulty I am having is thinking of an alternative colour scheme for either the Kommandoz or grotz... Suggestions welcome!

In a blood axes army I would have thought that the Kommandos's would have been part of the hierarchy due to the fact that the blood axes like being sneaky, even more so in this oarticular clan.

Good idea with mixing csm/sm bitz, make sure you dont over chaos them though, csm trophie racks work really well and using mauled csm's would work also ^_^
