What is the best, "All Around" artillery unit for just sitting back behind large squads and possible cover?

70% of all statistics are made up on the spot by 64% of the people that produce false statistics 54% of the time that they produce them.

"All around" meaning most versatile, that would be the Manticore followed by the Basilisk. The Griffon and Collossus are very good at what they do, which is killing light and heavy infantry. All of them prefer to sit back.

I would say the manticore...but they are all pretty specific in what they try to accomplish. The manticore and basilisk are the most versatile IMHO. I like the basilisk for the points, range, AP and ability to run squadrons. The manticore is just brutal when it works vs pretty much anything. I would say there are petty tight as to what is the best.

Manticore. Primary role is anti-vehicle, but it can do anti-infantry fairly well also.

Master of Ordenance.

Grab two CCS, two MoO's, Keep em waaay back in the backfield and field a heavy mech army. Importantly this leaves all your Heavy Support slots free for leman russes.

I agree with Razerous.

I want my HS slots to go to Demolishers first, then Russes (which are like Artillery, but tough), then actual Artillery (like Bassies, which are Indirect).

I like my Basilisks. Sure, they're better on large tables, but popping tanks and squashing Marines from the other side of the board is fun.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.

Do Medusas count? If so they are rediculously good at popping tanks.

Master of Ordnance is not that good. Cheap? sure...but unless you're facing a horde army with tons of models on the board, the MoO may not even earn his points back. The sheer amount of scattering that occurs keeps him from being useful and reliable.

Somtimes you do face horde armies and for a mere 80pts its well worth it. When your not facing horde armies, well..

Take a monolith; You simply will be able to see it on virtually any board aslong as you dont hide inside a building. A scatter roll of 2d6" comes to an average of 7" with a deduction of 4" from the MoO's BS comes to a total scatter of 3". A monolith is extremely large and from the centre to the side (closest) edge is roughly 2-2.5" off the top of my head.

This gives you a pretty decent chance to put a str9 hit on a AV14 vehicle. A favourable non-horde example of where this weapon can actually be quite useful.

Master of ordinance scatters 2d6 on a hit but he scatters 3d6 on a miss so using him against heavy armor is not exactly a high percentage shot.

Why does my eldar army run three fire prisms? Because the rules wont let me use four in (regular 40k).
