Having just been put of eldar (by a unfortunate paint stripping incident resulting in melted plastic blobs) I am looking for a new army to play. I'm looking for a well ballanced but mainly Combat based army. Elite armies are preferable as they suit my playstyle better and I would prefer a "good" army although being able to justify / theme them as good is ok.

I am considering SWs as the rules sound cool and they have fit most of my requirements. I don't like nids (i find the mindlessness boring as you cannot develop characters) or bezerkers (a bit to uncontrolable)

Any suggestions would be very helpful as i'm a bit stuck on ideas.

SWs sound good, especially with the new codex coming out. Black Templars is also a very CC oriented army. A number of Vanilla Marine builds might work for you, too.

Check out my blog for bat reps and pics of my Ultramarine Honorguard (Counts as GK) Army!

I vote vanilla marines... sure, they aren't the greatest in hand to hand, but every unit in the army can put up a decent fight in hand to hand, and assault terminators are among the best close combat fighters in the game.

and you have dreadnoughts for heavy close combat... and you can also bring enough heavy weapons to create a balanced force.

Thanks for the replies so far.

I have a small ork army but I couldn't carry on with that much painting after 60 boys I decided to choose sanity over painted orks.

At the moment I am leaning towards Blood Angels as they have the ranged power of vanilla marines but more CC based. I still need to find out whether people think they are worth using.

Vanilla marines are a possibility but I just think they are a bit over used and I want something a bit different.

Between BA and SW I would probably choose BA for a bit of variety as I havent seen any BA armies and soon there will be a lot of SW armies.

Dipping is always an option when it comes to painting horde armies. It helped me keep my sanity when I painted my 'Nids

I thought dipping was only for nids i've never seen dipped orks, can't imagine how they would look.

I will only choose BA after i've found out what they are like to play but i'm pretty sure they're what I am looking (tingles at the thought an army full of jetpack wearing assult marines).

Had to change message after a better look at the sprues I noticed it would be quite easy to avoid the bad parts (mainly heads).

And heaven forbid if the Marine would also happen to have an intimidating looking, vertical scar. Then you're surly boned. Those guys are the worst. Not a chance I'd say.

I agree but they are the main elite army and are one of the most varied.

I don't want to be one of the people just playing Sw because they are new but I think they will be the army I choose. They were the first army I ever played and I have always liked them. The new models and competative codex are just bonuses.
